Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@Waiting2exhale we just went thru this with my daughter. She NEVER wore panty hose. This trip she is on they told her she HAD to wear them with all business wear and formal wear. She wasnt a happy girl. :))

@mysonsday congratulations!! I know it is a great feeling to be finished with this process.

Congratulations to all of those with positive Ivy Day results, and big hugs to those who didn’t fare as well!

@Mysonsdad, big congrats on your son’s decision to go to UCLA! It really is a wonderful school. DH and I met there as grad students, and D has talked about going there for many years. It is definitely a top three finalist for her, but she’s having a hard time deciding between big public university and small private LAC. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up there though! And, of course we’d be happy to have another Bruin in the family.

@LKnomad, I’ve never visited Whitman, since both of my kids wanted to stay in CA for college, but I hear it’s beautiful! I have two friends whose kids are there and they are both very, very happy! I really hope your son likes it.

Are we at the end of announcements? Any schools yet to release decisions? We all need to get aboard the SS Indecision. Congratulations to @mysonsdad for getting off when the rest of us are getting on.

Ivy Day brought a few more acceptances, so he needs to think through his options and we need to formulate a plan about which schools to visit.

First post here, so hi everyone! My D is still waiting on her final response from Reed, which will mail decisions tomorrow. This is super nerve-racking for me, but I’m posting here and trying to keep mostly calm at home.

D only applied to 4 schools: Reed, Evergreen State, Earlham, and Middlebury. She knew what she wanted and didn’t see the need to apply to other schools (Evergreen does rolling admissions and is not selective, so she was in there before applications were due elsewhere). So far, she has two acceptances (Evergreen State, Earlham) and one rejection (Middlebury- but that was a big reach for her). Evergreen is her favorite so far, in fact she’s at an accepted students’ dinner right now. But, I think she might secretly prefer Reed, but doesn’t want to really let on until she hears from them. Or maybe that’s my imagination- I’m a Reed grad myself.

On paper, I think it’s a slight reach for her, but she’s definitely in range, and I think she has a lot of strengths outside of grades/test scores that will work in her favor. I definitely felt that I could see her there with the kids as she walked around campus, and it sounds like she got into a fairly in-depth conversation with her interviewer. More than that, though, with such a small number of schools that she’s applied to, I’d really like to see her get another ā€œyesā€ even if she decides not to go there. She’s also waiting for a NSLI-Y response for a summer program to Russia, but judging from the threads around here, if she hasn’t heard yet, that probably isn’t good news.

The good news is, we live in Oregon, so I’m hoping the mail will bring her answer, one way or another, to her by Saturday morning.

@waitingtoexhale my girls have not worn anything other than tights when they were little and now because it’s fashionable with some clothing. No pantyhose. I never wear them anymore either. It’s a shame they aren’t in vogue anymore as they really helped flatten things.

@Zelanie welcome! Can’t wait to hear if Reed is part of the final choices. I’m fairly new here too and it’s a great group of people with fantastic kids.

No pantyhose…they spray tan for color instead. My mom is always appalled that my girls do not were panty hose or a slip. Her reasoning ā€œIt smoothes everything outā€

@Zelanie: It is nice to be wanted, yes. Welcome.

Sounds like she is of a mind to stay near, and as she is your DD you’re probably onto something with thinking she may be secretly waiting on a ā€˜Yes,’ from Reed. Here’s to hoping she finds the right place for her.

There was a dad here, who may come back now that all things are done, can’t remember his name right now, but his daughter was going to do, or vying for, a NSLI-Y program as well. I think as of last posting things had been looking up as far as that program, but it was so very long ago that you may be right about the time for decisions being behind you.

@livinginLA:
I guess I don’t understand how one wears a shapely, well-made dress (especially one which comes just above the knees) and heels with bare legs and bare feet. Seems like the look is not complete or something. Guess I need to get out more.

@Waiting2exhale no hose, but many girls to wear spanx to smooth the tummy and booty. :wink:

Spanx…a refashioned girdle. The woman who came up with that was brilliant.

They’re all so young - what tummy?!
So it’s a wear-nothing-underneath, show no lines, smoothing undergarment meant for taut-bodied young women, I take it.

Fabulous, just give me another piece of cheesecake, please.

@4kids2graduate Wait, what? My H and I met at Rsley at Cornell! Not many dorms get a shout out on CC. I agree, would have been a good place for @frenchtoastlover.

The only time my almost 21 year old D wears panty hose is for auditions but otherwise never no matter how cold. Tights or leggings yes but no pantyhose. Also I don’t know where folks live but around here there are plenty of young girls who could do with some smoothing. Teens seem overall heavier to me today than when i grew up (except for those who are naturally very tiny / slim).

More congrats to those who got good news since I was last on this forum, and a heap of your choice of comfort food for those who did not get the news they were waiting to hear. And a dose of extra patience for those STILL waiting on Reed!

@Waiting2exhale my D’s school requires the kids to ā€œdress for successā€ on Thursdays and for the quarterly exhibitions (tonight was our last one for the seniors). There is almost never pantyhose on any of the girls. BUT when D goes to Fisk she will need some because they are REQUIRED for convocations and other special events, as are white dresses and black pumps. D hates wearing them, but for this, she’ll put up with it.

**I couldn’t resist checking in today!

Welcome, Zelanie!

@psychmomma, I hope you will post your list for Dorm Mountain. It sounds spectacular.

Hugs to @petrichor11 (or possibly congrats for following fewer CC threads); @arisamp, our noble founder; @booajo; @palm715 (congrats on the clarity of your own decision, however); @Mysonsdad (but being a Bruin is bodacious); hugs to others who haven’t posted yet.

Congrats, @frenchtoastlover! I repeat myself: however will you choose?

Congrats, @ReminiscingDad on Penn Engineering. So cool!

Congrats, @CAMidwestMom, on the Cornell option. Intriguing and what a great opportunity to have many experiences.

Congrats, @Ballerina016, on two more terrific choices: Columbia and Cornell!

Congrats, @fretfulmother. Now you have to make the right choice! :slight_smile:

@Waiting2exhale, congrats on the yes.

@piesquared, congrats on the acceptances.

**Back to the coal mines. If only I didn’t have to wear panty hose in the coal mines.

@crowlady Wow to you too…you met your spouse there! that is so wonderful!

D14 is a sophomore and in her second year living at Risley Hall…such a quirky and fun place for her to hang her hat! She could not see herself anywhere else after her freshman year, so she chose to live there a second year! She wanted so badly for her brother (my S16) to apply there…because she loves it and really thought he would as well. He had different plans though…and although they worked out well for him (just wish he would decide already!), she still secretly wishes he would have applied…

We visited halloween weekend her freshman year (parent’s weekend)…and we suspected the wide variety of people we met/costumes we saw, etc…was very much the norm!

@waiting2exhale, it’s funny, I used to be aghast that she would wear no pantyhose even to the winter semiformal.

But now she wears pantyhose/tights with dresses sometimes, so go figure.

@sseamom Congrats on your last Seniors exhibition. Isn’t it funny what kids will do to attend a school that is their first choice? I actually knew how high a school ranked on my son’s list when he ate salad and wore a Oxford cloth shirt with a tie . I guess you’ll have to add pantyhose to your school supplies

@Waiting2exhale - I wear tights almost every time I wear skirts, pantyhose very very occasionally, and bare legs only under maxi-dresses with sandals. I am a reasonable weight (to me), but don’t love how my plain skin looks (which is probably an emotional thing to work on, as opposed to a fashion thing to work on LOL). A lot of young women do not wear pantyhose, or only wear those super-sheer ones in their own skin colors - and apparently it is not a trivial thing to match most skin colors with these. My sister has only one brand she can reliably get (she’s an attorney and wears hose almost daily).

I attempted to wear one of those smoother things (not Spanx but an off-brand) and found it suffocating and uncomfortable, if not downright offensive to my gender.
ETA: Anyone will be ā€œwaiting to exhaleā€ for a very long time if they wear some. :slight_smile:

@EastGrad - hee hee! My father is encouraging DS to do ā€œVisitasā€ but so far I’m not sure your alma mater is in the lead. We still need to hear about the money; DS got an email this morning to log into a different portal that @kittymom1102 had referred to, but apparently it didn’t work. And ok, I will admit that I find the word ā€œVisitasā€ … a teensy bit pretentious. Maybe I haven’t given up all my childhood resentment quite yet.

In great admissions news, a student of mine got into Yale and will be attending - she is absolutely a sweetheart and very smart, and interestingly I taught her in non-Honors science classes. She’s a special kid who always thinks deeply about important issues, has exceptional talent in humanities, and does things like using her AP-level language skills in a zillion languages to interpret for the new ELL kid who has arrived. I was kind of sad she didn’t ask me for a LOR (though I wrote 27 so it’s not like I was THAT sad), but am still following her progress! Two other girls I did write for, came by to visit me yesterday and they are very excited to go to USC and MSU respectively. I am so happy for ā€œmy kidsā€ finding their places!

Welcome @Zelanie !!

Congratulations Everyone!!!

SS Indecision is still in muddy waters here.

Harvard seems to have left Ivy league but you got the rest here.
