San Jose State Class of 2028 Official Thread

Thanks a lot; even my son’s counselor didn’t know that.

S24 offered admission for CS about 2 weeks ago.
CSU Capped Weighted GPA: 4.3
Local : Santa Clara County
Earned 5’s on both AP Comp Sci and AP Calc AB last year.
Waiting on the UCs before he makes his final decision.

A student with 35 a-g courses (24 is the goal bc is 6 classes for all 4 years) who makes “As” gets a CSU GPA 4.1 but fully weighted 4.6will likely do better at UCs and schools that take into consideration fully weighted GPA. It is frustrating to ultra high achieving students to be “punished” for doing more A-G class and lowering the csu GPA by capping the weighted portion. I am surprised your counselors didn’t know this, but even if they did they likely wouldn’t tell a top student to not take additional classes. That would be wrong as the goal is to learn not to take fewer classes.

A kid with 4.1 csu gpa and 35 a-g courses and making As in all of them is taking a far harder schedule than a student with 4.3 with 24 a-g courses who is also making all As) .

I suppose students need to know the rules of the game they are playing and aim for the rules of their targeted school.

I completely agree. I explained it to my son last night, and I saw how heartbroken he was. He told me that less than ten kids in his school had the same APs as him. We barely see him; he is always busy working and studying. He said if he knew, he would take fewer APs and focus more on his games and software developments. He wanted to take more math, so he took CC’s Art History course in the summer and studied the whole summer. He got an A plus, which lowered his GPA. That really doesn’t make any sense to me.

This situation is why I see many students apply for Software Engineering since the Math GPA is used for the Engineering impaction threshold. However, the Math GPA is another ? Since it does not spell out if it is weighted or unweighted and if 9-11th Math grades are used or 10-11th.

We found this issue a year ago when we were preparing my S24’s college list, and deciding wether or not to take more CC classes in summer. We contacted admissions office multiple times, but could not get an explanation as to why taking more classes (in high school) and doing perfect in them should put one at a disadvantage.

We did get clarification that CC classes will not affect/dilute CSU GPA. This is confirmed as my son still got a 4.33 CSU GPA after taking 3 CC courses on top of his 24 high school a-g courses, and he has been admitted to SJSU CS.

Wish your son will be awarded with other options for the work he put in.

Thank you so much for your kind words. When I calculated his GPA, I could see that it would drop by 0.02 after adding CC. 4.25>4.23. It is not much, but it still doesn’t make any sense.

Did sjsu allow for a second choice major?

Yes, they let you list an alternate major.

You must enter an alternate major on your application to SJSU. We will consider the alternate major for those applicants who did not meet the impaction threshold to their first choice major. We will only admit to alternate majors if there is additional capacity for new student enrollment in that major.

The second major is very restricted. Most engineering can’t be the second major.

Number of UC approved Honors/AP/IB or DE classes: 11 (semesters)
Intended Major: Mechanical Engineering

How difficult is it for a Local to get on-campus housing?

Congrats to everyone who’s already been accepted. My son’s admissions portal says “decision pending.” Is it a bad sign that he hasn’t heard yet? Do they send out acceptances before rejections? By when are all decisions sent out? Thanks for any tips.

@Gumbymom S24 got Deny/Eligible for reditection for SJSU CS. What should be the GPA for CS eligiblity in SJSU.

Can you please tell what is meant by Eligible for Redirection?Any info is helpful.

CSU GPA needed for CS is 4.30 or higher.

Redirection

If you are a CSU-eligible California resident who has been waitlisted or denied admission due to campus or program impaction, you may have the opportunity to be redirected to a non-impacted campus. The CSU will inform of you of available campuses via email.

is CSU GPA is same as UC GPA?

Any tool to calculate CSU GPA like Roger

Usually the Capped weighted UC GPA = CSU capped weighted GPA unless the student has Dual enrollment/CC courses since CSU’s calculate these differently than the UC’s for GPA purposes. Also SJSU has stated that they do not consider the DE/CC courses in their impaction index calculation since these courses go under the College coursework section. They use the calculated CSU GPA on the application based on HS courses.

I saw that SJSU sent out housing application today. My daughter hasn’t fully decided where she wants to attend yet but wondering if its better to pay the $50 non refundable fee and get in early for housing. Does anyone know if the $300 housing deposit is refundable if she decides to attend elsewhere?

I was wondering the same thing!

@dinalily

From the Housing FAQ:

You must notify University Housing Services in writing to cancel your License Agreement. If notification is received at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the fee period (the first day that the halls/apartments open),you will receive a full refund less the $100 license processing fee and the $50 non-refundable application fee .

Freshmen Impaction Results | Admissions lists a CS threshold of 3440, which is equivalent of a 4.30 GPA (3440 / 800) if the student has no bonus points for local area high school, etc…

Since SFSU and CSUEB are not impacted on the campus level or for the CS major, these may be among the campuses offered for redirection.
