Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

We too are preparing for an on campus honors scholarship day. I don’t really know what to expect. We shall see.

Good luck everyone. It’s suddenly becoming real. He graduates 4 months from tomorrow .

For UChicago the only dining plan Freshman can purchase is $5880 for the year! It is unlimited dining hall swipes though and they will make them boxed lunches and sick day meals as needed. The only time the dining hall isn’t open is Saturday dinner. They also have a 4th meal from 9pm-12am which is nice probably healthier than ordering pizza. Upperclassman can use that plan or one that has 2 meals per day and more discretionary swipes and dollars but costs the same.

I read that UChicago has a movement to get Saturday dinners covered in the meal plan for low-income students who report they have no good options and are food-insecure.

Good luck to those of you with trips this weekend! It’s definitely getting more real-the prom date was set today, as was the location. Graduation is just over 4 months away for us, and the senior projects well under way. It seems so hard to believe when we’re not even sure where D is going next fall!

I don’t get to brag much but my daughter got into Loyola Marymount (Screenwriting major). It’s a safety school but still nice to see. She freaked out because I saw the accceptance on the portal before she did. I was shocked to see it and wasn’t expecting it. I was excited but now she says she can’t trust me.

DD got her second acceptance today to Cal Poly Pomona! Still not her first choice, but definitely above CSULB. No word about UCLA Regents, but she’s really not surprised. The next thing she’ll probably hear about is NMF, unless she hears something from UC Riverside or Irvine first.

@mom2one98 congrats to your D on Loyola Marymount! I don’t have access to most of D’s portals, although I was able to check on her CSULB status before she did since it just required information that I knew without a password. However, I didn’t let on that I knew before she checked herself. It drives me crazy that she’s not as anxious to find out where she got in as I am!

Good luck to your son @carolinamom2boys! That sounds like an intense day. I like that they are evaluating candidates so thoroughly.

@palm715, that is a little nervewracking, but I bet she does great!

@mom2one98 and @mom2jl, hooray for admissions!

The college mails and e mails have slowed here, which means we are in the home stretch of the decision making process, I suppose. I got our taxes done and the FAFSA corrected, and the IDOCs in. The IDOC thing was more time consuming than I anticipated, with a couple of longish forms to fill out.

Re: outside scholarships, my daughter was pretty obsessed with scholarship apps of all sorts for a while, but was pretty much shut out of everything! It became rather comical. She’s waiting on notification re: finalist status for a couple of schools’ scholarship programs now.

Good luck and safe travels to all! I know your kids have worked hard for these opportunities and are ready to meet the challenge of this next step. I bet if you sit back and watch, and REALLY look at them you will be in awe of the accomplished young adults they have become. Now if we could just get them to check their email… :-?

@Dragonflygarden that’s great advice, thank you
@mom2one98 @Mom2jl Congratulations
My niece also get into Cal Poly Pomona today. I am so proud of her

S has a friend who cannot get a break. During his high school years he ran for office in different organizations and lost every time. He went to Boys State and lost two elections. He got deferred from his EA school, he has been turned down for the big scholarships at USC, he was not invited to apply for the UCLA alumni scholarship and yesterday did not get an invite for Regents. He has a 4.7 gpa (all A’s) and a 2400 SAT. He has good EC’s and is a good looking guy with a good personality. I feel so bad for him.

@Mysonsdad I feel for your son’s friend. That was pretty much S’s junior year (and parts of this last semester as well). Here’s hoping the deferral turns into an acceptance in March.

took a bit of a break to socialize with people in the real world and came back to read all the happy news on admittance to the california and other schools as well as the many scholarship notifications. Congrats to all. It is really nice to see the hard work being rewarded. To those packing to go for their interview weekends for big scholarships good luck and safe travels!

Wow, @Mysonsdad. It’s not even good enough to be perfect! I’m sure the future holds so much for this young man. These events will hopefully shape him in a positive way.

@palm715 Good luck! S16 hasn’t been on a plane on his own yet. I know I will be nervous when the time comes. Your D sounds so independent. She’ll do great!

Congrats on all acceptances and scholarships. Hope all the sick kids and parents are doing better.

@carolinamom2boys sounds like a fun and stressful weekend. Good luck to your son.

@palm715 Good Luck and safe travels! My daughter travels by herself (1st time) in March.

@mysonsdad I would bet he has good things coming his way.

Does anyone know if certain schools your child has applied to request more financial info via the CSS, does it mean they’ve been accepted and just not notified yet and are building your package?

@sleepyparent I have no idea but it makes me think that reverse likely letters might be nice in some cases. If my son’s Cornell app is already in the reject pile, we would SO like to know now. I hope in your case it means good news! I just got something from the college board to complete the IDOC form. Just when I thought I was done with them…

Hi all - does anyone have experience with IDOC? 4 of the schools DD has applied to want this completed, due date of 3/1, & we will not know if she has gotten in before providing all of this! UGH!!! Crazy amount of work…

@CAMidwestMom I feel the same way. Wondering if for some schools it is automated for all applicants and we are just jumping through hoops(which at this point is fine) or it means something more positive. Good luck to your son!!!

@CAMidwestMom and @Kat2013 So, we also received a letter re: IDOC but when we logged in it stated that 2 schools wanted 2015 tax returns before 3/1. I didn’t see anything regarding an additional form that needed to be filled out

Good luck to all the travelers/scholarship applicants and congrats to those with positive admittance news! In some ways, I think February is going to drag on for our household very slowly. Aside from a possible scholarship notification late in the month, not much is happening on the college front. D’s mail has definitely trickled down. We’re just in a holding pattern until March/April and then (fingers crossed) we’ll be scrambling to make plans for admitted students days.
