Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Welcome @junk4rp ! Tell us more about your twins. Maybe we can help in some way.

@Cheeringsection,
twin1: hardworking, smart, perfectionist and yet anxious; was super busy in a full-day internship for the whole summer; wants to go to near-home state university, but wants to apply to a few more safeties and a few highly selective school (has stat to qualify) to see. Has started on the essay, but is not satisfied - has started filling both the common app and coalition (state university requires this). Needs to take a second SAT II in October for one college. Needs to get CommonApp essay reviewed and polished. School starting next week and will be extra stressed due to club leaderships and highly demanding classes.

twin2: not-so-hardworking, super-smart, procrastinator and yet gets perfect grades/scores; was not doing much the whole summer; wants to go an ivy league (ED), but wants to apply to a few more safeties and a few highly selective school as back-ups. Has started on the essay, but has not reviewed it - has started filling common app . Needs to take a second SAT II in October for a few colleges. Needs to get CommonApp essay reviewed and polished. School starting next week and will be busy due to club leaderships and highly demanding classes.

Both attend selective magnet IB high school program. I am not sure what help I am looking; mostly distressing by writing the post, I guess.

Hang in there @junk4rp ! I agree it is time for these “to do” lists to start having check marks on them, but it is not yet too late. I just booked the last campus visit for my DD20’s application list and confirmed due dates for test scores to be sent (my tasks in this process) so the now known 6 week window feels short, however, I know we will all get there together. My DD20 is done with testing but otherwise has a similar to do list as your twins.

Ha! I think you are “de stressing” not “distressing” which would cause you extreme anxiety, but we know what you mean, it’s a very stressful time for students and us parents!

@junk4rp, Are your Twins okay to go to different colleges ? Do they have any common ones on their list ?
I recently heard about Twins that were not happy at diff colleges, and transferring to the same college.
Maybe, they can apply to some common schools, and if Twin2 gets into a selective school, but not Twin1, they would support each other, regardless.
I did not mean to add to your stress (Totally get it), but something to think about !

DS is friends with identical twins that started at different colleges this Fall. One is going to Twin Cities and one to Iowa State. We’ve known them since they were little having gone through the whole scouting program with DS. They even were awarded Eagle at the same time and had a shared ceremony. Worked at the same place too. It seems odd to think of them going in different directions like that now, but I’ll bet they felt they needed to to find their own identity.

@junk4rp Hope your kids have some meets-full-need schools on their list!

@Cheeringsection you reminded me to create the “todo” list and start checking those off. You also reminded me to start the score requests, recommendation reminders and transcript requests. That may help to organize my thoughts. Anyone who has a good to do list?
@socaldad2002 haha! My autocorrect did not like me de-stressing…but thanks for understanding.
@NCKris at this time the twins goal and interest differs and they have their own lists - some schools overlap. But like I said twin1 wants to stay close to home to avail family support during stressful time and twin2 wants to get to the dream, out of town, ivy-league, if accepted. twin1 probably would not be happy in ivy-league and twin2 would be fine wherever. Both are applying to the good state school - if they end up there ultimately, we would be happy!
@bigmacbeth I am not sure what meets-full-need would mean in high price tag ivy-league when we would not qualify for any financial aid. Our state school is very affordable and the twins would probably get some scholarship.

My DD20’s HS has a parent meeting next week to tell us the official process for requesting transcripts, LOR, etc be sent to colleges. There will likely be forms of particular colors required with all applicable dates noted. I believe the students get the same information during the school day. That will mark the official beginning of application season and DD and I will not have a complete to do list until then.

My twins ended up at the same university (our state flagship). It’s a huge school and they each went their own separate ways but still saw each other regularly and even had one class together. It worked out well for them and it was so convenient for us!

My S put in his requests for reccomendations yesterday. It just hit me that he will be away to college this time next year.

Pardon my naivety but can my S have transcripts sent to schools before an application is sent to them? There is a 3 week delay before transcripts will be sent at his school.

@Octagon I was wondering the same thing. D wants to apply to several schools EA with 11/1 deadlines but still has to do a lot of work on her essay. I guess I will just email guidance and ask.

Just went to college application /financial aid/see D20’s classes night from 5:30-9. The college counselor (who happens to be my D’s counselor) said 5 days for transcripts. This appeared to be worse case scenario. The school website said two business days. Many on my D’s list ask after admitted.

MamaBear2001- Had the same feeling after visiting her last class. We happened to meet her old Girl Scout Leader whose daughter was in the class. Was her Scout Leader thru 8th grade. Our two were in the same kindergarten together. Kids aren’t friends but we chatted in hallway. We sorted bonded because we both only have one child.

It’s been a while for me, welcome to newcomers to the board!
Updates:

  • D20 passed her drivers test (Yay!) so we have another driver in the house
  • She has worked some on her common app, and finally got around to formally requesting teacher recs in Naviance (she had asked informally, but not done the last step)
  • She’s almost done with a monster Calc BC summer homework packet. School starts next Wed
  • She received application fee waivers from Fordham and Hofstra. Hofstra makes sense, she’s visited there and connected via Naviance with them. Fordham was out of the blue, but it was a school where she was considering applying which makes it surprising as they had no way of knowing that yet (no visit, not connected in Naviance)
Enjoy the three day weekend everyone!

Enjoy the 3 day weekend everyone. After this, we are probably going to feel like we’re part of a really big rat race.

D got her first acceptance letter in the mail today. She had gotten an email from the Admissions Counselor, but D said that getting the letter in the mail made it real. It was D’s top choice. Mom and dad have other top choices. We are waiting on merit money but according to NPR it should certainly come out affordable. We are going to an open house in September to check out the school and the program. Fingers crossed that it passed the Dad test. D thinks she’s done. I politely disagree. She’ll apply to the original list of 5 and see what happens from there. We still have 2 (this one and one other) to carefully evaluate before decisions can be made.

@Octagon your DC’s HS probably has a process to follow. Ours will not send transcripts until the application has been submitted. This avoids the students asking for far more transcripts than they need. Students can easily overestimate the time and energy they have to complete applications. Also, there is often an “unwritten” grace period for those items that are out of the students control, so do not get too worried unless the college makes it clear all “materials must be received by” a date.

Okay thanks @Cheeringsection. Good to know.

Congratulations @MuggleMom on the acceptance to your D’s top choice. Sounds like she’s well on her way to completing the whole application process very early.

Maybe others have gotten this but we got two emails from a Big Ten school, where we visited ,to apply today. Nothing unusual with that but both said and one was from the director of undergraduate admissions is that if she applied by October 15 she would get three free tickets to a football game. Has anyone heard of that?
