Questions about Lawrenceville

I don’t know much about what has happened since I graduated in 2023, but I was overall not impressed by what the school did post-2022 when I was still there. I can go into more detail privately, and there’s some older posts on my profile on this topic as well that may be helpful to you.

Agreed.

That’s pretty surprising, the athletic culture was very chill when I was there (even though many of my classmates would go on to play in college, including plenty of D1 athletes).

Do you (or does anyone else, maybe current parents) happen to know when revisit days are this year for the various schools? Do they tend to be on weekdays or Saturdays?

I’ve started a little tally for the schools to which our kiddo applied - last year someone was able to run an editable Wiki for people to add to as things came online, but I lack the permissions to do so.

They’re on weekdays, so kids can take in the class experience I think. Lville hasn’t announced their dates yet as far as I know; last year they were Fri April 5, and Mon April 8.

If anyone with permissions wants to start a wiki for this year’s dates, I’d be happy to add what I’ve collected so far!

Can you please share about the lifetime sports? What they are and how often they meet?

Is there a big difference in terms of time commitment for homework between 300, 400, and 500 level courses? Is the school pretty flexible in allowing 10th graders to take 400, 500 level courses if they have the prerequisites?

It looks like the choice will be made between Exeter and Lawrenceville. It’s a tough one.

Ruled out Andover.

Attend the revisit days they will answer a lot of questions for you

Depends on the class. There are definitely some 500s that are easier than some 400s (e.g. Precalc BC is harder than Calc AB), but for the most part, it’s pretty consistent. I’d say that in the humanities, you get longer readings as course numbers increase, while in STEM, the content itself gets more advanced.

Sophomores have to take 3 300 level classes (English, ICAPS (science), Forces (history)), as well as two trimesters of religion (Intro is 300, while the elective will typically be 400) and one trimester of art (usually 300). For math and foreign language, the class you take is fully based on placement; personally, I took 400 levels in both my sophomore year. It’s not uncommon to take 500 level math as a sophomore, though the school doesn’t like it when people try to use summer classes to accelerate their math progression.

Lifetime sports are very low-key intramural sports; for example, there’s lifetime skating, where you go and ice skate on the rink, and lifetime conditioning, where you go to the weight room. Some are not related to sports at all, like lifetime tech crew and Big Red Sports Network. They typically meet 3x a week for two hours. Here is the set of offerings from the spring of my senior year:

Go Big Red!

Thank you so much! Really appreciate it!

Can you please let me know where I can find a list of current clubs at Lawrenceville? Can’t find one in the school website.

There are tons (more than there there is time), but they change based on student interest and leadership. There will be a club fair with some teams and clubs represented at revisit day. So you can ask about them there. Also if there is something that you want but does not exist, you can create it - it is pretty easy to start a club.

Thank you!

@sgopal2 I wanted to check with you on the STEM program at lawrenceville. Can you let me know if we can have a quick call. My daughter got admission into lawrenceville and she is interested in biotech. I wanted to also know information on hutchins scholors program. What is the probability of getting into the that program?

Thank you for all the info @confusedaboutFA . I wanted some information on STEM programs at lawrenceville. My Daughter got admission into the school for the upcoming year. We wanted information on how hard it is to get into hutchins scholorship program and over-all how is the STEM courses at the school

They take something like 20 students per year; I’m not sure about how many apply, but the process is pretty involved (I believe there’s an interview and a couple of essays). That being said, most of the people I know who really wanted it, worked hard, and did well in their science classes seemed to get it.

The harder the class, the higher quality the teaching is; Math 3X / Precalculus BC / Calculus BC tend to have better teachers than Math 3 / Precalculus AB / Calculus AB, for instance. I was able to get a very strong foundation in STEM from my Lawrenceville education; I am now a STEM major in college, in fact.

Interesting, may I ask why?

I don’t agree with the statement regarding the teachers, My kid was in Maths 3x initially and moved to Maths 3 and has a great teacher.

Hi. My DS is STEM-focused, specifically mathematics. Can you tell me a bit more about the math classes at Lville and the quality of teaching and support of the math faculty? He was accepted to Lville and a few other NE schools and we are in the process of school selection. Thank for all of your invaluable input on these boards!
