A good friend of my S’s is going to AMDA in NYC next fall and she is really excited about it, though I’ve heard the same things you have. You do see AMDA in the theater programs from time to time, so I know that some of them work. I believe the girl in Orange Is the New Black who is the born again Christian (she gets offed in the last episode, can’t remember her name) went to AMDA.

Received letter from Pace today which informed us that D is an Alternate for both BFA Acting and BFA Film and TV. This is a relief, as Pace is her top choice school in NYC. Apparently this is akin to a priority wait list? Also wait listed at Muhlenberg, which is interesting as at her audition D was told that she was being admitted artistically, they wanted her to attend and would press the admissions office to let her in despite her less than stellar academics/test scores. Happy day!

@Jkellynh17, I think that’s Pennsatucky? @txdramamama, my daughter goes to Fordham and knows students who auditioned in theater, were accepted to the English major, and then reauditioned in the the fall. At least one who did that (there may be more) was accepted into the theater major the second time around.

Yes that’s it @GlassHarmonica.

@msdchick - Congrats on Pace! I’m glad she has two chances on the wait list.
Regarding Muhlenberg, just so it isn’t confusing for people in the future; at Muhlenberg you are admitted based on academics. The audition is for scholarship and yes the theatre department may press admissions to accept a student with less than average scores after they see a good audition. But you don’t have to be accepted artistically. You get in on academics and then declare theatre as your major. :-)

Thanks for clarifying @dramamom0804. Yes, was aware this is the case.:)

@jkellynh17 No, Pennastucky (played by Taryn Manning) didn’t go to AMDA. However, the blonde drug addicted lesbian (Spoiler Alert! The girl who “hanged” herself, but not really.) did.

Oh, okay, sorry. I thought I read that on one of these boards, but maybe I had the two actresses confused. I do know that Crazy Eyes went to Julliard, because she did one of those NYT Mag interviews and the person asked her about it. (Also she slips some pretty serious Shakespeare into one of the episodes.) Thanks @hopenest, I do seem to need a factchecker these days.

I just heard that NYU is emailing all decisions on March 28, ahead of the April 1st date they had promised before. It’s on their admissions blog, so I believe we can count on it. :-)

Quite a few BFA graduates on OTNB.

The sweet correctional officer-Emerson

The disgustingly mean officer- CMU, Fun Fact: he’s Leiv Schrieber half-brother!

Bald Inmate named ‘Poussey’- Juilliard

Tastee, ‘Poussey’ BFF- Juilliard

Parker, the lead- Fordham

Red, the cook- NYU but dropped out

And Red teaches at Fordham.

My D received her acceptance to Point Park BA Acting with a large talent scholarship. I haven’t seen any discussion of PPU in the acting (not MT) forum this year. Not sure what to make of it.

After an exhausting audition process, and the obligatory 2 months of waiting, I’ve received 5 rousing "no"s for schools I auditioned for. FINALLY, today I received news that I am an alternate for Pace’s BA Acting program which I believe means I have a decent chance of eventually being accepted. It was one of my favorite auditions by far, but I’m almost certain that there’s no way for me to make the financial aid work.
I’m still waiting on NYU and Marymount Manhattan. Don’t know where I’m going with this, it’s just been quite the emotional roller coaster…

I just wanted to say a few words to all that feel sad or rejected right now. My S and I went to a wonderful theater festival in Lousiville this past weekend. We saw many plays and had a fantastic time. These are new American Playwrights that are hoping to get their plays off the ground. Many plays on Broadway started here. The talent that was represented in the plays was astounding. Actors from Broadway to HBO and beyond. I happened to look at the Bio’s of all of the actors as I was watching a play that was a tad tedious… the lead was a recent gradutae of CMU though and truly extraordinary. Anyway… the bio’s of the Acting Co were eye opening. SOOOO many difffernt schoolls, and almost non were top programs, and also A LOT of BA’s in theater. Now, there were a lot of prestigious MFA degrees. This is good news I think, because what that means is that you go ANYWHERE and major in theater, work hard, rise to the top, and go from there. In fact, it might be easier to stand out at a more unknown program. I know that the two guys who own SouthPark and produced Book of Mormon met each other at U Colorado. So spend a few days to grieve, but get back on that horse… sometimes it’s the closed doors that steer you in a diffetrent direction where you will find the prize

I have missed so many posts. So sorry for all of the rejections and congrats in the new acceptances. I would just like to share a happy ending. My son spent the day at Michigan yesterday for their admitted student day. It was fantastic! He got to sit in on two classes, have lunch with current students and watch a full run rehearsal of the current production. He was totally blown away and is committing even though he has yet to hear from 3 BFA programs . They also said that 12 of their 16 graduates were cast by casting agents at the end of their senior year. Everything about the program felt right for him. I can now say thank you to all of the other BFA programs who did not accept him. This is where he belongs. I hope that all of you have a similar experience. Please don’t discount the smaller less well known programs or the BA programs. If you are talented, passionate and work hard you can be successful anywhere. After all of the rejections over the past week, I am so happy that he is thrilled about his choice. Thank you to U of M for seeing potential in him and giving him this opportunity. Now to figure out how to pay for it :)

@annelisesmom, Point Park is a very solid program where your daughter can get good training. and @compadv, that’s fantastic. One of my old running buddies is a pianist who was recently doing a workshop/tryout for a show and he could not stop talking about how fantastic the Michigan kids were. (He went to Julliard, so…)

compadv - congrats - I sent you a PM. Happy to answer any Umich questions.

Sunnyakela - My younger daughter is currently a Sophomore at Knox College and I think it’s one of the most amazing schools I’ve ever seen/heard about/experienced. It’s filled with incredibly creative and quirky kids and has an incredible amount of opportunities for interested kids. As an undecided major my daughter has, in the theatre department, already performed in 3 plays (her fourth is this Spring term), directed a one act play, and worked on costumes, makeup and wigs. The professors are from well respected programs and, I think, have chosen to raise their kids in a small (somewhat depressed) town. That’s not including the Improv Club that she is on the board of. My friend whose kid is the same age and a theatre kid at NYU is jealous when I tell her of all the opportunities and experiences my daughter has had.

They also have a great theatre travel abroad program and the Rep Term every two or three years where a group of students whole term is to be part of a production from start to finish. Very unusual and rare.

Depending on where you live it can be difficult to get to though. If you have any more questions feel free to contact me. Good luck!

@annelisesmom, my son was accepted to Point Park last year and we looked very seriously at it, it is indeed a very solid and wonderful program. The reason my S did not choose it was because you have to audition for the BFA after your first or second year (cannot remember anymore) and wanted a program that did not involve cuts or second auditions.

My former student who went to a small state school and got her BA not only was admitted to Yale for her MFA but just got word she got into NYU and Juilliard . Good news for my daughter who got her 7th rejection yesterday (Fordham). Her validation will not come from getting into a BFA program. She will hone her craft elsewhere and hope her time will come.
