My D23 got an email earlier this week saying she was approved for her make-up test. Is there something else we should do? I see posts like the one you wrote talking about requesting AP make-ups on the same day as the SAT early registration. I am afraid I am missing something. (?)
@Suave123 , subject tests can be important if your teen has been schooled in an unusual or uncommon way. For example, D21 is a homeschooler, so colleges would like to see SAT2 scores as a way to validate her coursework. D21 has only one SAT2 score to send in right now, and we were hoping for one more. We can’t register her for another one yet either (but we’re grateful we got a Sept date for the regular SAT). Her AP scores will have to suffice.
If your teen is in a normal public or private school, I wouldn’t worry about SAT2s.
I am really sorry there are so many problems with people trying to register for the SAT and SAT2s. What a giant mess. College admissions folks, if they have any hearts at all (and I am sure they do), HAVE to be understanding about this. Even the Ivies. Seriously, they should all go test-blind for everyone this year. How can they include testing data in an attempt to fairly evaluate applicants when a substantial portion of this year’s juniors couldn’t get test spots?
Got good news yesterday about D21’s Calc final exam grade. She got a C on the final, which is better than most people got (the teacher admitted she made the test way too hard). D21 honestly thought she outright failed it, so she was thrilled to get that C. Her final grade for the course is an A. She had thought it would be a B because of that final, but she got just enough points to maintain the A.
@nonosec - I see that my D’s test center is closed for ACT on the list you provided. Have you gotten and email stating your test center is closed reschedule?
Yes, that would have made sense…it seems crazy to put out all the closed sites…and the list is sorted by test center number, not state. Idiots. So many fun posts about this on twitter, good for a laugh!
Does anyone know of any test site for the ACT on June 13?
Edited to add: they reformatted the document, it is now sorted by state. I guess when the twitter roasting was nearing the levels normally dished out to CB and Trevor Packer, they took action!
The ACT list is actually 57 pages long and it is organized by test center code instead of location name. Wonder how many people can rattle off their test center code by memory?
You might want to dig around and see what’s the norm where you live. Where I live the teacher’s can not take a gift of over $25 from a student, so tutoring or essay help for money is a big no no.
For essay assistance, it would be normal to pay for that service where I live (Chicago suburbs). For any essay help, I would make sure that person has experience with college essays, as they are different than typical English class essays.
If teachers couldn’t tutor on the side here, there would be an uprising!
Beyond some of the essay books that have recently been mentioned on this thread, JHU, Hamilton, and Tufts all post ‘essays that worked’ every application season, so there are many real samples on those three sites.
It looks like indoor mask wearing will be a requirement. My D has been taking all of her practice tests with a mask, and she mentioned it’s now no big deal.
He took it last november for the first time…after that he was registered for our school SAT which was March 25 but cancelled when schools closed, was registered for April…Cancelled…June…cancelled lol. He was able to transfer the June registration to August at no charge.
@NJWrestlingmom I don’t think we have a rule about the dollar amount a teacher can receive as a gift. People around here buy pretty nice end-of-year gifts for teachers sometimes. As for tutoring, there are a number of teachers who tutor outside of school (mostly math and science) and it doesn’t seem like they are doing it on the down low. Lots of people know who those teachers are.
If you know the English teacher at all, I think it’s fine to reach out. I think I would probably act dumb and ask innocently if she’d be willing to read the essays this summer and into fall if needed. Say you’ve been thinking about hiring someone to help and not sure if this is something she’d be interested in. That way the ball is in her court to say yes or no or explain that she cannot help and/or cannot take money.
We are paying $100/hour. I think S19 used maybe ten or twelve hours. He had something like 15 essays to write. I don’t know if D21 will use that many because we may just use this teacher to review her Common App essay and her top three school’s essays and then have her do the rest herself. Not sure yet
