Several formal merit scholarships will be awarded at the end of Feb. For the merit-money everyone received now, they are not listed on the Tulane website. Make sure file FAFSA/CSS…and Tulane aid is negotiable if you truly feel challenges.
Are the formal merit scholarships dependent on CSS FAFSA? We don’t qualify for need based aid
The cost was what prevented us from ED as well and no merit. He does love the school and is so excited, would love the price tag to come down a bit.
From what I read on their website your child may qualify for a scholarship with higher than 3.7 gpa
Accepted this am.
3.65 UW, 32 ACT
Captain of HS Soccer team, 400 hours of volunteer work
2 internships at investment firms
Pre-College Program at a top European School
Founder of Start-up in Jr year with successful philanthropical outcomes
Congratulations to all accepted! DS deferred, 3.8 UW SAT 1450 varsity captain, 7AP’s, boarding school. Actually an expected outcome. Anyone know how many deferred are accepted in RD? Presumably single digits?
Congrats to all that got accepted. For those high-stat kids that got deferred, realize that Tulane is extremely yield sensitive. Their guess is that a really high-stat kid applying EA is unlikely to attend Tulane (they’ll get in someplace else they view is more prestigious). You’ll get the “consider switching to ED2” email and if Tulane truly is your #1 that’s your likely best path to admission.
Not necessarily - if the applicant wouldn’t qualify for need based aid based on FAFSA/CSS (really CSS), then they are not going to give anything over the $10K.
Possible, yes. Write a letter to the AO and expect to have to provide the admissions offer from the alternative school (and that school will be expected to be of similar standing to Tulane) and they will look at what the NET price is expected to be to the applicant and consider meeting it. Also preface the letter from the standpoint of “all we need is specifically $X and you have your next Tulanian”.
Can you provide example of this? Past (personal) experience and reading through other threads suggest this is not true. They have a formula they use from the CSS that will ultimately come very close to the FAFSA SAI and that’s the number the applicant is going to get. They might sweeten merit aid but merit and need based aid do not stack.
Historically - this is accurate.
My son was accepted today! His stats for reference: 4.0/UW (school does not weight); 1480 SAT, all honors and AP’s, captain of soccer team, all Ohio soccer, good leadership and strong EC’s, lots of other regional and national awards. He received merit aid of 10K/year. 4 or 5 other kids from his high school applied and all were deferred.
I roughly think about 350~400K income only got 1k~zero financial aid (ran the net calculator of Rice University) If your family income below 350K, you will get some aid for sure unless you have loads of cash or multiple real estates, etc.
I got deferred EA today.
GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.1 W (9 APs)
SAT: 1350 (test optional lol)
Major: Neuroscience
ECs: 4-H club president, research assistant at local university, 3x gold medalist in viola at state music competition, section leader in school and pit orchestras, shift leader at a fast food chain, literary magazine officer, summer program at Butler University. Honestly nothing special.
Region: Midwest
I attended 1 zoom information session and follow their instagram accounts. Does anyone have any advice on getting accepted RD? Thanks and best of luck to everyone!
That’s a whole lot of special. Don’t minimize your achievements.
Can you switch to ED2?
I have a junior currently at TU but my HS senior was deferred today. Happy to answer questions. At Tulane, everyone is admitted to all the schools, you do not have to pick a school. In fact, you can double major and your majors can be in two different schools. It’s very unique and a lot of kids end up thriving in areas They wouldn’t otherwise be able to experience. Also the COA ( cost of attendance) for the current year 24-25 is $92k, it is $9k higher than when we started fall ‘22. I would expect the COA for 25-26 to be closer to $95k. So $10k per year barely makes a dent.
In my experience merit is mentioned in decision letter by most accepted. There are additional scholarships but they needed to be applied for by Dec. 5th. Three years ago we asked multiple times for an increase in merit & they did add $2k per year but nothing else. As far as financial aid, I haven’t ever heard of anyone getting any if their income was over $150k. If anyone says they make $300k & got aid they likely don’t make that much.
As far as RD, last year things started to shift. They went several years of having a majority of their acceptances come through ED, EA & ED 2 leaving a VERY small amount for RD, it was really bad the year my other daughter was accepted. The “newer” admissions director addressed the situation because RD was impossible. I think the chances of getting in RD are much better than they were 2-3 yrs ago.
My youngest was deferred today, 3.8 UW, 4.2 weighted, test optional. 7 AP/IB’s Tons of EC, Varsity Captain 2 sports, for multiple years. Hundreds of hours of community service & award recipient for hours, plus has older sister at Tulane.
How do you get to the $92k? The Tulane website shows cost of attendance including all expenses (books, etc) at closer to $88k
Let me look at the paperwork I have & post a breakdown, it’s our financial sheet but starts with the COA before merit etc.
Obviously transportation is variable & it doesn’t include health insurance if you need to purchase. You can attempt to opt out of that but only if Tulane approves, just depends on your coverage. I am trying to be helpful because the sticker is big. Even buying meal plan for first 2-3 yrs is required if living on campus. That is a huge expense (included above) but it’s around $7600 a year. The price is the same for the first 2 years.
My daughter was accepted today! We were pleasantly surprised. Tulane was her #1! She was test optional and 3.86 GPA (weighted). Lots of ECs and a ton of demonstrated interest. No merit in the letter. Hoping we get some aid…
How did you show tons of demonstrated interest? Emailing counselor and registering for events?
Thank you. My parents sold a rental, and I think this means I won’t qualify for aid, but to your point, it’s possible I won’t qualify in subsequent years either because of their gains.
