[Student Visas (F-1 & M-1) - U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Pakistan](http://islamabad.usembassy.gov/pakistan/niv_student_visas.html)

Firstly, the US embassy recommends all F-1 student visa applicants to apply atleast 120 days in advance of the program start date or as soon as you get the I-20 form. Students must come prepared to answer why they want to attend a particular school, do they have sufficient funds to cover the entire cost of attendence (all 4 years, or whatever applies to you) and your future plans (to mave back to your own country or ANYWHERE other than the US).

I guess almost everyone here is familiar with there things, its just the entire cost issue that struck me. Well, the immigration officers explained this in detail. It works like this, you need to show sufficient funds in the bank statement (obviously), you can also show that as the family income is,for xample 40k/year, I’ll have sufficient funds to cover the costs.

Some common concerns …

“can we get dual student visa on single passport?”

Yes, surprisingly, we can! The process is, you apply to both countries separately, so US are least concerned about UK people. As long as you pay there visa fee, go through their visa process, keep your story straight.

“if we need to go for cancellation of first visa, how much time does the embassy take?”

There is no such thing as cancellation of a visa! There is something called “closing your file”. Its really simple, you just need to email the embassy that for your *** reason, you do not wish to enter into US. They simply “close your file”.

“if we accept one uni’s offer, apply for f-1 visa on basis of I-20, but later we receive offer from uni which wait listed as at first and we decide to go for that uni. What steps should we take to get the visa thingy corrected?”

According to them, you need to re-apply the whole thing. As a SEVIS record has been made on your initial I-20 form. You’ll need to “close your current” file and then get an I-20 form resubmitted. (You can that cleared in detail by contacting your University)

About Wait listing!!

Its a GAMBLE. According to immigration people, you need an almost 120-day period for the visa process (you can get it earlier of course, but its preferable this way), so wait listing can get your current offers turned down just because you wanted to wait on your “better” colleges.

120 days?? Okay, that means we should apply by May 1?? =s or actually even before that…since mine starts around 26th aug…

120??? No way!!

^ Yeaaahhhh…=o

Guys guys, they recommend us to apply 120 days n advance. Its not a necessity. I’d recommend everyone who is completely/very much unfamiliar with US F-1 visa process to contact USEFP and see if they organize any seminars in your city. I got to know a great deal about the whole process. Best of luckk!

lols.
Thanks for that talha. Really helpful.

You’re welcome, guys. :)

We should open a consultancy firm, and make money to cover our tuition at US. (Now I’m starting to think along the lines of a Pakistani… :D)

Really? How? Harvard is least concerned about the financial crisis, so the financial aid excuse doesn’t work here. :D

Didn’t Harvard loose like 2 millions…? Maybe I’m making this up.

btw I was too consumed with that 120 days thing tI even forgot to say thanks. Thanks:D!

@talha_adnan:THanks man  Really appreciate it

@free, @Iúileb: Harvard lost 8 billion in endowment ([Harvard loses $8bn - NYT](http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/04/business/04harvard.html)), so the financial cirsis is bound to affect them in some way. free should still count her blessings, bcoz not many Pakistanis get admitted to use Colgate to brush their teeth for 4yrs!! Maybe other peoples’ acceptances are hurting someone here…:p:p
