Yes. Getting into Columbia Engineering is easier than getting into Columbia College. I had my interview in early January actually, quite soon after I submitted my application.

my columbia interviewer was a grouchy middle-aged lawyer who was probably just tired after a day’s work. :)

Screwitlah: thanks for the comments. Very helpful. Though I don’t quite understand the post on SEAS FA office. I am considering applying to SEAS only, not both colleges with different family contribution. How would it cause any concern over playing the system?

But is it advisable to demonstrate different needs to different schools? Anyway my parents are willing to pay 30-40K a year, is that considered as a lot of “needs”?

Also, did you apply to need-sensitive schools with no aid? How did they go?

thanks a lot

i meant that SEAS and columbia college share the same financial aid office and financial aid policy, so your financial need affects your chances to the same extent for either school. as long as you base your choice of columbia school on which one is “easier” to get in instead of actual interest, you’ll be viewed as gaming the system, but i personally have nothing against that.

it is possible to demonstrate different needs, but why would you wanna do that? you’re desperate to get in anyway, so i don’t see why you’d demonstrate a higher need than the minimum for any school at all.

assuming the total cost per year is 50k, this means your need is 10-20k a year. 10k is probably on the low side , but 20k is a big jump. you might want to post more threads about this in the financial aid and international forums.

i applied to 6 or 7 need-aware schools with quite alot of financial need and got rejected by almost all and waitlisted by one.

I c. But I am more of a engineering student. at least that is what is shown on the resume. :stuck_out_tongue:
But I just realize SEAS requires rec letter by Maths teacher… I think it’s a bit late to ask him for rec letter… and we are not that close…

as for demonstrating diff need. that’s just for need-blind schools.

Anyone hereee?

I’m hereee!

Other than Cornell, what other schools have Guaranteed Transfer

^ I am not sure the guaranteed transfer program is available for international students. They are only given to a handful of candidates applying for CALS, HumEc or ILR anyway, I think.

Anyone here from RJC? I’ve taken a look at their CommonApps stats and it’s amazing. Where can i take a look at some of the profiles of their students applying to US universities?

what’s commonapps stats?

^^
sry i meant this USapps :o

Is that one of my fellow IRC’ers on that web page? I recognise her! ;)

Valour - traditionally 2200+ SATs with ~2400 SAT subject tests I guess.

nobody posts profiles of those students, valour. you can get a good idea of the difficulty from reading the chance threads

omg, im not around for soooo long and the threads grown to a 100+…

fiona_: oi! what u mean by j4 sia…ALL guys who go ns all oso j4 sia…lol…okok jking here…

regarding the thrown in all apps for ‘need blind’ institutions, its not easy to det whether the uni really is ‘need blind’. after all, cornell did state ‘need blind’ but seniors (fiona, screw) said otherwise so best to ask the experienced…

edit: after scanning the thread given a few pages back, can someone pls enlighten me on whether Northwestern is considered one of the better unis too? seems like everyone speaks of its rival (UChicago) instead…

Cornell need-blind, perhaps to domestic applicants?

Lol I don’t get the j4 thing.

haha…someone asked abt who was gg where regarding the posters in this thread and u replied with names and their destinations…for me, it was j4 sob sob…aahhh nvm…was just teasing anyways…

btw, mind replying to my query on NU?

I don’t know the details but Northwestern is very respected, and a first choice for many.
