Honestly, I don’t want to give up hope either, but I’m just feeling so defeated. If I don’t get into A&M this year it’s likely I’ll never be able to get in.
Ugh. One of my amazing students apparently got a flat out denial this morning. 1300 SAT, 25 ACT, tons of EC’s, she feels her LORs were good. 27%. CR. Thought for sure she’d at least get PSA and was finally embracing that idea. So many of us have heard that the majority of denials are due to incomplete apps. Naturally, her Mom called admissions this morning to triple check and see what went wrong. Admissions confirmed everything in her app was complete and accurate. They told her that this is the first year that they’ve had to send out more denials than usual due to the record volume of applications. I’m thoroughly shocked. She’s considering appealing, her family bleeds maroon. I have no idea how that will go considering the wording on their website seems pretty clear that appeals aren’t commonly very successful, and she truly does not have any special circumstances to warrant it. My daughter is still in review. I hope they at least offer her PSA. She would likely do straight Blinn instead, but I think it would be less crushing than flat out rejection. Was not expecting good students to be denied and given no pathway ??

@tdawns I don’t know how to DM. My oldest got her BSN and now her MSN from TXState, but that was the only option she would ever consider. She has always loved the campus and I attended there before marrying my husband. Their dad and I both graduated from TX A&M Corpus Christi because that’s where we were stationed when we got married. Our youngest only applied to Texas A&M because it was her dream before she even visited her junior year. Oldest graduated hs a year early and attended 3 different high schools because of military moves; she did 1 year of cc in VA and then transferred in. She loves that school, but was not happy that nursing was moved to Round Rock with no housing; commuting for school while working as a CNA and living in San Marcos was exhausting. The youngest thought about Texas State if she got a denial from A&M, but said in the end she would do cc here in VA then apply as a transfer. She should be classified as a sophomore Spring 2020. Definitely check it out!
Well this kinda sucks but I got an email from the assistant director of admission and said all full admissions and Blinn have been released, and that we will most likely get PSA or Gateway because that is what is available. For mathematics it will be PSA. They said space was limited this year and they could not fit everyone. Oh Well it is what it is but I would like to say thanks to everyone here in the forum for all their suggestions and answers and it helped a lot going through this process… Good Luck to everyone.
@Thelma2 Just thinking out loud/asking as you seem so knowledgable about all things TAMU ! - Could a denial response to a freshman application impact a subsequent transfer application no matter what route you go? I guess what I’m really trying to ask is… does the applicant have to indicate the outcome of any previous applications on a transfer application or are they stand alone with no cross referencing. We still await a decision outcome. My son’s Plan B/C/D currently include alternate pathways into CS but sprinkled with realism.
@52AG82 she said she applied some time in October. I’m extremely blown away. I was mentally preparing myself for being sad for my daughter if she received a PSA decision, to be honest, I really wasn’t too worried for her possibly getting a flat out denial… now I’m panicking at the thought of her reaction should this be the case for her. We already figured full admit was no longer on the table, but we definitely didn’t mentally prepare for a rejection. I hope none of us have to deal with THAT news ? aside from my daughter, if I had to guess which applicant at our school would be denied, this girl wouldn’t have even crossed my mind as a remote possibility. Definitely making me very nervous and wishing we could just be done with the process.

I think TAMU mainly looks at test scores when assigning academy offers. I was in the 2nd quarter, but with a 1400 SAT and I got Blinn-Bryan engineering academy. I think they should switch this however, and look at class rank instead because it shows more long term results. I am still shocked at the amount of 1st quarter applicants still waiting. TAMU needs to change their admissions process.

@luckyaggie why do you say that if you don’t get into A&M this year, you probably never will? If your heart is truly set on being an Aggie, transferring is a real option. I know that you are feeling discouraged now but you may discover a path that is perfect for you. So many times, we look back and see that the way that things happened were a blessing and not the disaster that we thought they were at the time. You have not been denied yet and if you really want to graduate from A&M, you will find a way.
@tdawns I also can’t direct message. My older son chose Texas State after receiving a Blinn team offer in 2017. Texas State offered him $5,000 per year in assured scholarships (https://www.finaid.txstate.edu/scholarships/freshman/assured.html) and admittance into the honors college. He loves the campus and the area but felt “lesser than” during his first semester as most of his friends were at their first choice schools. He spent most weekends in Austin or College Station. He achieved a 4.0 his freshmen year and applied to business school at UT and TAMU. He was not accepted. As many have said, transfer admission into business at either school is difficult, to say the least. That being said, he found his people during the spring semester of his freshmen year and was actually unsure whether he would leave if accepted to either school. He remains happy. His only complaint is the lack of a competitive sports program.
@2xAggieMom It’s a very complicated situation. I’m an early college student, and I want to get into Biomedical Science. I will have 60 credits by the end of this spring, and the cap for transferring into BIMS is 75. However, BIMS requires 45 credits of chemistry courses, physics, calculus, and biology. I only have Biology, and if I add those other credits on top of my 60 I will not be eligible for transfer. It’s a bad day.
@Scotsfi When applying as a transfer, you start fresh. They hold no earlier decision for or against you. It’s all based on what you are bringing to the table as a college student, not high school. They will look at DC gpa, but that’s it from HS. No test scores. They have your HS transcript, but I don’t believe you provide test scores (or my daughter would never have been able to transfer, lol).
@nervoustamumommy - Here is what I plan as support for my daughter if she gets denied or PSA - which is more likely with each passing hour.
1- This is not a reflection on you or the effort you put in to your high school career. Your rank/GPA/Test scores assure automatic admission into all but two public schools in the state of Texas. That is an amazing achievement. You have been accepted to a school that actually has higher average test scores than TAMU (UTD). You have out of state schools offering you the equivalent of in state tuition and mailing and emailing you almost daily. You are the type of student schools want. TAMU had a record number of people apply this year and unfortunately they are also trying to reduce the size of the freshman class.
- While you may be focused on one school - other schools have a lot to offer. You will be surprised at how you find a home if you allow yourself to be open. You can always follow the PTA guidelines - but I strongly encourage you to also keep an open mind about finding a home and staying at the university you start at. Sometimes a smaller pond is a better place to swim.
