Thanks Jack… Checking for Chances for Texas A&M and UT Austin

I am not very familiar with those schools, but I am sure there are others on CC who are. Have you tried the “Will I get in?” function on USNWR or Niche? You can also get an idea of who is getting accepted by looking at each school’s common data set.

For class rank, what does “Q2” mean? I believe TX state universities have a policy of admitting students who are in top 10% of their high school class, but they are not guaranteed admission into competitive majors like engineering or comp sci.

The more information you can provide, the better CC members can help you. What APs did you take? How did you score on your AP exams? How are your teacher references?

I am surprised with your stats you are in the second quartile of your class. Do you attend a private or highly ranked public HS? If so, is your guidance counselor providing useful advice?

Both are high reaches if you have second quartile class rank.

Texas A&M also admits to general engineering; there is a secondary admission process (ETAM) to get into mechanical engineering based on college grades. Mechanical engineering is one of the more competitive majors for those who do not reach the 3.75 college GPA for automatic admission in ETAM.

Numerous other Texas public universities offer mechanical engineering, and most of them should not be difficult to be admitted to.

with these numbers your ranking is below 25%? I teach in a Texas public high school with graduating class 700-800. Last year we had the first student ever to score 1500. He is at UT now.

TAMU requires a 3.75 freshman GPA for an engineering student to get their major of choice? At Purdue it is 3.25. Is there massive grade inflation at A&M? When I attended undergrad in the 1980s engineers did backflips across the quad if they earned a 3.0 and schools were trying to fail out the bottom 20% of freshman engineering classes.

Yes, 3.75 college GPA for automatic entry to engineering major of choice. Otherwise, one has to apply to at least three majors in a competitive admission process.

Unfortunately, my daughter took all the heavy courses that were offered in the School. Not every student in her school took it. Only 16 kids are in multivariable and she is one of them. She lost grades in 9th and 10th which is difficult to cover in 1 year

The good news with these stats is that UT Arlington, UT El Paso, UT San Antonio, TTU, Texas A&M other than College Station, PVAMU, Houston, and probably other Texas publics with ME should be assured admission (but check for admission to the ME major). UT Dallas would be uncertain, but probably a realistic try if interested.

If cost constraints allow for out-of-state or private schools, then some of those which have less or no consideration of class rank may be less difficult to get admitted to then UT Austin or Texas A&M College Station.

I think realistically A&M or UT are not likely given the rank.

That said, as noted, there are many other fine in state schools. There are also outstanding out of state schools that would come in at low cost with these stats - don’t know your budget - but many of the SEC schools, Arizona, New Mexico, and more.

I wouldn’t be “tensed” for two schools. I would figure out what you want in a school - budget, size, environment (urban, rural, sports, weather, etc.) and build a balanced list.

For MechE, the where you go likely doesn’t matter much.

Good luck

it was a public school. Guidance Counselor

thanks!! Yes considering good private engineering ones Such as Purdue and Virgnia Tech

Didn’t UT Austin just announce that they were now auto accepting only the top 5% (down from 6%)? I believe so.

These are both public universities but out of state for you. They are not private engineering schools.

That is for the fall of 2026:

As for the person who started this thread, with that class rank, I think this student needs to focus on schools other than UT Austin and other top tier undergrad engineering programs. There are still plenty of great options.
