@IT22379
We toured TTU and loved the campus. It’s is beautiful and the southwestern architecture is really nice. It’s quite a drive depending on where you live. I really liked the feeling of all the people and students there. Just nice down to earth people.
@tdawns Thanks we are about 6 hours from Lubbock which is not bad.
@aggiedreamin @tdawns @IT22379 It’s not a scenic drive - I remember counting the tumbleweeds and the nice cop who let me off without a ticket.
@AggieDreamin , I wish there was a PM option here so I wasn’t cluttering up the thread. I’ll make it brief: We toured UofH, UTPB, TTU, SHSU, UTD, TxState, and A&M. We went to THREE of the TTU Raider Road Shows in addition to the campus tour, trying to find a major he liked as well as he liked the school and the people. TTU is absolutely unparalleled in selling themselves to parents. No other college has the “we will take care of your fledgling adult” message like TTU has. My timid only child ate that up! If TTU offered Recreation, Parks & Tourism (or anything even close) we would have stopped everything and sent our kid to Lubbock, no questions asked. My kid is sitting on a TTU admission and qualified for a nice little automatic scholarship, but it’s for a major he isn’t really all that interested in pursuing. So here we sit, waiting on A&M.
My son was offered PSA last year and instead accepted his offer from TTU. He was accepted into the TTU Honors College which has been an amazing experience in itself. I was concerned about the drive but it’s not been a big deal. Flights on Southwest are not expensive, Tech has shuttle buses for all the breaks/holiday to all major cities. He has made wonderful friends and could not be happier. The staff and faculty are incredible. I am also impressed by the great support I have found with the parent network. Good luck regardless of decision but don’t let the distance be a factor!
@IT22379 @AggieDreamin @JaceyK
It took us 5 hours. And yes the trip is awful. We didn’t have cell service for some of it and I was scared to death we’d break down and leatherface would show up! ?
They did do a great job of selling to parents. @AggieDreamin I get the feeling after reading a lot of your posts that we might live in the same town. Are you an Eagles fan by chance?
@daleNchip TTU wasn’t really on our radar but with us getting capped at UT and now the uncertainty of TAMU we decided to apply although we missed the scholarship deadline hopefully we get a pretty good financial aid package for my son and then apply for scholarships next year.

@mrsqster !!!
?️? ???
@tdawns @mrsqster wow…lots of locals!!! A-up (or used to be) Small world
@IT22379 you too??
@tdawns @daleNchip I PM’d both of you.
Liberal Arts is not the largest population for incoming freshman nor is it the largest college population on campus.Liberal Arts runs about half of what Engineering is.
For fall 2018,
Liberal Arts received 4,292 applications, 2,401 admitted and 994 enrolled .
Mays received 3,977 applications, 1,902 admitted and 1,025 enrolled.
Engineering received 10,519 applications, 8,939 admitted and 4006 enrolled.
https://dars.tamu.edu/Student/files/Apply-Admit-Enroll-Sum-All-Fa18-incl-Galveston.aspx
Currently, there are 7,058 Liberal Arts full time undergraduate students as of fall 2018, 14,396 in Engineering https://dars.tamu.edu/Student/Enrollment-Profile
Majors listed on the college application has no bearing on admissions at A&M.
Applicants list majors on their applications because some universities, like U.T. holistically review each applicant for the major.
A&M does not holistically review any applicant for any major except for Engineering with Review Applicants being reviewed for admissions to the university AND admissions to the engineering major.
For Review Applicants, A&M only holistically reviews them for admission to the university only.
If a review applicant is admitted, only then do they look at their major and they are placed into it. If the major is not open, the applicant is placed in their second choice major. If it too is closed, they are asked to chose an open major.
A&M also does not wait for offers of decisions to be declined and then more are offered to review applicants. There is a whole thread on TexAgs, where John Cochran, an Admissions Officer at A&M, posts answers to questions regarding admissions. He has stated this on many occasions. It is a comforting thought if it did happen this way, but it doesn’t.
@Manny009 All of the predictions of offers of admissions is based on following the trends of the past 3 admissions cycles and then the reports that come out late fall. We have a few folks that have run the breakdowns from pulling together many of the DARS reports. That doesn’t mean they can’t always switch it up this cycle because we saw two new admissions thingy’s this cycle, with an early October full admissions release for a small number of Review Applicants (usually late Nov, Early Dec) and 3 options given for engineering admissions to Galveston or 1 of 2 Engineering Academies.
There is always a chance, as no one sees the complete application file besides admissions.
@BlueBayouAZ did a lot of number crunching from the official dars reports on the percentage for review admits to get full admissions.I pasted it into my notes. I’ll retrieve it when I return home if she doesn’t see this beforehand.
For all of you have kids considering TTU. If your children have visited the campus and like the feel - I would say go for it. I wish it had my daughter’s major - I would be pushing her that way.
When I graduated from college - a dream job did not jump out at me. And my parents were willing to pay for graduate school. So I applied to TTU - sight unseen (I had already been accepted to a smaller state school in LA). I packed up boxes and had them shipped to my dorm in Lubbock and flew there with the three allowed suitcases. I landed there not knowing a soul and never even toured the campus. Had to take a cab from the airport. I’m not even sure I talked with anyone from the school.
My parents (Daddy a Longhorn) were like “Have you seen Lubbock? We will pay but are you REALLY sure that is what you want to do?”
I loved it there. People are friendly - and much like TAMU it is very much a city focused on the college. In a way that Austin is not. I lived on campus (parents did not let me drive there) without a car for my first year. It was surprisingly easy to do.
My high school BFF’s daughter is a sophomore there now. She was admitted to UT but they were not giving her enough scholarship $$$. On Good Friday her senior year - they made a quick trip to TTU. The folks at TTU were actively trying to get her to come - including serious scholarship money. She went there to rule it out. Ended up loving it and I believe she will not have any student loans when she is done - something that she could not say about UT.
I will add something to further what @Thelma2 is saying about the stats. Folks reporting on here are such a small sample size and they are self reported so it is very hard to judge the accuracy.
However looking at last year the breakdown of Full Admit, other pathway, and PSA on last years CC thread- it was surprisingly close to the breakdown reported by admissions. Though the breakdown of TEAM/Gateway inside the “other pathway” category was a not as representative as I would have liked, overall things seemed to shake out the same.
Non-scientific sample
41 Full
19 TEAM
10 Gateway
4 McAllen
77 - PSA
Total of 151
41 Full - 27%
33 - Alternative 21%
77 - PSA - 51%
48% - Some sort of admission or pathway
51% - PSA
Data released by TAMU regarding review candidates shows
40.7% - Some sort of admission of pathway
59.2% - PSA
So while off - for as small of a sample - I think it trends pretty close to the actual numbers. From looking at your reporting - It appears Gateway is over represented or TEAM is under represented. We know that the Gateway offers are well under 1000 and TEAM is over 4000. But in the sample it 10 and 19.
@kkskkw Wow, that is unusual. Perhaps they have changed their minds on that and not updated their web pages to reflect that. In past cycles, they have not been admitted. The website under alternative admissions decisions states: Texas A&M University Blinn Team Program is a collaborative admission program between Texas A&M University and Blinn College. Students are co-enrolled at both institutions. Due to coursework limitations, students with more than 40 hours of college credit are not eligible to participate in TEAM.

@mrsqster Yes! We are in Katy.
I have been lurking on the thread since my DS applied to TAMU in September. He goes to a highly competitive high school and is still on review. (2Q;3.87 unweighted GPA; 29 ACT; 1280 SAT; lots of ECs; drumline captain; mission trips; works 18 hours per week)
He applied to and was admitted at: Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Texas State, OU, and Ole Miss. My DD is a senior engineering major at Oklahoma State and has had an amazing experience. She will be going to work for a major company in June and has had 2 incredible internships. For those of you considering OSU, it’s a fantastic school! I am kind of sad that DS isn’t going to Stillwater!
We felt all along that he would probably be Blinn TEAMed, but to make a very long story short, he has decided to attend Texas Tech. He loved the the campus, the people, and feels like Tech is home. He feels like Tech “wants” him. I am glad that we Plans B,C, and D.
Good luck to everyone! Maybe we will see some of you at Tech!
@Stimmer64 Thanks for your post! My daughter’s plan B is Texas Tech. She has applied to the Honors college and eagerly awaits whether she will get in or not. Our son is at A&M and he loves it, but we almost think Tech is a better fit for her. I guess now is just a waiting game!
I thought I would post to add to your stats because my son was one of the review admits hearing back in Oct.
When did you apply: 7/31
When did you get your UIN: 8/3
When did you receive your admission decision: 10/11
Are you an Auto-admit or Academic Admit or Review Admit: Review Admit
Major/College of Choice: Mays Business
Class Rank: 1st Quarter
ACT: 31 (M 29 E 25 R 35 S 33)
EC: Community service, NHS, Leadership, Sports, Work Experience
LOR: 1
We are thrilled to have an Aggie and experience CStat and all of the traditions. But, I want to add to the TTU fan club. I have two there and it has been a great college experience. Literally the NICEST people you will ever meet! The town revolves around the school. They do an outstanding job at all programs for prospective students and orientation. Parents, you will leave feeling like you really know what’s going on. And I think it’s so important to look at the placement rates for employment and grad school after college, because isn’t that why we are sending our kids to school?? TTU has great statistics.I will have kids at both schools next year (3 in college, ouch!) and I know they will graduate having had an equally awesome time.
@boymom333 Thank You for posting.
