We also did not get an email, but a friend did, so we checked and the decision was there.
Here’s a list of impaction scores for 2024 in the Engineering Dept:

My son got an email tonight that he did not meet the admission impaction standard for applicants for CS. I am kind of confused. His CSU GPA is 4.23, and his math GPA for 10th and 11 grades is 4.33. We are CA residents but nonlocal. I would really appreciate it if someone explained to me how it works.
After reading some posts, I found out that CS is not an Engineering major, so they didn’t consider his math GPA.
For the SJSU CS impaction index, a 4.3 or higher CSU GPA is required. Correct, the Math GPA is not used since the CS major is found in the College of Science and not in Engineering.
Unfortunately, paying attention to details can make a difference.
unfortunately sjsu needs careful consideration of the impaction index to choose the first choice major. In hindsight he should have applied to software engineering.
it does not hurt to ask if they will reconsider him for software engineering though it is a long shot.
You are 100 percent right. We were so overwhelmed with so much information when he applied. We are waiting for UCs, and he likes Penn State more than SJSU. He was accepted into CS in University Park.
Sure. Penn St is a great school.
FYI if you are not aware.: Unlike the UCs and the Cal State’s, Penn St has secondary admission to CS/Engg Major after the first year.
Thanks, I didn’t know that. He also got accepted into CSUN, CSLB, master in CSUF, CPP, and ASU with a scholarship,
My husband went to Penn State for six years, so we are kind of biased toward it.
Sorry for asking too many questions. I calculated my son’s GPA for 10th and 11th grades. He has 24 As and 2 Bs. He has lots of honors and APs. I don’t understand why getting more A’s lowered his GPA. Thanks.
It is not the number of A’s that lowers the GPA, but the number of a-g course grades in total since the CSU GPA is capped at 8 semesters of Honors points. The more a-g courses taken over the minimum, the lower the calculated CSU GPA will become.
If he had 20 a-g classes with all A’s and 8 semesters of Honors points in the calculation, you get the maximum CSU GPA of 4.4.
From this point on , more grades = lower CSU GPA.
Also, the CSU’s expect students to take a-g courses beyond the minimum 15 to be competitive so you basically need all A’s to meet the Impaction index if the student is not in the local admission area (locals get a GPA bump).
