Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@NJWrestlingmom If she’s that young then, yes, I bet she’ll understand college essays. Hope it works out!

Hey guys, one quick question. Say I change my son’s June registration of SAT Subject tests to Aug, Will I also be able to get the SAT Reasoning Test for September?

@Momof3B In a way, you’re luckier than we are. (Not that any of us are very lucky with this SAT/ACT debacle.) My daughter wasn’t even given the option of switching her cancelled March SAT date to another date. CB just automatically refunded her payment and that was it. Now that action by CB has come back to bite us, because she can’t get priority registration for Aug., Sept., or Oct. dates.

Under “My SAT” It showed his June registration and there is a button that says “reschdule”…once you hit that new dates come up and the August 29th date was the first one the list and already selected…also it showed $0.00 for fees.

That sucks…I’m so over College Board and all their crap…I hope y’all get it worked out.

Unbelievably, our testing site is open for June ACT. I was convinced it would not be, so I switched D to July back in May. Now to hope July holds! Her friend actually got an email from ACT today that the test was on. ACT is not commonly taken in my area, so there are not may testing locations to begin with. When I signed up D, we had a choice of 2 locations under an hour away- one 30 min south, one 30 min north. I picked south because it’s in a better area for me (D doesn’t drive yet) to kill the morning. It is open- everything else within 2 hours of us is closed. Totally makes no sense, because the school that is open for the test isn’t even allowing teachers back in to get items from their classrooms.

Here’s an interesting article from today’s Wall Street Journal https://www.wsj.com/articles/will-the-pandemic-revolutionize-college-admissions-11590763879
I’m curious to know everyone’s thoughts.

ACT says that masks are optional during the actual test. How does that fly in a state where it’s mandatory to wear masks inside stores etc like Illinois? Are kids six feet apart?

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

@nichols51 , I think you’re right—my D has not taken the SAT yet, so that must be why the system let us register for two.

@4kids4us We’re in the same boat. Since the June administration was cancelled, shouldn’t they offer refunds, as they did in March?

The article is behind a paywall. What is the gist?

@homerdog I would imagine that local and state regulations regarding mask use would trump what the ACT recommends. This would probably extend to maximum room occupancy, group size, minimum distance, etc.

@alwaysmoving That’s a great idea to take practice tests while wearing the mask. Then it won’t be a distraction if it’s required to take the real test.

@mamaedefamilia Hm. Well, I’d like to know masks or no masks for sure. I guess the Aug SAT is three weeks after the kids go back to school so I should be able to ask.

This is my understanding of how it works: Since you said in another post that your son took the SAT Reasoning in 10th grade, he only falls into one of the two priority registration categories. His June test was cancelled, so he gets priority registration to change that test (can change it to SAT Subject or SAT Reasoning on another date). But once you do that, he doesn’t have any other priority registration (since he’s taken the test before) and you’ll have to wait until next Wed, June 3rd, to attempt another registration for him.

I agree - those with March and May cancelled registrations should have also gotten priority registration. We had March cancelled (reasoning test) and had May and June originally scheduled for subject tests. When March got cancelled, I changed S21’s June registration to the reasoning test in hopes that he’d be able to take it in June instead of March. Obviously that didn’t work out, but I still consider us relatively lucky at this point.

@nichols51 I’m not sure if it’s true as my son is a priority student as his June SAT was cancelled, and he did switch his June SAT subject test to an August SAT regular test with an addition of $4. Now I just wanted to check if he can register for his subject test in October (As September doesn’t offer subject tests), I’m still able to see test locations for October. So, I guess he is priority for all three months. (Aug, Sep and Oct)

Also, I see in another thread, @InfiniteWaves has mentioned the below msg…

We have S21 registered for August and Sept.

At about 12:30 PM PST yesterday, I was able to change D’s June canceled registration to August 29, but I’m not able to schedule any other tests in the September and October time frame. The message states that I have to wait until 6/3 at 8:00 PM EST to register for any additional SAT tests.

I didn’t try to schedule a November test.

@Suave123 yes, priority is good for a test in any of the three months.

Has your S taken the regular SAT (not subject) before ? If not, then he would get two ways to do priority registration - the first would be switching his June test (as you did) and the second would be registering for an additional Aug/Sep/Oct test (as you’re thinking of doing). But if your S has already taken the regular SAT before and has scores on record, the system may give you an error after you get further into the process (past looking at the test locations as you’re doing).

From CB website:
“If you don’t have priority status and try to register during the priority window for the August, September, or October test dates, you won’t be able to proceed past selecting a test center until 8 p.m. ET on June 3. After that time, you’ll be able to register for any SAT or SAT Subject Test date with available seats.”

I know I could see test centers when I was doing it yesterday but would get booted from the process after selecting a test center and trying to complete the registration (because I only had the type of priority registration that allows me to change the June test to Aug,Sep, or Oct). I was successful when CHANGING the June registration but not when adding a new registration (since my son already has scores on record).

I’m sure @InfiniteWaves is the better person to clarify this, but I believe I saw @InfiniteWaves say elsewhere that the August date would be S21’s first SAT. He was registered, I believe, for June. That means he is in the category of fitting into both types of priority registration. He can change the June date and then also register for another. But that isn’t true for me (whose kid already has an SAT score on record).

Basically, I think if your kid already has an SAT score on record but had a June registration, they only get to choose one priority timeslot in either Aug, Sep, or Oct. (This scenario doesn’t apply if your kid doesn’t have an SAT score on record).

Best way to know is to try, I guess!

Yes, you are correct, it’s not letting us register for another month (October) as we already used our one priority for August. He already took one SAT last year so doesn’t qualify for second priority. Have to wait until June 3rd to register for October…urrrggg ?
