Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Just paid–D17 is taking tests for 2 of the 3 AP classes she’s taking. Struggling with AP Stats so forgoing that one, but taking Eng Lit and Psych. Cost was $93 was plus a “convenience” fee for paying via online system (ugh, but better than having to get a money order).

I’ve always figured I’d be the Hunger Games runner-up—really, really good at waiting as many bad options out as I can, but then I have to deal with whatever’s left. :slight_smile:

@nw2this , our medium size public school somehow got the funding from NMSI. We only pay half of fee for science and language AP tests. There is also an incentive system. You can get $50 for every 4, and $100 for every 5, so yes, D might still take literature anyway. It is European History which I am not sure is worth taking.

Any kids taking Euro History?

@MotherOfDragons #lifeskills LOL

College Board charges the schools 93. If your school is charging more, it is going to the school.

Good news in the mailbox. D’17 got the mailing from U of Ky confirming that she’s been selected for the Patterson Scholarship, an automatic scholarship for NMF.

Onward and upward…

We may have a new leader in the clubhouse - a Regents Scholarship to UCSB came today. Super stoked!

Congrats on all the great news you all have.

My son was just awarded some major Big Mac at Clarkson. Brings the total amount we’d have to pay to less than our state flagship by a decent amount! Was not expecting that, but certainly happy when son17 opened the letter.
He decided to not follow thru with their Honors college after he interviewed. He thought there might be too much research involved and was beter suited for kids in the stem fields vs businesss. So after he interviewed he told them politely that he would take himself out of running.
He plans to do more internships and extra curricular instead of spending time on honors college stuff. I think it was a good choicd.

Still not committed to going there yet, waiting for other offers. Kid drives a tough bargain.

Congrats to those getting good news today - love it! Very exciting.

Our mailman also delivered the goods today.

UMD Presidents Scholarship, $48,000. With her tuition remission, that makes it very, very affordable. D17 was air-punching in her excitement!

D won the Stamps Scholarship at Ole Miss!

Congrats to everyone on the great scholarship and admissions news this past week!

Wow, great day! Congrats all!!!

@SincererLove I don’t know if I should admit my daughter’s AP Euro grade, she took it sophomore year and got a 2 :)) over half the class got 1’s!

AP tests are required at my DS’s school… $93/test. Most teachers don’t have a final if in AP, so that takes the sting out for my DS - but not for me who has to pay. But, it’s known up front that it’s required.

Congrats to all who got great news today! I’m so jealous. The waiting is agony. March 17th “ish” couldn’t come any sooner!

Congrats on all the great news!

@itsgettingreal17 @NerdMom88 Woooohoooo! Congrats!

WOW WOW WOW - Congrats all on the good news and fabulous scholarships, in particular @NerdMom88 @itsgettingreal, @youcee, @Dave_N and @RightCoaster!! Also, a belated congrats on Smith to @dfbdfb’s D (any way to up the merit?)

And if I’ve missed anyone else’s good, bad, or indifferent news – high fives, hugs, and shrugs, respectively.

As for the QOTD - D has 3 AP classes (the rest are honors classes). Her (private) school requires kids to take the exams. Not sure how much $$ (around $90 apiece, if memory serves). I’m not amused, esp. if she won’t get credit for it. Not sure how to handle it…I do know that she will be missing finals week for Yale Bulldog Days, so she may need to take her final exams during AP week…not sure how everything will play out…

Huge congratulations to our 2017 kids mentioned above.

AP exam is not a requirement at D’s high school. The fee is $95 per test. I wish I know where D is leaning toward attending next year; it would for sure help her decide whether to take the AP exam.

For first I met another parent from this group ( @Ynotgo at Berkeley. I have at least 50 more to meet from FB group :slight_smile:

@RightCoaster Congrats on bigmac at Clarkson! It sounds like your son has a good head on his shoulders - I can’t wait to see where he ends up :slight_smile:

Wow, tons of great news today! Congrats on the fabulous scholarship awards:
