Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@SammoJ seriously. I can’t wait to see if anyone posts here that they are taking a June ACT. Another ball dropped by standardized testing companies. Why send a giant list of cancelled locations and make people dig through it? I heard it wasn’t even organized by state or alphabetically.

My understanding is that some are open in Illinois, but I am not sure how to figure out which ones.

The closed list is now in alphabetical order, by state

There are still a few centers open near me in Dallas/Fort Worth. I gave up though and changed D’s registration to the July test date at a location that is open for the June date.

This will be her first ACT. She is also scheduled now for August SAT. She has a score from the March date that was given at school the week before spring break. She was sick that day, so her score could be better.

Applerouth to the rescue with a google doc of ACT June 13 open sites, access here:

https://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/blog/2020/05/29/act-releases-june-site-list-and-policies/

They did this by using ACT’s list of cancellations, so if there are errors on that list, it would impact Applerouth’s list.

@Mwfan1921 Right. How to know where the test is still available? Isn’t that the info that people need? Honestly, though, I highly doubt there’s any room for more kids at the few centers that are having the test.

Cross posted, look at my post #5232

Agree it may be too late to change, but it could be smart to choose one of June’s open centers when signing up for the July test.

ACT CEO out, cost cutting measures commence:

@Mwfan1921 the Illinois list is odd. I thought it would be all downstate schools but it’s not!

Also, Applerouth site also says that kids got “displaced” from locations that are open because of social distancing. Not sure what’s up with that. I guess those kids will be notified?

Yes, some surprising schools open, including many parochials, one in my school district.

And that makes me even more infuriated that our HS refused to send an email to our students saying they had pulled out as a site for the June 13 test (they pulled out 2 weeks ago), because some kids may have been able to change their reservation to the parochial school in the next town over. I specifically asked the head of college counseling to send out a communication, and got reprimanded by the principal, no joke.

I don’t know about the displacement situation, and if those kids will have other options.

Question about registering for SAT as I’m not sure I’m reading the registration information correctly. I’m about to register S21 for September but may need to cancel (my son has accommodations and I’m waiting on some information from his school).

Based on the following quote from College Board website, does this mean, even if I cancel months in advance, I will still only get $10 back from the $52 fee?

"Before canceling, please know:

Registrations cannot be refunded later than five days before test day.
Canceled registrations are partially refunded—you’ll get $10 back, whether you were signed up for the SAT or the SAT with Essay.
Refunds are processed beginning six weeks after the test date."

List in the link was organized by state, then within the state alphabetically by city.

I got on and “tried” to change my June location. Got a message that it is too late to change, so I couldn’t tell if any centers are open.

@4kids4us Correct. You can never get a full refund. You can get $10 back or you can change to a new date for free. We’ve already eaten some money on SAT and ACT tests that both S19 and D21 decided not to take.

I finally registered for Sep SAT, then received ACT email that the site for June ACT was cancelled and that I could reschedule for free, but when I try to reschedule…it tries to charge me…what am I doing wrong?

My son took it in 10th grade and was registered for March which got cancelled. He had registered for subject tests for June so we couldn’t do the SAT registration. But now we are unable to register for August. How did you go about it?

@homerdog thanks for clarifying. It’s not that he won’t be taking it, it’s just that if his school administers it in school in September, then there is no need for him to register separately. Additionally, when I tried to register him, it says I need to contact the school for the test date and time. At the moment, we don’t even know whether they will be administering (he has a documented LD with accommodations). I’m waiting to hear back from his school advisor but I don’t feel like feeding the CB coffers unnecessarily, esp given how they handled the whole AP debacle.

Even if he was registered for an SAT Subject Test (not SAT Reasoning Test) in June, you should be able to change his registration to an SAT Reasoning Test for Aug, Sep, or Oct (if dates/seats are still available). You’ll just choose to switch the type of test during the signup process. Go to his June registration and click to change it (make sure to first delete any partially begun registrations for Aug, Sep, Oct).

@1Lotus – ACT will charge you when you are changing a test date but then refund the money. I’ve done it twice now – from April to June and from June to July and it’s come through ok on my credit card both times.

I don’t know why you can’t just change for free, but that’s not how their system is set up.

Tks for the folks who posted that June ACT cancellation list. The site where my S is scheduled to take it in July is NOT on the list so I guess that bodes well for him to actually take it.

I saw that Applerouth link – also very helpful! 61% of our test sites cancelled in NC so I’m sure folks are scrambling. What a mess!

Ok-was able to reschedule to July ACT at another school not too far away but not one that we have ever been to before-private Christian school. I am annoyed as another poster mentioned upthread that instead of just changing the test date, we had to pay again and hoping for a refund on the first one. Did someone mention that they were still waiting for a refund for the March test?

Thanks @AlmostThere2018 I think I was posting at the same time as you. I’m glad you received refund timely. Maybe I misunderstood that someone was still waiting for a refund or they were unfortunate, but not the norm.

Thanks for the essay responses! @homerdog and others. My husband teaches in the district so I know teachers can tutor. He gets $80/hour, although many have been lowering the rate to $50/hr since it’s on Zoom. Maybe I’ll shot her an email myself and ask about it and she what she says. I know it’s different than a regular English essay, but this teacher just finished her Master’s in English at Wake in 2017, I think? She’s young, so I’m thinking she’s probably pretty on top of it, but I can inquire. Thanks again!
