Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Folks are getting swag packages from schools? All we’ve gotten from UF is an e-mail telling us to get ready to cough up that $225 housing deposit…

We’re doing this whole college thing wrong… :-?

@Gator88NE —I am with you in the ‘doing this whole college thing wrong…’ Second child, still no swag.

Pretty much swagless here. We’ve received one teeny tiny pennant (still in folder) and one tee shirt. Which had to actually be ordered to size so all we “really” got was an order form.

Only one piece of swag here. 8 college accepts and one two sided puzzle from Miami of Ohio.

Three acceptances, and only a couple of stickers to show for it. :frowning:

Not much swag here either, a couple of stickers.

Congratulations to all, I’m amazed by the opportunities your kids have ahead of them!!! I don’t want to miss anyone, but I cheered with every acceptance and scholarship award!

Got a letter (addressed to the parental units, and clearly a generic letter that was sent out widely) from Macalester today that went on a bit (two full pages, single-spaced) about how wonderful it is that our child has applied to Macalester, and how Macalester provides a great education, and—here’s the money line—that we should make sure that our college decision shouldn’t come down purely to cost, but rather to value.

Two thoughts:

[ol][]No, cost is a big deal, and to be honest for many of us a bigger deal than value—cashflow is a real thing.
[
]Is this Macalester’s way of telling us that they’re going to be extra-stingy with the merit (and maybe need-based) aid this year?[/ol]

My D17 got a cute sleep mask from Barnard — since it’s in the city that never sleeps, all the girls need sleep masks!!

Grrr. I paid for three AP tests today. Already???

Today D17 got an email from a D3 coach at a prestigious LAC that basically said “I’m pleased to see your application to XXXX, I’d love to have you walk on to the team if you are accepted and you choose to enroll. Please contact me if you have any questions” It was a school that I thought was pretty snooty and highly athletic, D did not approach the coach or fill out any athletic interest forms there. I thought the email was very friendly but weird (timing.)

D answered the note and said she would be sure to try out for the team if she enrolled.

Any opinions?

@HiToWaMom – I suppose it would have been too much to include ear plugs! The noise never bothered 20-somethign me all the years I lived in Manhattan, but I don’t think I would sleep as soundly these days. Fun swag though!

@cleoforshort – I have NO experience on the topic, but my guess is that it is a positive sign b/c Admissions took the trouble to speak with the coach about your D. The little bit I do know is that the NESCAC coaches each get two pulls for admission each year (except football which gets 14, I think). Some of these NESCACs have more than a third of the student body participating in Varsity athletics so there have to be a lot of walk-ons. Best of luck to her!

All you people with your continuing exciting news and swag reports are making me almost feel bad that my D got into her ED school. We had the one exciting day back in December and now it’s business as usual around here.

But honestly, I’m so happy for all of you who have been getting great acceptances and scholarships!

@CT1417 Thanks for your reply! I don’t think there will be a pull in this case - the coach doesn’t have any of D’s athletic stats, I wonder if she is also a reader and saw that D participated in the sport she coaches.

More fun with mail from colleges!

My daughter went through her last few days’ worth of college emails tonight, and got one from Colgate (where she’s applied), titled “A Valentine”. It begins, inauspiciously enough, with

and then goes on to say that they’re reading through applications, and says that if she’d like, she can change her application status to early decision anytime up to 1 March.

Really. But what in the world advantage would it be to go ED at that point? Demonstrated interest, sure, but Colgate claims to not consider that in their IPEDS report—so it would just seem to be a pointless way to limit your options to one school late in the game.

Anybody care to enlighten me?

Sleep mask? That’s adorable @HiToWaMom I feel your pain, I paid for 3 as well.

Not one sticker here. Ever.

@crazym0m Congrats!!

Today’s news: D has moved on to the final step to become a Stamps Scholar at Ole Miss - interview with the Stamps Foundation!

Swag - D has gotten a bit in the mail (stickers, bags, luggage tag, pennant, etc), but lots more on visits/interviews. She has so many t-shirts that she has been wearing mostly college t-shirts to school this year. She also has way too many portable chargers now.

Great news on the finalist status at Ole Miss and Richmond, respectively @itsgettingreal17 and @crazym0m !

@dfbdfb Wow! That’s a tun-off. What kind of admissions game are they playing?

We also got the very long letter from Macalester. My husband said, “Well, this doesn’t really say anything at all!”

In addition, my D17 got accepted to Grinnell yesterday too–with a $25K scholarship. It’s the only one of the 12 schools she applied to that we haven’t visited. She’s 3 for 3 now, and still waiting on 9 more …
