My eldest is at Galveston as a MART major and is going to graduate in August (almost a full year early). It fit him really well. The biggest difference is the amount of activities outside of school which are very limited compared to CS. Still a lot of fun stuff to do but just not nearly the variety. He loved the smaller classes and the atmosphere put him in a business mindset where he took really heavy courseloads (3 times over 20 hours) and really didn’t have a problem keeping up. He also loved the ticket pull, he didn’t have to stand in any line and got first row, 3rd Deck for the Texas game this year and the Bama game last year.
The kids who generally don’t like it are those who are most interested in wanting to do things out of class. Greek life. The Corps. Northgate and college social life. Going to tons of sporting events. Doing lots of intramurals. They have some of that in Galveston but much less. Taking Freshman classes with 300 plus vs 50 or less though is a really nice advantage as is having profs that are much more approachable because they aren’t dealing with so many students. Galveeston also has far fewer of the ultra competitive kids that CS has who are basically just retaking their Senior year of HS because they need to pad their GPA for ETAM or other reasons and is just less intimidating. I know I talked to several parents and kids from Freshman year and my son had a far less stressful experience than CS and that made it more fun for him, he didn’t feel like he was pulled in 100 directions and had plenty of time to focus and study and he was in the Corps in Galveston (which is very different than CS).
It’s all about what fits the kid, 75k students is a lot.
If your children only end up completing the undergrad, it is fine if you study the first two years in another college (any college, not only in TAMU systems) and transfer to TAMU for last two years. But if they decide to pursue professional degrees post graduate such as medical field, I personally think that the straight 4 years at TAMU will have better image for the admission committee.
My son was trying to register for the MPE but it’s not available yet, it still lists Fall 2024. When will it become available, or they will be an email notification? TIA!
My son applied back in September for Construction Science. I have read that this is a small major and if he is accepted, I don’t think he will get in until late February or March because his chances seems like a 50/50 for admission to me. Are there any other majors that are similar to construction science that may not be full? I am not sure if starting in one major and transferring will be much of an option for him because he is graduating from an early college high school with his associates.
Next to positive University Studies degree is gone-except for those that had already started.
In the big restructure of majors/colleges, University Studies was cut, morphed. @FriscoDad & @Christi1993 am I dreaming this?
This is where an Associates Degree is definitely going to be a problem, if student doesn’t get into Construction Science. You can look at the degree plan, but they don’t allow >60 hours.
