Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@Mysonsdad: OK, if I tell this girl that she will be officially jealous!

He’s lucky to be his dad’s son.

@AnxietyAttack77 @Mysonsdad I am sorry today didn’t bring the news we all were hoping would come for you. Something better is waiting for your kids. It is just going to take a little more time to find it.

@Undercovermom1 congrats and here is hoping for more good news next week for all who are waiting. @2manybooks I agree. This is a hard time of year to get unhappy news. I am amazed at how resilient the kids are.

@mysonsdad sorry about the Stanford news.

@Mysonsdad it’s Stanford’s loss. I agree it’s better to be rejected than deferred.

My daughter got chocolate ice cream, pizza and a couple of episodes of friends before heading off to a violin gig. She has a very busy weekend so she won’t have a lot of time to fret. As I said this morning, it’s going to be okay.

Well, it’s official. Assuming that he doesn’t get arrested for a felony in the next six months, S16 will be a freshman at Amherst College next year. If anyone’s interested I posted a note on the Amherst Decision Thread about him.

S16 is a better student that he is an athlete, but he really wanted to continue swimming in college. A whole bunch of good/selective schools were pushed to the bottom of his list because, even though he’d have a decent shot at admission, he wasn’t fast enough to make the swim team. Last year he visited Pomona a couple of times, met with the coach, and it looked like a perfect match. But Mom and I thought that he shouldn’t make a decision like that without visiting some other schools, and on our annual pilgrimage back east he visited Bowdoin and Amherst. We thought that they would be perfunctory visits, just to confirm that Pomona would be his ED choice with coach support. He instantly fell in love with Amherst, and after he went to a ‘recruiting weekend’ in October at both schools he was even more clear that he preferred Amherst. Funny how things don’t go according to the script.
So we will now have two boys going to school across the country. At least the dog is staying put, as best we know.

As many of you know, this process went to the other extreme for us with S14, who after waiting until March for a number of rejections, wait-lists, and acceptances, didn’t make a decision until April 23rd (eight days before the deadline). So, I know what that’s like. I will definitely be sticking around here, rooting for all of your kids. Through all the anecdotes and ups and downs they have all become quite precious to me. Notably, they are blessed with parents who are totally dedicated to their well-being and success. These are the luckiest kids in the world.

@AsleepAtTheWheel congrats to your son! It’s funny, I see happy news in two ways. Great for your son and mine! Yours gets to go to a great school and mine has one less great person to compete with for Pomona, a school he loves! Win-win!

So what are the celebration plans?

@AsleepAtTheWheel Congrats to your S!

@AnxietyAttack77 @Mysonsdad I am sorry the news was not good today. As others have said, there will be good news coming.

Woo hoo! Congrats @asleepatthewheel !

Congrats @AsleepAtTheWheel! !!
That’s awesome that you guys can sit back and relax now!

@AnxietyAttack77 @Mysonsdad I am sorry to hear your kids defer and rejection. I wish your kids back and long wait. This might

@AsleepAtTheWheel Congrats!!! I visited Amherst one time and I loved the atmosphere. I had wished my DD applied there.

Congrats to everyone @Undercovermom1 @AsleepAtTheWheel ! Sorry to hear about the rejections. I’ve submitted my enrollment deposit and ordered my sweatshirt so I now I get to be a source of moral support to my friends-my best friend has two very selective EA decisions coming out in the next week including her dream school so hopefully all goes well.

@Mysonsdad, @AnxietyAttack77 The more I read, hear, learn, the more convinced I am that once a kid is in the ballpark for a school, whether or not they get in is almost pure luck. D has two friends who applied to Harvard, one got in, the other deferred. Two more who applied to Stanford, same results. In each case it could have absolutely gone the other way. Still, it’s very hard for them to believe that, and not take it personally. I’m hoping your kids weather their disappointment with a minimum of suffering.
Congrats, @AsleepAtTheWheel – we toured last summer, it’s a beautiful campus!

Lots of unexpected results over the past two days for everyone. So happy that many of your kiddos received that result that they had hoped to receive and sad that many did not. It has proven to me that this whole process is very random. D16’s good friend was deferred yesterday and denied to her first choice today. Her stats were exactly where they needed to be with great EC and demonstrated interest, exactly the kind of kid I would have thought any school would want.

My D16 received an unexpected EA result today (didn’t expect it until the end of December). She was accepted at College of Wooster. Waiting on 4 more before it is decision time.

Some days this journey is harder then expected.

congratulations to all the ones accepted, hugs and “hang in there” for those who have been denied, waitlisted, deferred or just plain old disappointed! My DS won’t hear anything till next weekend it seems. And I am holding my breath. I sure hope he is accepted…because, if I have to admit it…it is I who will dread having to hear/feel his disappointment. I think/know he will bounce back if needed. I just am trying to self-protect.

Oh no, @mysonsdad! Silly Stanford. Similar feelings for your D’s ED @AnxietyAttack77.

CONGRATS, @Undercovermom1, @AsleepAtTheWheel (love beautiful Amherst), and @labegg (yet another great choice for your D) Huzzah! Huzzah!

What a lot of news! Congrats to those who are in, and a virtual ice cream/chocolate/dinner and hugs to all who got disappointing news.

I have been glued to the results coming in the last couple days. What an exciting and emotional time. I’m so so impressed with the fantastic students represented here. The future looks bright.

Happy for you and your son @AsleepAtTheWheel !

Our good news today was a very nice scholarship to Eckerd.

Got home last night from an out-town-trip so yesterday was the first time I saw my DD since she got accepted to her dream school…

Me: “I’m so proud of you sweetheart. WashU is only 4 hours away. We’re going to come down and visit you every month.”

DD: “Every month?” (Believe me, tone was not one of elation.)

Sigh…

We just got confirmation of a 16,000 annual scholarship at the school D16 deposited at . Merry early Christmas to us!
