Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@petrichor11 , I’m so happy for your D! I know you were concerned about her eventual placement. And @carolinamom2boys , how exciting! good luck to your son!

I hate waiting for the kids to open things, @carolinamom2boys ! I’m glad D was with me when I picked up the mail. I’d’ve gone crazy waiting. Kudos for your patience, and congrats to the manchild!

And thanks everyone for the congratulations! I really think Eckerd will be perfect for her. She already has plans to befriend everyone else’s furry roommates so she doesn’t have to bring her own cat and deal with litter boxes and feeding dishes. Finding out today that Elie Wiesel teaches winter term was just icing on the cake.

I signed up with USC parents FB group and just learned they have therapy dogs to play to relive stress during finals!

@Waiting2exhale @petrichor11 has twins S and D.

@Ballerina016 College of Charleston also has puppies for stress relief for finals and last year the president of the college made pancakes for the students. Miami University Oxford brings in miniature horses for pet therapy .

@sseamom, great choices for your girl!!

@petrichor11, oh, so pleased for your daughter as well!! And how lovely that they specifically mentioned the essay.

@carolinamom2boys, woohoo, step by step! Great opportunity!!

I think a lot of colleges bring in therapy dogs at finals. I know 11th Hour Pancakes with the Dean of Students is a tradition at the college I’m going to.

@Waiting2exhale, “what calls to you, calls to you”…yes, so true.

Wow, so much good news today!!! We needed a day like this and I hope we all have far more great days coming for our DC soon! Congrats to all of those with happy news (-:

Therapy dogs seems like a popular thing among many of the schools during finals week.

I remember hearing about free cookies at UCLA at an infosession back in 2009. I see that some church group is actually giving a lot of food, coffee etc at the library these days during finals.

Older D took a class at med school - learning empathy touching horses. :slight_smile:

Congrats to all with acceptances and scholarship invites! What a great way to start the weekend. =D>

DD just got email that she is a semi-finalist for one of outside competitions. They sent rejection letter first and semi finalist letter in a minute.

@Ballerina016 Congrats to your daughter.

Looks like the FA fairy came last night for many of us. Just what I hoped for!
Found out more info for DS’s interview. 10 scholarships and only 25 interviewees. Fairly decent odds. Fingers crossed for everyone.

@Ballerina016, that was quite the roller coaster with a rejection first! Was it sent mistakenly then? We had a similar situation here last week, when a college sent an e mail with a header indicating that D was NOT chosen for scholarship. The e mail was recalled though, so we could not see the body. Her actual notification was via the postal system this week.

@carolinamom2boys, good odds indeed! I was just recently complaining that I don’t care for these scholarship competitions that require travel, with the outcome being either a significant reward at very low odds, or nothing. I think I could probably live with 15/25 odds, though it would be nice if there was a lesser reward of some kind for the 10/15.

@Waiting2exhale Oh, I missed your post! Yes, S is one minute older than D. And right now, envious of her ability to have a pet on campus. (I think she’s secretly enjoying the envy.)

I agree! The GT presidential scholarship requires you be present to win for the finals round–100 people approximately 50 scholarships though I think by the time some people opt out and such everyone gets something. Many of them are also on 1 set date and some of the dates conflict so you have to make some decisions early. They should at least offer a few hundred dollars to defray travel expenses. We’ve figured out that anywhere you have to fly, rent a car, and get a hotel will cost around $1,000 for the weekend for 1 parent and the college kid–not too affordable for many especially when you have multiple irons in the fire.

@GoodGrief16 He’s already been given a substantial scholarship , this is an opportunity for a larger named scholarship with study abroad stipend and summer internship or research stipends. We have an added advantage that it’s only 40 minutes from home, definitely worth the trip.
:wink:

Congratulations to your son @carolinamom2boys and good luck with the interview!

Congratulations to your daughter @petrichor11 on her acceptance to Eckerd.

Congratulations to your daughter @ballerina16 on her semifinalist status and good luck as she continues with the competition.
