Tuition Exchange for Fall 2024 (Class of 2028)

It is a good offer. It is just a shame that the school is so expensive. It brings the COA down to almost the equivalent COA of state schools like Penn State and Pitt (for OOS applicants). This appears to be a common strategy - the more expensive schools offer merit that brings the cost of tuition down to a similar level as the state schools.

I am still just feeling the sticker shock on all these schools. That is what happens when your kids are so spread out in age. If my hair wasn’t turning grey before it really is now!

Multiples back to-back is not easy either. Its all far too expensive, and the admissions process is horrible (IMO). All this $ I could have spent on a house in the Bahamas

I am sure. My hair would be completely white!

I sure hope we all get great TE acceptances though! Maybe that will help to forget the crazy admission stuff.

Also, I really don’t know how much crazier this can get. My little niece is 3 and her dad is almost 50 years old. I better tell him to get saving now or he will be working until he is 120

I used to work at Drexel. It’s a really neat school. Their co-op program is fantastic and is a huge bonus for future employment. It can be tough with the quarter system. Still, great place, but YES, incredibly expensive.

That is what she loved was the co-ops and even the quarter system. I think it would be too hard to keep up but she thought it would help to keep her on track.

But yes, very expensive!

Well just chatted with my D24. I thought she would be very bummed on the Drexel thing as I pretty much said we can’t afford it. Luckily she was very upbeat and seems fine. We will keep trying to play the TE game and see if we have any better luck.

I know the status seems like it might be electronic now but half the TE awards my kids received this year were emailed only to their email address or embedded in the offer letter that she skimmed through so quickly. Still not updated on the website.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up in case your kid has given you permission to glance through that email with them that’s filled with so much spam it’s hard for them to sort through

Wow - so the portal isn’t updated? Do you mind sharing which schools?

I don’t think the portal is updated regularly at all. I had asked our home school to remove one that we weren’t going to apply to and it is is still there a month later. Both schools that gave us TE info (one accepted, one denied) are not on the portal either. I wouldn’t count on the portal at all.

S23 and D25 mom here. S23 is at Cuse with TE. They initially gave him half tuition scholarship then awarded TE. They then dropped his merit to 20k Leadership award. This equaled full tuition. Room and board is still super pricey but it was doable to make Cuse an option.

D25 is looking at totally different TE schools so its like I will be starting all over from scratch as while my son is a music major, she insists on a dance minor. So far her TE potential interest list is St. Louis U
Creighton U
Le Moyne
Dean
Butler
Florida Southern
Ohio Northern
Oklahoma City U
Mercyhurst
Shenandoah
Lindenwood
Adelphi
Hobart & William Smith

Good luck everyone! I look forward to using you all as important info!

I remember reading your story on Syracuse. So awesome to get full tuition. Now that he has been there awhile what are his thoughts, pros/cons? I love Syracuse. That would be my first choice if I were going to college.

I don’t know much about your list for your daughter. I guess the good news for you is you know how TE works. I came in here pretty blind

It was hard for him to turn down Indiana (Jacobs School of Music) but they offered essentially no money so he knew it wasn’t realistic.
He really respected Baldwin Wallace’s programs where he got TE (waitlisted TE then awarded full) and he loved Jacksonville U weather and location to the beach (they gave him full tuition for academic and talent merit before hearing about TE). But once he stepped foot onto campus at Syracuse for an admitted students day just before decision day, he felt at home.

He is loving Syracuse a bit too much I think. A little bump in the road with changing up his major/minor a bit (still within music but allowing him more elective options) but zero complaints. He quickly found a solid friend group (or they found him really at the ice cream social).

We feel very blessed he was given this opportunity that would otherwise be way beyond our reach financially.

Thanks for the review! Sounds like it is where he is supposed to be

I know we (or people here) ask this question a million times every year but I am still anxious so forgive me. My son just got into a really expensive school that we would not afford without tuition exchange. My husband is an alum as well. Do I email the tuition exchange point person at the school and say in a nicer way “yay, excited we were admitted, son is really interested, do you need anything more from us for tuition exchange or are we all set?” I know it’s listed on my tuition exchange page. But I want to let the lady know we REALLY care. (maybe it doesn’t matter, maybe it does?) what do you all think?

My colleagues have done this - esp since many (my kid included) apply at a wide range of list schools but will obviously only ever take one enrollment. I plan to reach out to accepted schools to just see how they do it in general, since it’s so opaque. (Actually, Roger Williams sent information right away on what to expect with their process, which I appreciated, but my kid took it off her list after touring.) And I will make sure her top choice school is aware that they are the top choice.

Good idea. I hadn’t really thought of reaching out.

I have a slightly different question. We have a one on one with our AO in January to go over TE and financial aid. This is the only TE acceptance we have received so far but it doesn’t fully cover tuition (set rate school). Do I bring up we really are trying to reach full tuition otherwise we may not be able to afford? Or do we just wait until we have other offers in hand and then contact them?

We waited till all final financial offers were in before we really started reaching out to most acceptances.

We need email one TELO to say it was a top choice, he had even visited twice. TE denied (loyno).

Ok, well maybe I will just see what info they give in the meeting and wait until we hear from other schools.

Sounds like it is going to be even more stressful as FAFSA is so late this year.

I would never do this. But I would have my kid do it.

Your son wants to go to this school. It’s his education. He is the one who needs to send this email.

There is nothing wrong with him sending an email that says, “I received my acceptance. I am very excited about the possibility of attending as this is my first pick, I have applied for tuition exchange, If you need any additional information please let me know,.” Some may respond, but don’t be surprised if they don’t. It’s nothing personal; it’s just that they are busy.
