Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

I tried to get an August date for my D, but no testing site within 75 miles, so looking at September. I am wondering if the test site available in Sept–the only one within 75 miles was not offered in August. We are midwest, so I don’t think the SAT is as much of a hot ticket, but I may be wrong. I also wonder if more August dates will open up. That is what she would prefer…before school starts. Any ideas?

@1Lotus in Illinois there were a ton a schools offering the test within 15 miles of us in the Chicago suburbs. D’s high school isn’t offering August test but we got one ten min drive away. Same for Sept. Oct will be offered at her school. Do you usually have to drive far to get to a SAT test site?

I was finally able to reschedule but couldn’t even get on the SAT part of the site for about 15 minutes! When I finally did it was SOOOOO SLLLLOOOOOOOWWW. Anyway, D was registered for June but has decided to skip it. They’ve waived the SAT graduation requirement in Illinois, so she’s sticking with ACT. She’s happy with that score, especially if she can retake one of the sections, which looks feasible. Of course, there doesn’t seem to be a way to cancel online. I assume I have to contact them? Should have known they wouldn’t make it easy!

I think the rest of World is on the CB site right now.

Is this helpful for anyone? - full list of ACT site closures (as of today)

Got S21 registered to take the SAT for the first time in August. Same location as the spring. Five minutes from home. But the June ACT is now cancelled here.

Oh, and this just in. He doesn’t like any of his in-state options. After loving Pitt since last fall, it is now too far away. He’s never liked Penn State (his older brother goes there and it’s in the middle of nowhere). But maybe he’ll consider Temple now after refusing to visit. And none of the PASSHE schools are in cities.

I’m thinking the current mood has something to do with the stress of these schools (minus Temple which is TO) being the only ones on his list that require test scores and he won’t test for the first time until August. These schools are also the only ones we can afford without merit.

He also knows where he wants to go (Mr. InfiniteWaves and my TO alma mater) and all the other schools on his list are TO.

Ugh.

How much are subject tests required? My junior is taking SAT in August but refuses to sign up for subject tests in October saying most of the schools are already TO so having main SAT score is more than enough he says. What do you all think?

I don’t think any school requires the subject tests anymore. Some recommend them (e.g., Georgetown, some Ivies). What schools are on the list?

Edited to add: Here’s a good summary of the Ivies and test taking requirements/recs. https://www.thedp.com/article/2020/05/penn-admissions-testing-ivy-league

Completely concerned! I can hardly breathe in one myself for any length of time. If required, I’ll sew something basic with the thinnest fabric I can find to satisfy the requirement.

@Suave123 Only a tiny number of colleges are “recommending” subject tests for this fall’s admission season. They had fallen out of favor before the virus situation. MIT, Caltech, CMU, and Mudd no longer consider subject tests. Georgetown still recommends them, among a small handful of schools. Check each college’s website for their subject test recommendations and if your junior has a special program in mind, he should make sure there are no additional application requirements/recommendations for that program that might include subject tests.

It looks like the AP makeup request went through. It was recently added to my kid’s calendar in My AP.

We have been trying for over three hours to get through on the College Board website to register for the SAT. Website is a freaking disaster for us. Cannot get past the verify your account page. Then it crashes and says “system error.” Incredibly frustrating!

@homerdog The ACT is offered a Ds high school and several nearby. When I have looked into the SAT previously, there were a couple about 20-30 minutes away depending on traffic. When I checked Aug date for SAT there were only sites listed over 75 miles away. In Sept there was only one listed which was one of the two I had previously seen. My FOMO is scheduling for Sept, but then Aug opens up which is the preferred date. She needs to look over the registration information to make sure I put her classes input correctly. With all the excitement on CC, I want to be sure to at least grab a Sept date. She is planning to test for the ACT in June (if it happens) and has a decent ACT score already so not panicking about any of this. It does seem like a bit of a right of passage to know her SAT score, but not the worst thing for her if it doesn’t happen.

So @homerdog has me thinking…D21 was going to email her favorite English teacher from freshman year and ask if she would review her essays for her over the summer. Now that homerdog said he pays a teacher, is that rude??? Should I reach to her and offer to pay? Or D can ask if she would want to be paid? I’ve never met her, but D absolutely loves her. She’s not writing a letter because D only had her freshman year. Thoughts???

I am a healthcare employee and wear a facemask every single day at work. All employees are required even if they do not have direct contact to patients. My D wears one anytime she is out of the house. She has no problem with the facemask.

Nearly. Three. Hours. to register D21 for the SAT today. Unbelievable. It’s like they don’t need the money. We still cannot log in to see if it really happened or to print the ticket. No testing sites within 75 miles. Then seats were gone. Testing sites were filled. Dates were gone. I’ve used my swear word allowance up for the year. The next five maybe. Thanks for letting me vent. I hope your experiences were seamless.

My d is trying to register but she says that when she hits the link she was sent by CB it won’t load. Anyone else have that problem?

Happy birthday to @3SailAway,s daughter!

@inthegarden is she going to her June registration and then clicking the button to change it?

Done and finished with ACT and SAT. Going test optional
Lost $$ on Huntington but it is what it is.
Good Luck to the test takers

@homerdog she hit the link they sent her today and now she said she got into the change the date area and then it wouldn’t let her hit continue. She’s on her phone but now she’s going to try it with a laptop to see if that makes a difference.

She’s upstairs texting me (I’m downstairs and too lazy to see what she’s doing). She’s better at this stuff than I am but I’ve relayed to her the advice you all have given.
