Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

That’s great you already heard about ED! Congrats! Hopefully we will all be getting good ED/SCEA/EA news in the coming weeks

Woohoo December! 4 of 10 applications are in. First decision expected in exactly 2 weeks.

all 9 apps in, 3 EAs…now we wait and focus on local scholarship money. phew, what a process!!!

Welcome back @liveonboca

D’s REA app decision could be as early as one week from today, or not. :-SS

D is finishing up her USC(Trojan) app/essay today, because well, to be redundant, it’s 12/1. Deadline day for merit consideration at 11:59 tonight. YeeHaw! The Las Vegas bookies have the over/under prop bet on D’s time of app submission at 9:30 PM tonight :!!

Anyone else going to UTD’s National Merit preview days? Registration is now open.

We signed up for Monday Feb. 19th because the kids have Presidents’ Day off. The plan is to drive up on Sunday stay over night and drive home on late Monday afternoon so the boys don’t miss any school.

Just a heads up, the form only allows for two guests plus the student, I had wanted dh to come too but think it’s more important for ds20 to tag a long. Registration form must also cross check a database somewhere because on the confirmation page it listed son’s middle name and it did not ask that information on this form.

@sushiritto My D says that LOTS of students at her HS are applying to USC, and that most of them were working on their supplements last night. Your D is not alone! Hopefully there won’t be Common App tech issues again tonight.

I had a mini panic attack this morning, certain that something was missing from D’s USC app. I made her log on to her portal to double-check that everything is in. It’s a fine line between being thorough and being neurotic. :-SS

D’s HS football team is playing in the state championship game tonight. Pre-party at our house for D and her friends. <:-P I’m really gonna miss this group of awesome kids.

@ShrimpBurrito

maybe next fall here https://news.usc.edu/111451/trojans-far-from-their-families-spend-thanksgiving-with-the-usc-president-instead/

or at calidad’s house… (both are fun!)

Love it, @CaliDad2020!

@ShrimpBurrito Tech issues? Well that makes me feel better. :))

And you MADE her log into her USC portal? How do you do that? Could you write a procedural manual? The last time I made my D do anything was to take a bath about 10 years ago. =))

Go Wildcats, Knights, Bears, Tigers, etc. I hope your D’s HS school wins it all! Last year D’s HS football team lost the state championship.

@sushiritto The HORNETS! We’re cheering for the Hornets! :stuck_out_tongue: (anonymity, schmanonymity…)

Common App had tech issues a day or two before the last big deadline…Nov 1, I think? It was so bad they shut the site down for a few hours, right? Lots o’ traffic!

ETA: Heyyyyy I’m a senior member now! :D/

D is working on UT and Vandy scholarship essays, due tonight. No rest for the wicked (or procrastinators), she’s going to need to start her next super-reach application right away, because we are spending Christmas in the land of no internet service!

I don’t think any of the HPYSM ED/EAs will be next week. I’m not sure if the inevitable rejection will spur D to get more done or if she’ll just collapse under the stress. Parenting is not for the weak…

My daughter was frantically working on her USC application this morning. This is her first application since the Oct 15 GeorgiaTech one. A month and a half wasted time that she should has spent working on applications.

She has another eight to ten to go and they are all due this month.

Yep, my S stayed up til 1 am completing Vanderbilt scholarship. Probably means he won’t get it! And I really hope for next week on the REA @sushiritto

It’s December people! Let’s hope for lots of good news.

@ShrimpBurrito Gosh, I hope the PA system doesn’t broadcast a "Bzzzzzzzzz’ sound the entire game. I’d be constantly flicking my ear and ducking my head. :bz

@ollie113 I’ve read thru a few school threads and frequently the 2nd Friday of December is THE DECISION DAY.

BTW, for advanced notice, if you don’t hear from me next Friday, think the final scene from Thelma & Louise, except my car is faster and sportier.

It’s so good to see other parents of procrastinators!

And @ollie113 I didn’t think there were many non-internet places left to go!

I was being nosy so I took a peek at the Questbridge thread since results just came out. I’m shocked that a kid named hamlon didn’t get it - 35 ACT 0 EFC URM and I’ve read some of her threads. She’s amazing. What the heck are they looking for?! I hope this isn’t a foreshadowing of this years’ admissions cycle. :frowning:

@melvin123 - I had the same worry. So many schools are reporting record numbers of early apps. I think 1999-2000 was a big year for births so our kids may be dealing with a larger applicant pool.

@melvin123 You’d be surprised. I have to borrow my mom’s Verizon iPad when visiting a lot of places in NM and AZ. No wifi anywhere, no AT&T service. National Parks are also black holes. I’ve already inquired about service at the new cabin and been told that if it snows there will be no connectivity except 3G cellular. Nearest Starbucks: 20 miles, if they plow to the highway.

There are wide swaths of UT and their National Parks that have zero service.
