So proud and congratulations to all the parents.
My daughter got accepted for Fall 2025. If it helps anyone… 4.12 GPA, 9APs & Honors, Varsity level crew rower, 80+ hours of volunteering at tutoring, teaching kids to row etc. Also volunteers at hospice to offer support to patients and their families. Stellar personal statement and “why Tulane” essay. Congratulations to everyone who got in!
DS accepted ED
no mention of merit aid in the letter… did anyone who was accepted receive merit aid in their acceptance letter?
My DS also accepted ED - also no mention of merit aid in letter - ROLL WAVE
Last year my son received his merit award in his acceptance letter
Sorry… forgot to add SAT 1400
Congrats to all the got in.
Historically Merit awards get included as part of the acceptance letter. You can validate with Admissions but more than likely if it doesn’t mention in the letter there isn’t a merit award. Part of the criticism of ED applications is that the school doesn’t feel the need to incentivize an acceptance with a merit award. Some applicants will get them, yes, but the suspicion is that - at least proportionately - much of the merit goes into the EA/RD applicants.
There are a few exceptions but also be aware that even if there is a merit award, if there is the expectation of need based aid the awards would not stack (the merit award would be taken into consideration as part of the aid package).
Any stats on your student you can share?
My daughter was accepted ED yesterday and a merit award was included in her letter.
Accepted for Fall with 3.8 UW and test optional. No merit. Thrilled!
The Tulane admissions instagram post discusses that merit aid favors EA applicants over ED applicants, but need based aid offers do not distinguish between the two rounds. It was actually a pretty informative post (posted on October 11th).
Right - and need based aid needs to be applied for every year and will change based on the financial position of the family.
Where many families get tripped up is the stacking (or lack there-of).
If the school has a list price of $90K and the applicant gets a $20K/year Merit award but submits their financial aid and the Family Contribution reflects $50K - that $20K is going to be part of the package that gets the family to the $50K so the award might reflect:
Gross price - $90K
Merit Award - $20K
Grant Award - $15K
Federal Loan - $5K
Net Price - $50K
If the exact same student didn’t get a merit award their package might look like:
Gross price - $90K
Grant Award - $35K
Federal Loan - $5K
Net Price - $50K
Merit awards really only benefit if the amount gets them below the Family Contribution expectation.
