Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

Both the August and October dates are sold out in the schools closest to us. They won’t allow me to complete registration for September which is at the high school that we would normally go to. My daughter has an SAT on file from last fall but it’s not a good score and she definitely needs to retake. What happens when all these dates are unavailable and I can’t get her registered anywhere? Are they going to add additional dates? This entire situation is a mess and we are literally doing this for one school. All the other schools she is applying to are TO.

@Mcru1231 I would hope that one school would be understanding if you don’t have a score. They can’t require scores if you can’t get a seat, one would think.

Same here, got one for August at the same public school where he was supposed to take last 2 SATs. Fingers crossed for everything to go smoothly at least this time…

Here is a tip for people who might be making the same mistake I originally made - I tried earlier in the day to register and started (but was unable to complete) registrations for August and September. Then when I finally realized (thanks @sushiritto) that I needed to CHANGE the June registration, I was only offered October dates. I went back and deleted the incomplete Aug and Sept registrations, and then tried again, and that opened of August and Sept options for me.

FYI, the August 29 scores won’t be available until 9/21.

S21 was registered for two SAT2s (May and June) originally, and I would have really liked him to have those as a homeschooler, but we’ve decided to skip them, I think. One of the ones he was going to take is only available in June and Dec, so we’ll see about doing it in Dec (at which point it will only be helpful for his two RD applications and not for any of his EA ones). The other he was going to take was US History, so hopefully his APUSH score will be a 4 and we can use that instead.

@JanieWalker it’s for UPENN so they won’t care. They lifted the SAT subject tests so don’t have to worry about them thankfully but they still want a SAT or ACT submitted. She is a Philly student so we need for ED. Might have to see if I can get her in by October ACT.

That’s interesting. I bet CB will only allow you to register for one test date per student in higher demand locales like ours. After some time lag, CB may allow us future registrations too.

I wonder why scores will take longer than usual for August. The Oct 3 test date will have scores available 10/16, the usual thirteen days later. Hmm, maybe it will be like June has been the past few years, where College Board tries out multiple new forms for finalizing scoring scales.

I just came in to say that I was able to switch D21’s June registration to August, and also register her for September. I’d been trying every once in awhile just in case, and I was shocked that it worked!! No word on a refund for the March test or the May test.

As far as masks go, I would suggest trying lots of different ones. D19 has been sewing them in different styles, and some are definitely more comfortable than others. If you can make your own, you can also try different measurements and make the length, width etc. custom. Despite this, D21’s favorite mask is from Etsy. It’s made of satin-like material, which is supposedly not the best as far as deterring the virus, but it’s soft and light and she can not blow out a candle with it on.

Today is her birthday, and she is sitting outside on our back porch with three friends right now—all in masks and 10 feet apart. They are chatting away and happy, but normally they would all be hugging and crowding onto one couch. When I went to take photos, I had to stand on a chair to get them all in the frame, and for some reason, it made my heart hurt.

Best of luck to anyone still registering for the SAT, and lots of sympathy for the stress standardized testing is causing this year. D21’s three favorite schools have all gone test optional, which lifts some pressure, but she still wants to take it, partly because she feels like it’s a rite of passage  .

From the CB website, it seems we will be able to try for additional dates next week (June 3rd): (wording from their website follows) -

Priority registration for fall SAT dates is now open. Until June 3 at 8 p.m. ET, August, September, and October registration will be open to: Students in the class of 2020 or 2021 who don’t have an SAT score, and students who registered for the June SAT or Subject Tests and didn’t cancel.

Beginning on May 28, the following students will get a week of early registration access to sign up for August, September, and October tests:

Students already registered for the June SAT or Subject Tests who didn’t cancel their registrations
Students in the high school class of 2020 who don’t have SAT scores
Students in the high school class of 2021 and don’t have SAT scores
All students can register for the November and December tests starting on May 28. Registration for August, September, and October tests will open for all students on June 3.

Happy birthday to your daughter, @3SailAway !

@3SailAway Happy Birthday to your D! I’m glad she’s able to spend time with her friends (even if in a socially distanced way). I read that you can get through the process of registering for a new date (not changing from June) if your student has never tested before. Did your D test before ? If not, that would explain why you were able to do both - change her June registration and also register for a new date separately. I just tried again and was unable to register for a second date, but my S21 has a score from last October, so I believe that’s why.

Talked to D last night and she decided to just pull the plug on the June ACT. Theoretically they may still have it, she has a seat and we are in a fairly open state. But I think ultimately most sites will get closed. I don’t want her to keep studying and get burned out for a test that is probably less than 50/50 of actually happening.

Tentatively she is hoping for July, and she has been told the school is trying to offer it in August (normally we take it for the state assessment in April but that didn’t happen for the class of 2021 so they are trying to give them a chance to take it later). Overall this is just an aggrevating experience. Although much of life is right now, frankly.

Thanks for the book reviews above. We have been talking about the essays, and she seems on board with getting started so I think I will strike while the iron is hot.

Regarding the masks, my problem is that my glasses fog up. I’ve been in the store a couple of times holding my breath so I could read packages. It’s annoying and there is no way I could take a test unless I figure out a better way to situate the glasses and/or the mask. Probably it is less of an issue for kids, because if they have glasses they usually always wear them so have this figured out. But for an old guy like me, I just use them for reading. So I walk around without them, and then hold my breath and put them on to read packages. I’m sure it is humerous to watch, although I’m past the age of caring how ridiculous I look. That ship has sailed.

@dadof4kids - try a mask with a wire along the top to shape around your nose or tuck in part way under your glasses - trick from a surgeon

Got an August SAT seat! And trying to grab a Sept too but now it’s going around and around “processing” so not sure what’s up with that. Maybe I’ll open another tab and try to get an October seat while I wait. lol.

Was able to also successfully change D’s SAT registration to August. I was pleased that it was automatically no charge, unlike in March when I switched to June and had to pay then be refunded.

Thanks to all who posted about switching their registration this afternoon! I’ve been so focused on the upcoming ACT that I’d almost forgotten about the SAT.

D just got the CB email about the SAT. It says you can register this week for “August, Sept, or Oct” exams.

I can’t seem to get Sept or Oct registration to go through and I think that’s on purpose. So I’ll try next week to try to get one of those.

My brother was able to get September, all August seats were gone already. He’s not a happy camper but I think being in NYC September is a safer bet.

I’m totally laughing over here because I’m giddy that I got a spot but D21 won’t be thrilled. And we already decided that she might not even take it if masks are required. So I’m not sure why I’m so excited. Just good to have the option I guess. And, you know, FOMO.

I will cancel, of course, if we decide she won’t take it so someone else could have that spot. This whole thing makes me nuts.

D21 just met with the AP Lang teacher who will review her essays. Two drafts of a common app essay due Sunday. She has a topic but he wants her to write two separate essays on the subject and then they can talk about what she likes and doesn’t like about each one. I also think it’s just a way to get her to write more because it’s always easier to start with too much then to not have enough. He also told her not to worry about word count at this point.
