Toyota Community Scholars - 2008-2009

Hey guys- Someone from my school (staff) called yesterday and this is the low down:

  1. They cut the trip; there will be no reception for the winners.
  2. Notification is being sent to both non-winners and winners, through USPS in a standard white envelope; no big package or anything, just a small white envelope.
  3. Notification is being mailed out in the next two weeks.
This is what they said and I can only trust that the lady knew what she was talking about. Good Luck to everyone and lets keep each other posted!

thats kinda sad about the no trip, but i think we all knew it was coming to that. hey, at least they are notifying us nonwinners!

I’d rather them cut the trip then cut the number of scholarship recipients.

good luck everyone!!!

I have spoken with ETS on no less than four occasions over the last month. The last two time I have been told that ETS no longer has any information because all of the winners and non-winners list has been sent to Toyota. According to ETS, they are not the one’s responsible for notification of the winners. This is up to Toyota. I asked and was given a contact at Toyota. When I called the person, I was asked “who gave you my number”? They were obviously not happy to be put on the spot and were unresponsive to any questions I had.

ETS has consistently moved out the notification date. The first time I was given a time-frame for notification they told me they were running about 1 week late this year. This would have put the notification date at around 4/21 or 4/22. The next time I called the said it would be the end of next week 5/22. From the various posts, all I can surmise is that they are guessing what Toyota is going to do.

Based on the state of the economy, the fact the winners trip has been canceled, and the odd way in which the contacts I’ve made have behaved, I would not be surprised at all if Toyota didn’t simply mail 1100 non-winner regret letters and continue to post the winners of the 2007 or 2008 scholarship on their web site. They may rationalize this is enough community promotion.

that would be just plain cruel.

that would be really terrible; I mean we put so much time and effort into applying. I doubt they’d do that.

I will be pretty angry if it comes to that, and I believe that there is a good chance it might happen. That really sucks about the trip. However, I was under the impression that how they viewed you at the trip was how they decided who got the larger scholarship, not just the $10,000 one.

I hate to think any well known organization or company would do such thing… What would they have to gain from that? I assume there must be some protection law on that, is there? After said, I am not surprise if that’s the case!

maybe this week we will find out. but then again, i have been saying that for the past like 3 weeks. so yeah… I hope Toyota wouldn’t do anything like that. Someone would find out and run it on the news. talk about bad publicity. Perhaps we are jumping to conclusions. sembrian could have just gotten a really angry rep.

The notification just arrived via next day ups. It is in a large envelope. I didn’t open as it is addressed to my daughter. Best of luck to all.

i just got the response in a ups express mail package today…congrats to everyone who did!

anyone find out if they did not get it?

Also just received letter via ups next day mail. I’m assuming all 100 scholars were “regional” winners ($10,000)? Unless maybe they chose $20K winners based on application instead of interview (since there is no weekend this year)? Anyhow, for those who received the scholarship, can the money only be used for tuition, or can it also be used for “educational purposes” i.e. books, activities, etc… their rules and regulation sheet was rather brief.

Where is everyone from?
Are the losers also receiving notification today, or is it just the winners?
Thanks!

i am wondering the same thing…are losers being notified today too? i’m quite sure i didn’t get it, but i would just like some kind of confirmation of my losing at least haha

I got it…and I’m crying I’m so happy. I’m from New Jersey.
Congratulations, everyone!

I know that several people called in and were told that everyone would receive notification, regardless if they win or not. I had also been told the same thing.
Just called again and was told that non-winners will not be notified! :(

That’s really sad. If they don’t want to pay for stamps, can’t they at least send emails like Coca-Cola?

Since it was mailed via UPS Next Day Mail, is it safe to say that if I do not receive notification today, I am not a winner?

Regardless of the outcome for me, (havn’t been home to see if I got a package yet,) I think that SRP and Toyota have done a very poor job in administering this scholarship. To have a small delay is one thing, but to completely deviate from the published protocols in so many ways is embarrassingly unprofessional and, in my opinion, reflects badly on Toyota as a whole. (Based on the argument: if they can’t manage a nationwide scholarship then ???)
