Questions about Lawrenceville

This is great info. Thanks. Is the school generally supportive of students organizing events related to their respective clubs? Or is it more faculty driven/requiring approval of faculty?

Dm me happy to answer qus during this important decision.

Is the college results for the class of 2025 available anywhere?

College results are misleading since you don’t know who is hooked. This includes a very large number of Ivy legacy kids.

A big thank you to all who shared about their experiences and perspectives on Lawrenceville, especially Sroo and Confusedabout FA who took time to speak with me. We now have visited both Exeter and Lawrenceville, and are finishing up last minute research. Exeter and Lawrenceville are indeed very very different schools. We’ll see what our daughter decides in the next few days. Would love to hear from others who are also trying to decide between Exeter and Lawrenceville!

During our campus visit, there was strong bad smell in the campus, mostly likely from the nearby farm. Does this happen rarely?

Given that many schools are in rural settings, I think that this phenomenon is common across many schools. If I recall correctly Mercersburg, NMH, DA, Hotchkiss, etc. all have farms next to the schools.

I am curious how often the bad smell happen in the Lawrenceville campus..

If you have a son, and he gets accepted and attends, the odors from nature will be less offensive than the stink of his room.

How often would it need to happen for you to not want to spend $80K a year there?

If the school doesn’t smell good enough for you, then don’t apply. They’re not hurting for applicants or enrollments so far as I can tell.

haha, love your reply

My son attended Lville. I’ve been on the campus hundreds of times. Never once did I smell anything funky in the outside air.

There is a farm nearby (Big Red Farm) and I’m sure they probably use manure for fertilizer. But thats located nearly a mile away from the circle houses. So I doubt that is what was causing the issue.

Perhaps wind direction could have caused this. In any case, NJ has, really strict rules about how quickly fertilizer of any sort needs to be incorporated into the soil, and a pervasive smell would almost certainly be a violation.

thanks so much for the info!

Only time I recall campus being smelly was when they were redoing the mulch.

I am just getting a chance to visit the site again and was surprised to read this email. Truthfully, we’ve never noticed a bad smell on campus. The farm is actually a little bit of a walk away. I imagine it could happen, but not a complaint that I’ve ever heard before.

Quick question for current or alumni students and parents:

How significant is the difference between starting Math 3X versus Pre-Calculus B/C in 2nd Form at Lawrenceville, in terms of a student’s overall math trajectory?

From what I understand, beginning in Math 3X may limit access to the MA53X track later on. Does this have any meaningful impact when it comes to college applications?

For reference, I’m looking at this flowchart:

Ok - It really comes down to your students level of math 3x is for those that are exceptional in math but not taken algebra2 or are not as proficient as they could be. There is a lot of problem solving sets. Students go on to take AB or BC from this class. Precal AB or BC is again based on level of proficiency placing into the math level. Like any class anywhere the further along you are the better opportunity to reach higher levels. Many are surprised at the challenge and rigor in both 3x and in BC as the levels often do not equate to the work at local schools. Your child’s reports, grades, SSAT scores (or the like) and the school placement exam will help determine the level. In the case where you think you are not in the correct level, there is a chance to change classes. There are many gifted math students, but equally amazed at how many over estimate their application thinking vs. computation. Hope the helps.

Thank you for the detailed response. We’re trying to understand whether starting in Math 3X instead of Precalculus B/C would limit the advanced math courses a student can take in later years, and if that could have any impact on college applications.
