I was finally able to catch up over the weekend. My my, Ashley’s execution was terrible - those zippers! I always loved What Not to Wear because stressed looking good with the bodies their ladies had at the time. They always seemed to have tips on flattering looks for plus sized women. Ashley’s looks, for the most part, aren’t flattering.
I generally agree with your comments. EXCEPT, despite hating Ashley’s bridesmaids collection, I like the idea of a crop top on a plus model. That part of the rib cage is probably less cringe worthy (at least on me) than anything cropped to show actual waist. But the top must fit and cover.
I really feel Ashley only survived because she wanted to do something plus-sized which is an admirable goal but she isn’t good at it! She wore a big yellow skirt with an elastic band for the last runway. Tell me WHO looks good in that? She regularly wears clothes that don’t fit. I cringe every time she wears that denim vest that is 6 times too small for her. She is supposed to be a designer! Sew yourself something that fits.
Not to mention flowers on your head like candles on a cake. She liked those more than worrying about crooked zippers and ill-fit clothing.
I*m upset because I’ve known some really big women who could pull off great looks that I really admired for their fashion. Professional, put together and very attractive and they did it in what was already available in stores. Someone who aspires to plus-size should be offering a new design made specifically for the market.
Wow, I thought the most startling thing in that article was Tim’s critique of the judges! This season was disappointing all around–the talent, the judging, and Tim’s mentoring. His displeasure with things doesn’t excuse his own checked-out performance. Maybe it’s time for a new mentor, as well as some new judges.Or maybe the show has just run its course.
He’s made public statements critical of the judges before and also has made extremely blunt public statements about individual contestants, so it doesn’t surprise me all that much.
I saw him speak at a public event a couple of years ago and he made scathing comments about Kenley Collins, calling her out by name.
And then there was the time he said, in print, “The judges this year were smoking crack.” I’ll see if I can find the reference.
ETA: the first place he refered to “crack-smoking judges” was at a speech at the 92d Street Y but then he reiterated it print. Here’s a clip:
What I don’t understand, is Edmund kept saying he had tried out for every season since the beginning. If a talented and devoted designer like himself had to try 13 times before being accepted, who are they looking for exactly?? I would think he is exactly what Project Runway was created for (and a shining light in this season, for both talent and temperament). I find that very disappointing that they seem to be casting for attitude rather than talent.
I really hope they start giving them a little more time to create quality work in the next season. No more “make a couture ball gown in 20 minutes”. Also, seriously, they couldn’t have a supply of basic buttons, zippers, fasteners on hand for them?
With this show, as with any other talent contest type of reality shows in which I become involved, I have to keep telling myself “it’s a TV show.” Yes, you hope it helps their careers in some way, but it’s a money-making enterprise that needs to pull ratings.
I’m sure Edmund improved a lot with age and experience. And in the old Bravo days when he started the audition process it took more to get on the show I think. He is now one of the ones with more experience which gave him a better shot at winning so it’s probably to his advantage.
Just got off a Delta flight. Had to chuckle…Zak Posen is the cover photo and feature article for the November Delta magazine. He is 35 and grew up in a Soho loft to an artist father and Wall Street lawyer mother. At age 16 he did an internship with Nicole Miller and I guess that set him on the path to designing.
I loved Candace’s last red gown but wasn’t crazy about the rest of her collection. Some of Kelly’s stuff was nice but I was more impressed with the textures she created with her fabrics than I was with the actual clothes. I did like her first look - the long white dress with the copper colored collar. I liked almost all of Edmund’s dresses, even the white one at the end. But there wasn’t anything about Ashley’s collection that I liked. I just don’t get all the high praise she’s been getting. I hope Edmund wins it.
Ashley?? Really??? I think I am finally done with Project Runway. I loved Kelly and her collection, and would have been fine with Edmund winning. Ashley’s was just bad - not one interesting thing and the headpieces were terrible. The show must be really desperate to get a plus size designer that they lost it.
I didn’t watch for a couple of seasons after Mondo lost to Gretchen, but after this I don’t think I’ll go back. Too much time invested in such dubious judge’s choices.
I’m sorry but feel like Ashley’s was the same outfit over and over. The teal dress was only one I liked. Feel like it was a slight predetermined “let’s reward the plus size designer”. Disappointed. Why didn’t they follow previous years in giving designers helpers for a day.
Candace boxed herself in with leather. I think that would be almost impossible to remake or alter on the fly.
