My kid is doing all of the application, but CIC it is a benefit to the parents. It is my colleague’s experience to manage that specific part of the process. My kid couldn’t have filled out the initial form and all of that because it’s an HR process.
In my opinion, once the initial TE form is filled out by the parent, the kid can be involved with the rest of it.
There are some scenarios where more complicated financial bits may need to be managed between a parent and a FA officer. The only time I ever directly communicated with the schools was either with visit scheduling issues or financial nuts & bolts (after he accepted his offer).
But at this stage, I think it’s best that all communications with the colleges happen via the kid. In practice, that can look like you sitting with your kid as she drafts an email with your advice on what is appropriate – the email will be sent from her account. One bonus is that it gives her guidance on how to handle such tasks independently later.
I agree with all your points, (I never even saw my kid’s essays or applications, 100% done independently) but in my experience, at my school, the parent handles a big part of this benefit.
Even for tuition exchange? I thought since it was through my benefits office and their human resource office I should be the one to reach out. I agree with scholarships/ financial aid- but if something is missing per the application only I can add it via logging into my employers portal etc.
I will also add that my daughter specifically mentioned the CIC benefit when meeting with her AO from her first choice college, and said that basically if she got the waiver she would definitely attend. He had never heard of it (and has been there a couple years.)
Agreed. When S21 went through this, my husband and I reached out to TE liaisons on several occasions. Since this is a benefit through our HR department, I think it’s appropriate for parents to get involved.
If your application has been processed through your (export) school and received by the other school (import), then yes, I would not email (but I would encourage my child to); you can check if the application has been received on the Tuition Exchange website. The exchange is considered a scholarship - your school confirms eligibility to apply, and then the student applies for it. They should follow up.
They will let you know if there is a problem with the application. If they don’t contact you, then they have all the information they need to decide. The only thing a follow-up email does is show demonstrated interest.
One exception to this is that some schools make TE decisions based (at least in part) on financial need, in which case they will remind you to submit your FAFSA - both students and parents will receive an email. Beyond that, there is nothing else you can do.
I think you are probably right. I am just getting so anxious- I am sure all parents are, lots of deep breaths.
Fingers crossed

I reached out to two of my daughters choices to confirm they had received the applications and ask if anything else was needed.
Everything else is through her, but the TE process was all through my work so I assumed that was correct. They even mentioned me checking with my work about a certain question I had so I don’t think it’s bad parents reach out in regards to TE.
For what it’s worth the admission counselor called me and told me the news she was granted it at king’s in PA a few weeks ago, which is one I had emailed so it couldn’t have been taken as a negative I guess?
Twin A accepted to CWRU with TE this evening!
For future use, we did visit campus and apparently all student emails were opened.
S24 got into Case with TE!!!
Twin B was admitted to Sarah Lawrence with a combined merit offer of $42K/year, which seems to be equivalent to the TE set rate. Not sure if it would be stackable or replaced by TE but thrilled either way!
Drexel will negotiate on merit aid. I would reach out to your financial aid or admissions counselor. Ask for more.
Thanks for the suggestion. We just may do that.
Ac: Sorry, haven’t been checking! Yes, definitely. Looks like someone went in and took a lot of the original columns out. I can post the original again, if anyone would like.
D23 received TE from Sarah Lawrence. It replaced the institutional aid, no stacking unfortunately.
For sure! How is your D23 doing this year?
It would be great if you could post the original. I was looking for info yesterday on Tulane, and didn’t see them even listed. I have to imagine some students applied for TE. Thanks!
