Parents of the HS Class of 2026 (Part 2)

You can celebrate here any time you want!
We ended up skipping blue devil days because we were just there for cheer and honestly I had no desire to fly back (or drive).
Duke does an amazing job though.

To make you feel better, D26 is a public school girl and in fact our HS is title 1 (although she’s in an IB program that is mostly the upper middle class kids). But she does not have prep school or cliquey anything about her. There is a lot of wealth there but also regular people too. Your daughter will find her people.

Experiential orientation is one of the best parts of Duke and many kids connect there as well as dorms . S24 is on the exec board for his group, and that was something I never thought he’d want to do but he loved it so much he likes to give back now to incoming freshmen .

So S26 is set on UCD, he’s been looking into the program more and is now excited about it. He’s also been locked in for his studies now, where was this kid the last 2 years ? every exam has been aced except English which he still doesn’t know what the teacher wants and has gotten zero feedback on his work. Seeing his friends go to more “prestigious” schools made him realize maybe he needs to do the actual class work. I am optimistic for his future if he keeps it up.

He also randomly brought up that he wanted to rent a tuxedo for his prom. Why ? one of the teachers said you won’t get a chance to wear a tux again. When is prom ? next Friday!! so we went to the mens wearhouse, btw they don’t have the “You’re gonna like the way you look, I gurantee it” guy anymore. They were packed with kids from his school and tired parents who were also doing this last minute. We get there at 7 and are last in line and after 30 min of waiting the tired women working there told us one of the people in front had 2 kids but didn’t put them on the list so could we come back tomorrow. She looked so tired I didn’t argue even though it was annoying to waste 30 min. We see her the next day and she’s super nice and without us even asking gave us a $60 discount.

On the way back he says can we go to the mall he needs pants.

Pants I say what for ?

Oh for your seersucker jacket.

Why do you need to wear that ?

Oh I am going to N’s prom, I didn’t mention it.

No you didn’t ok we’ll go buy pants.

People, I was dying with excitement. First he’s not going to his prom with a girl he’s going with a bunch of his buddies. He’s never mentioned going anywhere with N. He’s now going to two proms. It’s a big step for a kid who usually spends his weekends on Fortnite or Roblox with his friends.

Clearly N asked him because she’s a lot more assertive and also she goes to an all girl school. I have known N and her family since S26 and N were in 1st grade together. We are very close friends. I don’t know if they know N and S26 are going together. I am sure they are going as friends but still I am happy for him. Generally S26 has the personality of a shy turtle around people who he’s just met. Not with N, since they have known each other forever. They used to play Mario Kart together and she was the only one in his group of friends who would regularly beat him.

I know this is just a parent perspective but they both look amazing. S26 is skinny and 6’2” and looks like a Kpop idol way better looking than either of his parents. N is 6’ blond blue eyed and is lead actress in a bunch of plays at her school. They will make such a cute couple.

S26 has never gone out with a girl, he’s just never been comfortable enough to say yes to any of the many girls who have asked him out. I’ve been at concerts with him and girls will come up and say hey do you want to go hangout afterwards and he’ll just look uncomfortable and make an excuse. So this is a big first step. Also an excuse for us and N’s parents to get together when they are off at prom.

I love all of this so much. Congrats on UCD and being excited!

And hooray for a 6’ prom date – my D26 is just north of 6’ and she loves being that height, but she doesn’t know a lot of 6’2” guys she wants to go out with. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

(She is also the girl that can beat her guy friends in Mario Kart, lol. Her plan tonight is to ditch prom early right after they take the senior class picture at 10pm – and go see the new Mario movie with three guy friends.)

He can star in the Sky Castle sequel.

That’s how the intermediate sizes SUV rental was when we drove D24 from AZ to TX for freshman move in. Every inch inside that vehicle was packed!

You did an amazing job! Wow! That rug really transforms the room. I’m definitely getting one for D26 seeing this. What did you use to get the wall decor to stick? We’ve been told Command Strips are not allowed and that’s concerning me. But overall I think I still have PTSD from S24’s dorm “set up” which took all of 7 minutes because he’s very anti-stuff. Not for any political reasons, he just truly sees no need for much of anything beyond a few basics plus sports equipment. No amount of “gee, you might appreciate a week’s+ worth of clean socks plus a couple of extra sweatshirts” or “most people actually DO have a wastebasket” could move him. I had to let go of every last one of my dorm decorating fantasies and I am still bitter! Now I have another chance with D26, who looooves stuff and has the cutest style. But since we’re in a minor “claiming independence / soiling the nest phase,” I’m playing my capet-curtains-comforter cards close to the vest at the moment.

I’m looking forward to shopping for college stuff but also trying to remember how much we overdid it for our first son. You can almost always buy stuff when you get to campus, and internet shopping exists. Plus, if you live far enough from campus that you can’t drive back and forth all the time you have to figure out what to do with all that stuff over the summer. Oldest Son’s college wouldn’t let us store things over the summer, which I’m finding is a common if annoying policy.

We’ve had good luck so far for D24 by having her rent a small storage unit for the summer.

I think storage places near colleges do very well over summers!

Looks like C26 may have found a roommate.

This was not where I expected to be at this point. We had a check in with D26 on where she is at on deciding. I really think it is going to come down to the final day or so before she makes a decision. I think there are now three in contention with different pros and different areas she’s hesitant about. But she said her gut and vibes are not leading her to one place over the others at this point. Our hope is that she will do the outreach she talked about so she can talk to some students with perspectives on some of the things she feels like more information would be helpful on. Also realizing today that I oddly feel a bit sad for her. She has all of her top choices to pick from, but has reservations about each of them. I know, this is a problem most would feel lucky to have. And we do feel lucky. But it has been jarring to be in this moment and she has no excitement about the options due to being stuck in her comparisons.

Wife and I talked tonight about how part of our job will be to get her excited about whichever school she picks. Because they truly are great options for her.

P.S. this is the only place I can share this because the actual people in my life would likely want to kill me if I whined about this. “Oh poor us, D26 got everything she wanted, but none of the schools are 100% perfect for her.” The facts are ridiculous, but the emotions are real.

The facts are not ridiculous. This is just the unfortunate reality of picking a college – there are pros and cons to every school. And that’s overwhelming for a teenager.

Editing because I just reread your post. It’s hard to choose among three schools. See if she can eliminate just one school based on a negative factor that she just can’t live with. When she’s down to two, I think flipping a coin works well, honestly. If you don’t like what the coin says, then you’ve got your answer.

Do you and your wife each have a top pick for her? Is it the same school? If so, you could gently broach the topic by saying, “I know you’re conflicted, but we really see you at X school, and here’s why.”

Putting aside things like food, dorms, ease of travel – did she like the vibe of the students at any of the schools more than others? Did YOU like the vibe of the students more at one school?

If all else fails, maybe help her make a weighted decision matrix?

I truly feel for her! (and you!)

With my D (who is still undecided), it is very tempting for me to offer my thoughts and advice… but I’m trying to refrain from making such comments unless specifically asked. Sometimes in retrospect my D will mention that she felt that I convinced or pushed her to do something, when I thought I was just offering advice. So I’m trying not to do anything that can be seen as convincing or pushing, in hopes that she will feel ownership of her decision. Trying anyway.

I agree eliminating one would be helpful. I don’t think my wife and I have a top pick for her. But, I do think we both think one of the three has a potential negative for her that should put it behind the other two. Hesitant to weigh in on that unasked, but may raise it at our next check in.

For the other two, I think talking to current students (there are alums from her high school she can talk to at all three) will give some additional perspective on her concerns. My hope is that she follows through on that, and either one will emerge (good or bad), or we can help by weighing in then.

Edit: On the vibes of the kids. Not sure her thinking. I thought the vibes of one fit her best. My wife thought another. We both think either vibe is great, but they are very different (I’ll shorthand as SoCal low key and friendly vs mid-Atlantic earnest intellectual). She has both in her.

Another way to help compare schools is looking at each of them through the lens of feeling stressed or sad. Every student will experience moments of stress and feel overwhelmed…no matter where they go. So which school appears to offer your daughter the best support and options for her to find balance so that she can ultimately thrive? How does she envision herself handling the tough times? What does she need in those moments?

For my D22, she knew that she needed a great live music scene and a variety of coffee shops to help her balance the academic stress. And when she analyzed each school with these criteria in mind, it became clear that UW Seattle was the school for her. And she was right…she took full advantage of what Seattle had to offer and had an amazing experience at UW.

This is an interesting perspective. And yes, I think my D22 did the same without realizing that’s what she was doing. She was drawn to a school with residential colleges. She knew she didn’t have the social chops or interest to pursue Greek life, yet she wanted to find community – so residential colleges were appealing.

I think that’s part of why N asked S26, they were both quiet and had trouble making friends in middle school both stood out as tall and lanky. I suspect like you said they will end up leaving early with other friends going to Taco Bell or something similar.

We are in a very similar boat….all visits done and no clear winner. There are pros and cons to each and at this point I am not sure where she will end up. She says it’s very stressful. And she has three good options - but none were the Goldilocks we were hoping for.

She’s tired and I’m tired so I’m hoping with a day of rest and a pro/con list - her choice will be easier.

I think mine is going to make some calls and talk to some more students. One stands out as a clear academic match for her — and we don’t know if the vibe issue is real because she did meet some students she really liked there. The others are not as good academic matches but maybe better vibe matches. One has great weather while another has a great location.

Knowing what we know now — I maybe would have helped her make a different list? But we had so much financial need - I set that as the priority. And honestly, how many schools have non-traditional - very experiential - academic approaches? Not too many!

Wife and I went through the same conversation last night about whether a different list would have been better. We ultimately concluded no. All the other schools we could think of, have one aspect or another that create similar dilemmas or questions for her. We’ve settled on the fact that the perfect unicorn she was hoping for does not exist. At least, it does not exist in a way that would be obvious from the limited information one has at the time they need to make the decision.

In reflecting on D26s situation more this morning, ironically I think part of the reason she feels as she does is actually because she has done an extraordinary job of self-reflection and thinking through all of the aspects of what she wants and what makes her thrive as part of this process. As a result, she is keenly aware of the elements at each school where she is unsure if the school meets a particular criteria. It’s like the situation where if you don’t know anything you can be blissfully ignorantly confident on the subject. However, once you have dug in more and gained some knowledge, you become painfully aware of how little you actually know and end up with more questions than answers.

In truth, there is no way for D26 to get all of the information she might want such that it would be meaningfully reliable at this stage. But, like you, we have encouraged D26 to reach out to a few more students at a couple of the schools to get some more data on some of her areas of concern. Our hope is that a bigger sample size will make her feel more, or less strongly about those concerns (honestly either is fine so long as one institution rises more to the top in the next 12 days).

And again, all of her choices are great and she will find her people and path and make adjustments at any of them. This part is about getting her more confident about whatever decision she makes.
