Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Great @sseamom Our senior superlatives are due next week and the categories aren’t that great. That’s a really admirable project

@sseamom I would love to meet your daughter! My son comes up with big and bold ideas but hasn’t yet been able to make them happen.

@happymochi I’m so sorry. There is never a good time for such a loss, even though we know inevitably it comes.

@happymochi I’m so sorry. The dog in my avatar is my S16’s 6th birthday present. She recently turned 12. I can’t imagine our family without her.

Sorry @happymochi. Dog people here too.

I am so sorry about the loss of your dog, Happymoochi. May your memories bring you comfort.

What is a senior superlative? We don’t have those in D’s school.

@happymochi - sorry for your loss!

We don’t have senior superlatives either. S just heard that he made the first cut for a scholarship - now, needs to write additional essays. He was joking that he was missing the stress from last month

@happymochi sorry about your loss. One of our dogs died several years ago and I still have her photo as my phone screen saver. Gone but not forgotten.

@arisamp congrats on your DS making the first cut for the scholarship!

There are somewhat funny categories vote for people in- best dressed, most likely to succeed, best hair, teacher’s pet, most likely to be on a Wheatie’s box, most likely to cure a disease. Those are some of ours. Then they take pictures and put them in the yearbook. @carlson2

@Sophmore1 maybe you could have a prom dress rehersal party the week before so your DD can have the fun of getting ready with her friends. I always thought that part was more fun than the actual dance.

So sorry about the loss of pets. I know how much it hurts to miss the fur-babies.

S is appealing the level of scholarship he was offered at first choice. My wife talked to someone in a admissions and got the impression it was worth the effort. Inlaws have offered to help with first choice, but we’d like to reduce the amount. Also, we get the impression that the main motivation is that FIL as preconceived notions about University Mississippi and doesn’t want S to go there. His reasoning reeks of confirmation bias, and S realizes this. I’m a little imsulted that he doesn’t think we’ve done our research. Talking to someone who attended 10 years after the school was integrated? Give me a break.

Welcome @oneundecided so glad you could join us!

@happymochi so sorry for your loss! We were in the same place two and 1/2 years ago but it feels like yesterday. After about four months we decided to get another puppy and I can truly say that I love my four legged child just as much as I love my two legged children (my two legged children tend to think I love my puppy more than them…I don’t know about that but I am comforted by the fact that my four legged child will never leave me to go off to college…LOL)

@Sophmore1 That is so awful that your D has to choose between her senior prom and her scholarship! These are two monumental events and to have to pick one over the other is pure anguish! My heart goes out to your D! Can you contact someone at the school? Maybe they let her accept remotely in this situation?

Good news here this week. Son was tipped that he is advancing a level in the Elks scholarship competition and today he got an email that he is a semi-finalist for a scholarship at his favorite match school. Looks like being chosen a semi-finalist is practically a likely letter. This is his first “admission”.

We are not expecting any other college results until March.

I’m just back from a ramble around the reddit subreddits on r/colleges/wiki/faqs. Only one of my D16’s schools was listed and it has low traffic. Oh, well.

It was interesting to read some of the more popular colleges’ subreddits. And, I ran into a subreddit for dorm/house RAs, which might really interest my D16. So, I think reddit, for me, might remain very useful for learning about the professional chatter in a certain career (an active subreddit in that field), I think I’ll stick to CC for college-talk.

BTW, yesterday I read the About Reddit, redditquitte, FAQs, and other reddit 101 stuff. Someone here had asked about reddit. These pages inside the site are very clear and welcoming. Check them out.

@mstomper: “Talking to someone who attended 10 years after the school was integrated? Give me a break.”

I don’t know how to respond to this mstomper, but I wanted you to know that it has sat deeply with me.

Guide your child according to your best instincts, and in his best interests. I hope your aid appeal is successful.

D just read an email from one of her in state safe schools and was accepted! She is hoping to get into the honors college but she will have to wait for the snail mail acceptance letter to see about that!

@happymochi Sorry about the loss of your beloved pet.

@happymochi, aw, that is so very sad :frowning:

@Dragonflygarden and @arisamp , hooray for good scholarship news!!

@mstomper, I hope you can get a bit more of scholarship for your student. I can understand the annoyance at FIL.

@lvmjac1, nice to get that safety confirmation!!

D16 is expecting a decision from one school in the morning, and then we are off on a whirlwind trip so she can do a mandatory scholarship candidate interview at another school in the eastern half of the US. We will have a longish layover on the West Coast, and are doing a school tour (school to which she has yet to be accepted) during our downtime. It all had to be arranged around ski races (which are happening tomorrow morning) and feels a bit frantic!

So sorry to hear of your loss @happymochi.

@sophmore1 I think a very special dinner night out and or a play or concert on another evening might be a nice replacement for prom.

Congrats to all with good news on scholarships and admissions.

DS has been admitted to Ginourmous state U. No word yet on any $s but he is unlikely to attend due to the size of the place anyway.
