Our son got admission plus only $10K in merit scholarship. We won’t be able to afford $82K+ per year. So unfortunately we’ll need to wait until decisions about other scholarships are announced. Does anyone know approximately how many Dean’s Honors Scholarships and how many Paul Tulane awards are offered every year and when are those announced? On Tulane’s website there is also mention of Partial Tuition Scholarship. Is this the $10K offer he received or this is something different?

I want to evaluate his chance of getting one of those. He is US citizen, studied in an American International School because of my overseas appointment (it is actually a pretty high profile institution). SAT 1530, GPA 3.97, 8APs (Calculus BC, Physics 1 and C, Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science), College level class in school on Performing Arts, Captain of FRC robotics team, Viola and Electronic Keyboard diplomas from ABRSM and London College of music respectively, Fine Arts diploma from Singapore, extracurricular include service to the senior citizens in elderly housing and local kids with STEM.

Just quick point of clarification - unless the student is local/commute to the school or for some students that study abroad the Fall semester of their Junior year, the expectation is that ALL incoming students reside on campus the first 3 years.

Correct!!

I am not sure where the $82k number is published because I currently have a junior and the COA this year is $10k higher than that. I posted my actual cost breakdown above. This came off my student’s personal financial portal in July.

The Dean’s scholarship is awarded to a good amount of students, maybe 75-100, I can’t recall. Paul Tulane is just a few. Tulane is generous but I am not aware of additional scholarships that are offered to incoming freshman. Some are awarded to students after freshman year based on academic performance. Assuming he applied for Dean’s & Paul Tulane since applications closed Dec. 5th.

It’s an incredible school, they truly care about the students.

@tmack Thanks for your reply. Yes, I saw your cost breakdown that it is $92K+, so I subtracted $10K award that has been included with the admission offer. My son told me that he has applied for both Dean’s and Paul Tulane scholarships in November. So, keeping fingers crossed.

Online events/information sessions, when the applicant gets an email - click through some of it, engagement with the admissions person for your state/district, strong school specific essays.

Add to this answer that the suspicion is that generally the RD spots will go to applicants that fill “institutional priorities”. If they need a bass trombone player for the band - a couple of those kids may get an acceptance. If they’re short a few students that are going to play volleyball? Ditto. Of course there’s no way of the applicants knowing where the school might be falling short in any given admissions cycle.

I don’t think that would be financially feasible for me. My SAI was -1500 and I really can’t commit anywhere right now without knowing if I would be able to afford Tulane with the massive COA (especially since I could go to an in-state school like Purdue for free). I also haven’t been on a visit because I live all the way in Indiana, and it would be hard to apply for a binding decision without doing that first. I’m not sure how good need-based aid is but since my stats are nothing incredible I can’t imagine I would get any merit aid if accepted RD.

Does anyone EA actually get rejected, or does everyone who applies EA get deferred if not accepted? Is there anything that needs to be done if they want to be considered for RA, or is it automatic if deferred? I see mention of some getting a letter regarding confirming interest, but doesn’t seem like that went out to everyone.

It was not a letter. There is a section in the portal which asks if you are still interested.

I know two kids that got a declined letter. So not everybody is being deferred.

Tulane is need blind, from my understanding.
I would suggest running the NPC or net price calculator. Self input will provide a high level potential amount you would be responsible to pay, after need aid (NOT merit). Did you complete the CSS? Tulane requires that to determine need beyond what FAFSA determines? Based on the negative SAI, I would assume you would not be expected to
pay anywhere near full price.
If you are truly wishing to attend Tulane, write the admissions counselor assigned to Indiana.
Purdue is a great school and if you can attend for very little out of pocket, including room and board, think about that. No reason to go into debt for undergrad, if you may possibly go on to graduate school. Tulane is generous, no doubt.

Good luck to you kiddo. You’ve got this!

Putting it out there…curious on outcomes for legacy applicants (parents attended) for the EA cycle? Deferral here, student more than qualified per CDS.

I sent you a pm

My daughter is a legacy and was accepted EA.

31 ACT
3.9 uw
2 sport athlete / club founder / STEM club VP

My daughter was accepted EA, with Honors scholars and $15k per year Merit scholarship. She is thrilled, but she has a FULL tuition scholarship offer at another equally ranked school, so I’m not sure how realistic Tulane will be in the end.

Stats: uw4.0
public high school in Southern California
11AP’s with 4’s and 5’s, plus 2 DE classes
Highest level math: AP Calc AB
Highest level language: AP Spanish 6 Lit
5 yrs of AP/DE social studies classes
4yrs of science
She did not take the SAT or ACT
High impact EC’s that align with her major and made her community a better place.
Part time job
Dance team
She did do an in person tour and a couple local events.

My son got in EA and I am a legacy. 1440 SAT, 4.0+ GPA with decent rigor (8 AP, 2 DE). We did not really do much demonstrated interest but he had a really nice Tulane specific essay- We are from NY

Thank you so much for the cost breakdown! My son got accepted EA to Tulane, but with only $15k merit aid annually. We don’t qualify for financial aid. He also applied for the Musicianship Award and sent in a Music supplement. Have you heard anything about that award? His letter said the merit scholarship doesn’t disqualify him from that.

If he’s applied for the musicianship award I assume he’s intending to be a music major. Also be aware that there is a scholarship available to participate in marching band (I think it’s like $4K/year). Not that $4K suddenly makes things more affordable but it’s something.

She visited, attended events when they came to NJ, attended virtual events and ensured she participated. She emailed the counselor several times asking relevant questions. The counselor recognized her name when he came to one of the local events. She sent thank you letters for all of the above. Expressed that Tulane was first choice (which it is)

What did you decide to do with the optional continued interest form? Still unsure whether we should respond.
