Project Runway 2015 Edition! Who's Watching!

Tasteless and tacky . . . there are no other words. (And you couldn’t figure skate in it - you’d get caught in the sleeves!)

But I loved the ending. (Will he? Won’t he? Will he? Won’t he?)

Okay now, wait a sec . . . is it possible the whole thing was a set up? Edmond was so stoic through it all . . . maybe it was all deliberate, just to add drama and keep us all (or, more likely, us few) around for another week.

^Agree that Edmond took it really well - too well.

Clearly the production budget has taken a hit and it shows. The challenge prize was sponsored by Best Western?!? It’s long ago jumped the shark.

I begin to feel like they deliberately manufacture the situations – perhaps even allowing or pushing Edmund to do something so uncharacteristically stupid. He couldn’t have done worse if he had…been told to. Rainbow sparkly dress with NO class or character or thought? And they cut the end off just to make us wonder if Tim gave him a save (which Tim absolutely owes him.)

Ashley, Ashley, Ashley…such a whiner. And that dress was disgusting, and ugly, and poorly fitting. What person wants to wear a colorchanging sequin gold…just no. No, no, no.

It’s jumped the shark, but I still watch it!

I’m glad others share my dismay that Edmund was auffed but Ashley – she of the questionable taste – is going to Fashion Week. I’m ready to be “surprised” next week when Tim saves Edmund, and having the four contestants show in NYC. If that doesn’t happen… well… shoot. I’ll still probably watch next season

Edmund is my favorite of the final four, but his dress was clearly the worst this week. That being said, if the Tim Gunn save hadn’t been left, I’m sure the judges would have given their usual: “Your dress was bad but you’ve done well all season so we want to give you one more chance to prove yourself” blah blah blah, and then sent nobody home. I’m pretty sure Tim will save Edmund; not sure he would have saved Ashley.

Re the trip to LA and Best Western: the whole point of the trip was to give them a reason to stay in a Best Western, which was a sponsor of the episode and which paid for the product placement. You would have thought they would have done a better job of integrating the trip into storyline for the episode by giving it more of a purpose. It was very clunkily done and the trip obviously had no other purpose than for advertising.

Because that Finding Neverland challenge was integrated so smoothly.

I am not sure we have run out of talented designers…possibly they should consider selecting designers with more emphasis on skill set than on TV personality. I yearn for the early seasons. The shows were not as polished and the best ones usually made their way to the top (except I’m still jacked up about Miss Granny Pants), but at least the challenges were legit.

I too will continue to watch.

Any doctors on this thread. Every week I find myself worrying about the puffiness of Kelly’s neck and keep hoping someone will send her to get her thyroid checked!

I do think that Tim Gunn will “save” Edumund. Next week’s episode says there will be a surprise. My guess is Tim only felt a couple of designers this season would be worth using a “save” on and I’d say that Edmund is one of them, despite this weeks bad dress.

And I agree that the show was better/classier on Lifetime. If not for Tim Gunn I would have stopped watching quite a while ago.

Have any designers who were ever on the show (before or after the move to Lifetime) achieved any career success, other than Christian Siriano? Even among the winners?

Remember the guy who began making costumes? He had his own show for a few months.

Chris March? But that was many years ago already.

It’s been a while, @DonnaL. Austin Scarlett did some higher-profile bridal gown work at one point (and co-starred with Santino in a fashion “reality” show) and, as you say, Chris March got some press after he designed an Oscar dress for Meryl Streep. Also, Mondo was a name for a bit – but haven’t heard much from/about him in a couple years.

Michael Costello gets a few dresses on the red carpets every year.

I don’t know how one defines career success in this industry. Some alumni of the show could be making a decent living in non-glamorous jobs, like designing for H&M or assisting a name designer, and perhaps they wouldn’t have gotten that far absent having the show on their resumes. They may not be famous, but they’re getting to do the work they love, just as some winners and near winners of the singing competition shows manage to earn a living in the music industry even though they aren’t stars, and some America’s Top Model alums might get a paycheck for appearing in J C Penney ads even though they’re never seen on runways or in magazines. As my mom would say, it’s better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Don’t remember the seasons but Chloe dao (sp?) has store in Texas. Features on little couple show. Recently on SayYes to the Dress featured Scarlett Austin dress

Many of the contestants have had small, local design businesses before coming on the show, and the exposure from the show probably helped to boost those businesses a bit.

It would be truly extraordinary – and against all odds – if someone from Project Runway were to become successful on the level of heading up a nationally or internationally recognized brand. The odds against any particular designer achieving that kind of success – no matter how talented – are so massively against that I would be very surprised indeed if any Project Runway designer did. Even if success on the level of Siriano is the marker, it is still pretty hard to achieve that level of success and the fact that one designer has done it is a pretty good track record.

Moreover, to be on PR, you not only have to have ambition to be a designer, you also have to have ambition to be a television personality. Many of the contedtants seem to have pursued that path after leaving the show, with at least modest levels of success.

The woman from a couple years ago who tended to design flowing kaftans and swim coverups has her own store at some resort area in Florida. I read once that it was quite successful. Just cannot think of her name.

I remember her… originally from Germany, I believe. But she had that store before the show. As did Chloe.

In general, I agree (as usual!) with nottelling. It would be unusual for any of these contestants to become a Michael Kors. That said, you could probably make a good case for saying that the show boosts contestants’ odds of making a living in fashion, at least for some time.
