Was it fairly generous based on need? How is their rep as far as need based aid goes, generally?

Hopefully you ran the net price calculator before applying ED2. This is direct from the SMU website:

Financial Aid Notifications for the 2025-2026 Academic Year

  • New incoming & transfer undergraduate students: Admitted Early Decision 1 (ED1) students will start to receive aid offers in December 2024. Admitted Early Action students will start to receive aid offers in January 2025. Admitted Early Decision 2 (ED2) and Regular Decision students will begin to receive aid offers in late February/early March 2025. New transfer students for fall 2025 will begin to receive financial aid offers in late April 2025.

Im pretty sure my husband did. I was just wondering if they generally have a rep as generous with need based. Tulane for ex has a rep as being very generous.

Has anyone seen anything in their financial aid or acceptance letters about Discovery Scholarships yet?

Admitted EA and according to the above, says will start to receive aid offers in January 2025, now it is Mid-Feb & still no offer.

Has your child checked their my.smu account? We received our FA package like a month ago but you have to view it there. Accepted EA.

Yes, We check it daily. We haven’t heard anything. Another poster ntuyen1945 above also said they haven’t received their EA aid either. Did you receive aid outside of merit? Please share if you would be so kind.

Yes my daughter got the Discovery. Has anyone heard on Embrey or Lyle engineering scholarships?

Yes, he received a FA grant as well as merit. I’m not with him so I can’t remember the details but it’s been several weeks.

Congrats!

Have you gotten the impression that when it comes to need based aid that they are fairly generous? I know private schools are more expensive but so far the state schools we’ve gotten packages from haven’t been incredibly so. Wondering if applying thru the css allows for a bigger allocation of funds. I’ve heard Tulane is very generous for ex.

They were generous to us. We weren’t expecting anything after merit aid. It wasn’t a huge grant but we’re grateful as we have another child in a private college as well.

It was. Provost $30K, Distinguished $10K, Opportunities 5K. Lyle Engineering will be out in March (I emailed them). If your kid is a NMSF s/he will get additional $5k and if s/he is IB student $7500? I think. At least it was last year for my other kid.

My kid got Provost. We are very appreciative, but trying to figure out if we can swing it. Kid is in Dedman. Are there any more chances for scholarships or is what we were offered final? Not trying to be greedy, but just not seeing a ton of info online.

They have merit based scholarships and needs based grants. If you ran the NPC, which you should have if you applied ED, then you should have a pretty close idea as to what they will offer you. But since you applied ED you will be committed to attending unless their offer greatly differs from what the NPC says.

My student sent an email to the Admissions officer and he advised waiting until the beginning of March!

Were you also required for the financial verification?

Thanks! When did she hear on Discovery? I know this sounds silly but my DS hasn’t received any merit aid yet while Baylor offered him $50K. Would you mind sharing your daughter’s stats? Just trying to figure out if this class was just superbly competitive or maybe he just hasn’t heard back yet

My son didn’t receive any aid at all, so we are full pay, he has a 3.7, I guess I wasn’t thinking we would qualify for any merit, but did anyone with a 3.7 qualify for any merit? We don’t qualify for any need based, but the 92K/year is hard to justify
he is in at Cox, and it’s his top choice
I guess I was just hoping for something, ugh.
