Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Holy crap! Can you possibly share his stats? THat is absolutely amazing and unheard of. SO many rejections for so many talented kids and then your kiddo scores 4 of the best! Outstanding!

Congratulations! My vote is for Lehigh (not that my vote counts!). It is an absolutely STUNNING school and kids are so happy.

Good to see some Lehigh love, we are doing Lehigh fest April 13. We toured it two years ago so it’s a bit blurry in her mind. And it was pouring rain, and we never saw the town, so will be good to re visit.

I wouldn’t count on it being the same in college. Where is he going again?

Great advice. Most of the kids in the intro class will have a physics background.

Has to be the University of Texas. It’s the greatest school of all time - my unbiased alumnus opinion.

@Alqbamine32 - do you mind sharing which schools? And I’ll see you here soon! I also have a D30. Let’s hope that the birthrate cliff makes things easier!!!

williams, there is no way he should repeat calculus 1 and 2, the teacher is very experienced and prepares them well

As an example, my D23 used the free score report and then opted to send College Board $10 via snail mail (the only accepted process, grrrr) to withhold reporting her AP Stats score to the college because she didn’t want to place out of that class in college. There wasn’t a college-designed placement exam for that, an intro stats class was required for the Minor she wanted to do, and if you got a high enough score on the AP exam, you’d automatically place out of it. Now, she didn’t really want to take it again! Stats is not her thing. But she wanted to use the college stats class for a math/quant requirement (which she couldn’t do with the AP score - no distributive requirements can be met at her school with AP scores), and she wanted to learn what she needed to learn for the Minor and thought the college class could be different than the high school class. She’s glad she did that because while her AP Stats class gave her some background that made the college class a bit easier, the college class was quite different (programming in R, for example, which wasn’t part of her AP Stats class). So even when we’re not talking about a calculus progression/acceleration, there are times when one might not want to send the score (situation/student dependent).

S24’s admitted colleges are literally all in our home state except for two. He has a list of priorities and is ready to commit to one after the holiday weekend, but I am keeping quiet at this point because all of his choices are good ones. College is what you make of it more than where you are as long as you at an accredited institution. I can certainly empathize with that feeling, but once he chooses, I did counsel him to not look back.

ok, that makes sense. It looks like Williams does not do automatic advancement. I was concerned more that he would do poorly on one of the physics C tests and it would be an issue, but can he suppress that one in July of this year?

This group and College Confidential in general have been incredibly helpful in understanding the current admissions landscape, especially in regards to yield management. Because of this, my high stats S24 was not at all surprised to be waitlisted or rejected from schools that might have been “likelies” or “targets” with high stats a few years ago.

His main desire was to attend a medium to large school in a big city. Our budget was around $12,000. He submitted A LOT of applications to try to make this happen either through financial aid or merit scholarships. He has been fortunate to receive acceptances from a number of school he likes, including a few yesterday. Five of the acceptances are in our price range and a number of financial aid offers are still pending the FAFSA. A few others (NYU) are completely out of our price range, which we kind of knew would be going in, but he loved so much he was hoping for a financial aid miracle so he applied.

For anyone looking for urban schools with good aid and/or merit for a similar applicant, I will post more specifics on the result thread.

Williams is the one that keeps getting away, lol. I just want ONE of my kids to go there so I can keep visiting.

Last result came in yesterday
WL at NYU. D expected a rejection so WL felt like a win. And she had already pretty much gone all in on Fordham after the great merit offer. Ordered a sweatshirt and researching how to get the best deals on Broadway tickets. :hugs:
I will do a longer recap on the results thread at some some point, but for now

Final tally was:
SCEA rejected
BU WL (that one hurt)
NYU and NEU WL
Accepted at UMD, UMASS, UCONN, UVM, UNH, UAlabama with a mix of merit and honors
Accepted Muhlenberg and Brandeis
Fordham Gabelli business school scores the win. I think it’s a good match and they are lucky to get her
I also could not have done this without CC and especially the parents of 2024. Thanks to all of you!

Check out the official policy linked here for withholding a score - I believe you need to send in the form and $10 to be received by June 15 (before your S would even have that score)
but then he could release it later if desired. That’s how we interpreted it last year. Ugh, College Board. Basically they want that $10, I think! And I don’t know why you can make this request online and pay online
mailed or faxed payments only - it’s like ordering something from a catalog in 1988.

Wow. That is crazy. I guess we can see how he feels after the test. Or honestly maybe not worry about it. Will they withdraw him for a 2 during the summer for a class he is going to take again?

No - I don’t think there is a risk of that! My kid just withheld that one score (high, not low) because she didn’t want the automatic exemption from that AP Stats class. And yes, it’s a crazy stupid CB process.

My spouse is an alum and my daughter was accepted last year (she ended up elsewhere due to the particular major she wanted to pursue). They paid for us to come visit on accepted students day, which was awesome! Such an absolutely beautiful school. Make sure you go in the library!

Final tally for my unhooked kiddo who applied to computer science:
D24: Small private, 4.0UW, 1560 SAT, club founder, decent EC and IT-related jobs, solid recommendations.

Reach:
Vanderbilt - WL
Richmond - accepted

Target:
UVA - accepted, offered Echols Scholar, will attend.
South Carolina, accepted + Honors College, in-state tuition + small merit
William & Mary - accepted + Monroe Scholars
Univ. of Delaware - accepted + Honors College + merit

Likely:
James Madison - accepted + Honors College + Madison Excellence award
Randolph-Macon - accepted + Honors Program + Presidential full tuition.

All in all, we are very pleased that he got into the CS major at each school that had direct admit. He was planning to go to South Carolina Honors until they announced the Russell House teardown project, plus the pressure to maintain a 3.0 to keep his scholarships. UVA Echols offer came through and the academic freedom that provides was too good to pass up. Overall we are very pleased with his outcomes. We gave him clear financial guardrails up front, he did a great job building a list of schools that could work.
