Singaporean connection

^ Wait, how do you check if your package has been sent? I thought tracking of application materials for Columbia doesn’t start until November 10-ish?

And in those schools that they go to, I doubt teachers care about tattoos. =p

do you guys know where are the branches or offices of DHL/Fedex/UPS?

Yeah it does not start until nov.10 but you can go online to singpost’s website and check. for me it says Singapore-JFK post dispatched. takes 10 days but it will satiate the inner kiasuness. btw are u applying ed to seas or cc? and yeah damn it ib in 2 weeks.

According to Statistics Singapore, about 1 in every 1,000 unmarried resident males (and 3.5 per 1000 females) will marry between the ages of 15-19 every year. Of course, they may also only enlist at 20, 21 or even later, due to circumstances.

Who said they have to go to school anyway? Compulsory education only lasts 6 years in Singapore. I am not sure the teachers bother at the schools they attend though.

Well, taking drugs is illegal in Singapore and subject to harsh punishment - that never really stopped the drug addicts from doing so anyway.

I think you will really be very surprised when you go in. Better hope that you enlist earlier rather than later. The earlier PES C batch (Jan/Feb) is mostly JC students, but the later one (Apr) is really mixed.

themerlion: But you need item numbers to check via SingPost’s website, right? Haha I think I forgot them oops. Or didn’t register my mail in the first place. Why in the world would tracking only begin on November 10, which is past the ED deadline? I’m applying to SEAS btw. Ooh good luck for IB! You’re from ACS(I)? I remember this time last year. My first paper was Physics HL on November 4th. Ah but it’ll all be over before you know it! Excited to see the English paper this year.

You have much to learn in NS… Singapore only seems to nice and sparkling to you because you managed to float to the top strata of a society segregated by education policy. As a nation, we are very good at sweeping the uglier parts of society into invisible corners to fester in silence. In many neighbourhood schools, gangsterism is rife and teachers are powerless. “Teachers getting mad” is only a deterrent to students who actually give a damn.

There are teens in NS who are the sore providers for their families. There are many, many people with tattoos, some of them with histories in gangs. You may or may not meet these people because, even in NS, the system has been designed for maximum segregation between the different social classes.

But no matter what, you are in for unpleasant times (though not necessarily physical harm) if you try to pull the “I am from a top school and therefore I am better than you” crap.

themerlion: JCX is absolutely spot on - there are so many faces of Singapore that you haven’t had the chance to see due to your privileged education. For example I met a 20yo chinese guy who married a malay girl, rides his motorbike to “work” everyday, has tattoos all over his body and will become a father soon. Unbelievable? Better be mentally prepared for army.

oh ****. well actually i grew up in a nsk primary school. so i was in touch with reality. then i lost it all after 6 years here. yeah i am mentally preparing myself. i have tried to buy food from a hawker center, erm then try and eat there, practice singlish a little more haha. anyway i feel i need ns to be more singaporean. i voluntarily choose to go through this culture shock lol.

Eh, do I need to submit my International Student Certification of Finances to the school with my app? I can just send it to them later right? I just realised I need it and I’m rushing for ED so I hope to just send them after I fill it in, because it requires the bank’s authorization etc.

You should ask the school. Most schools won’t require it at the time of application unless you’re applying for financial aid

in the commonapp, there’s some questions i dont understand

-what is a fulltime student?
-do you intend to enroll in a degree program your first year???
-other citizenship (visa type???) what is the type of visa?
-list all the PAID jobs? so our school-organized workshadowing is not counted?

Urgh, okay, another question: When they ask for official transcript, is it fine to photocopy and get it verified at the school admin? Or do I have to ask the school admin to send the transcripts?

sputnikmuffin: my school has a system in which everyone goes to the college recept & they will upload the pdf for you? but for me i’m doing it by snail mail so i would suppose my teachers’d have to send it in?

i’m not that sure though!

Hmm thanks.
I’m doing it by snail mail too  I thought it would be alright to just photocopy and get the school admin to use the stamp to verify its authencity, and send it off with all my other forms.

Photocopy + stamp is fine. It’s the recommended method for RJC.

what about for private GCE-O level candidates ?? i don’t really have a school to get it stamped at…

^ Go to a notary public (they will charge you a handling fee though) - [Singapore Academy of Law: Legal Industry - Notaries Public Directory](http://www.sal.org.sg/Content/LegalIndustry/appt_np_dir.aspx)

lemme ask you guys something, how is this gonna look on my app ??

took english + a couple of other subs last year. got an A2 for english and Cs and Ds for the rest

taking the other subs again this year and i’m pretty sure i’ll do better this time around. but since i’m having to submit both certs (coz i’m using last year’s english score), do i have to explain why? i’ve been in a private sch since PSLE, ain’t as easy as it looks to score lol, especially for practicals.

how do schools actually look at such things ?? this year i think i should be getting A2-B3/B4 for all the 5 subs that i’m taking. definitely not applying for top 50 unis, but anything after that should be fair game, according to a friend

tyvm

A2-B3-B4 actually u can try for top 50, for eg, im sure with As and Bs, schools like rice, emory, vanderbilt would be worth a shot while schools like georgia tech, UCs and UT Austin would also be possible.

O level subjects dude. i’m 100% sure with just O levels i don’t have a shot in the top 50.
