S19 had some friends over last night. Some of them are boys he’s been friends with since 1st and 2nd grade. They took a bit of a trip down memory lane - all the sleepovers, Halloween costumes, Nerf gun fights in the back yard … I am going to miss these kids so much next year. They are all such great people.
Yes and no on the music and software. Our oldest is a music technology major with a business minor. In his world, everything is contract/project based and short term. S19 sees this and while he enjoys both (and his college does offer 2 music minors, one performance and one technology) he is currently planning on the performance minor. Which surprised me.
I am not a 3/2 fan either. This is all at his college, he would have to decide the MS by the end of his sophomore year I think which in his case, may be the end of his freshman year. We will see though. Everything we’ve heard supports your statement though, the same jobs will be available to him either through the Software Engineering or the CS path. And who knows what will happen once he gets there!
@RightCoaster Another criteria, in addition to not starting before 9am, my D16 used to pick classes was not meeting on Fridays. She loved getting 3-day weekends. She used the Fridays to do laundry or to start her fall or spring breaks early.
@momtogkc I wasn’t allowed to pick my classes for the 1st year of college either. Classes were MWF or TThS. Yes, we had Saturday classes (until noon). Horrible starting weekends at noon on Saturdays. I chose the school though. Don’t know what I was thinking at the time…
@elena13 I completely agree with you. I am very excited for my D19 in that she will be adding a bunch more kids to her lifelong friends list. I know the bond her class will form will be very strong.
The new profile picture says it all. My son made his decision to attend Tulane. Roll Wave!
Congratulations @firstwavemom !!
@trixy34 it’s very hard! I took a pic of the original four guys at prom. They’ve known each other since 2nd grade. The circle keeps expanding but they have remained buddies.
@firstwavemom Congratulations!!! There are always such great things written about it. Will he be far away?
Things are rolling along quickly here. 4.5 weeks left! Lacrosse season is fully underway and orchestra district competition was last weekend. Good scores and 2 lax wins today so it’s been a fun end to competitions and certain team match ups.
Congrats @firstwavemom - maybe we will see you there someday! We are trying to pick a day to go soon in June for TIDES but haven’t planned our family vacation yet so not sure when we will be available.
@drewsmom17 we are in the DC area so Tulane is 1000 miles away but a 3-hour nonstop flight and all 3 of our airports here have daily flights, so it’s not too bad to get to NOLA. It’s a great city and I have a friend from college that lives 10 minutes from Tulane’s campus, so that is a bonus!
When my friend took her daughter last year, the family rented a big SUV and drove down for move-in, so we may try to do that and visit Memphis and stop to see family in Atlanta. Then, we can fly home.
@momtogkc Yes, maybe we will meet up around move-in. Not sure if he will go down for the CAST registration stuff in June since we have been there twice since February. I think he can register for classes online and Skype with someone there if we don’t go.
@firstwavemom Oops - meant CAST - mixing up my nicknames! Yeah, we were thinking about doing it by Skype as well but I’m trying to find time to fit it in. Really hoping D can go the same day as her roommate so they can meet.
We were considering doing the rental SUV there and fly home plan as well but think we decided to scrap that plan and fly both ways. I just hate to add an extra day of travel because it means my younger two kids will have an extra day of their grandmother watching them - it is usually fine but harder on them since it is during the school week. I did read that if you mail packages they deliver them right to your dorm room so that is a plus. Hopefully that will mean the only big thing we will have to bring on the plane is a guitar, everything else we will try to ship I guess.
On an almost totally different topic - I know there are some parents here quite familiar with NOLA. Would it be a good spot for thanksgiving? We’ve been thinking about a fun spot to meet D19 for thanksgiving break. She only has break from the Thursday-Sunday so don’t want to go somewhere more than a relatively short flight for her. My younger kid has the whole week off so we can leave a day early.
WIth a whole nine days to spare, we made it official today. Bowdoin 2023!
Congrats @homerdog !
@homerdog Congratulations on your son’s decision!
Congrats @homerdog !
Great school!
Congrats @homerdog ! Sounds like Bowdoin is a great fit : )
And nice to have the decision made. Onward!
Great news @homerdog! Seems like it will be a wonderful place for him and it must feel so nice to have the decision made. What a journey!
Congrats @homerdog !
@SJ2727 Yes, I think NOLA would be a great spot for Thanksgiving. The weather is nice and there are great restaurants. There are plenty of airbnb rentals the would probably work well for a family gathering. Of course, you have the French Quarter, but Magazine Street nearer to Tulane is quite nice, as is Audobon Park in that area. The Tulane admissions blogs are great for things to do in NOLA and places to eat. Check the out for some ideas.
@homerdog Congratulations on your son’s decision!
@homerdog- Congrats on his decision!
@homerdog Congrats!
Congrats to ALL families on recent decisions!! Hang in there if your D or S are still deciding. Not long now until May 1st. Future Plans will be confirmed soon!
I’m looking forward to the next steps - housing, class selection, online pre-orientation, student & parent webinars, etc. Seems like stage one has been going on for years and years, right?
I am also looking forward to the first week of June when my S16 returns from abroad! Missing him a lot lately. What’s App is not the same as in person conversations. This mom needs a hug!
