Waitlisted from UCR
Rejected from UCI
UCB has said most likely that they will not use the alternate major this year, but rather are collecting data for future admission cycles. (source: an email they sent to counselors, I believe)
I did not see any waitlist admits last year for alternate majors, so that statement makes sense.
Does the waitlist have any sort of ranking based on how soon the student accepts being added to waitlist? My son pondered it for a few days before accepting, around Tuesday.
IB diploma candidate with 3.8 uw gpa and 4.2 w gpa.
Great ECs in my opinion, so many!!

I think he didn’t apply to enough safety schools
Welcome.
I saw that your son applied to Chemistry at SLO. The following CSUs are still accepting applications for chemistry majors.
- Channel Islands (due 3/30/24)
- San Francisco (due 3/30/24)
- Cal Poly Humboldt (due 3/31/24)
- East Bay (due 4/02/24)
- Sacramento (due 5/01/24)
- Sonoma (due 5/03/24)
- Stanislaus (due 5/17/24)
- Chico (due 5/31/24)
Just a quick plug for chemistry at Sonoma State. My friend was a chemistry major there and now is a very successful physician’s assistant and also teaches PAs at a university. She said she loved SSU’s small size and helpful faculty; she says she got personalized attention that she may not have received at other schools. The dorms are fantastic and the campus is beautiful and safe. Freshmen can bring their cars to campus, unlike many other schools, and parking is ample. The gorgeous Green Music Center at SSU was modeled after Tanglewood and hosts many famous musicians. Further, my kid with similar stats was offered a $2,000 President’s scholarship this year. SSU is a gem of a school.
Sorry can’t figure out how to delete my post so it’s directed to you, but note my comments on SSU above. Best wishes to your student!
No the waitlist is not ranked and there is no way to know if and when they pull from the waitlist. In general, a student should be expect to hear after the May 15 deadline. Last year however, some admits were notified starting April 18 which meant that UC Davis saw a large enough number of students declining their acceptance to start pulling from the waitlist.
In 2022, UCD had 1 wave of admits on May 5.
Hi, Thanks for letting me know. Can you tell me if your son applied to Computer Science, or to Computer Engineering?
I’ve heard that CS is a much bigger program, and that the chances of getting in are higher. My son later regretted that he applied to Computer Engineering instead of to Computer Science.
Good luck. Pretty solid stats but as you noted, CE may be a bit more difficult to get off the waitlist but with those stats…pulling for you. I did see the SJSU admit. Assuming it is CS, CE or SWE. That is a solid get and admission.
No one can predict the chances of anyone getting off the waitlist since the # of enrolled students by the SIR date will determine if there is room for additional students and which majors. UC Davis did take over 4000 students off the waitlist last year but for most of the UC’s, there was an increase in their waitlist admits and it appeared to be that the UC’s were cautious in their admit numbers for overall to avoid over enrolling. Most campuses are still working on refining their yield predictions since Covid.
Just for reference, in 2023 UC Davis had a total of 1149 Undergrad CS majors enrolled while there were 298 CE majors. Yes, more CS majors are enrolled but it does not mean that it will be easier to be admitted off the waitlist for either major especially since CS has moved from the College of L&S into the College of Engineering.
Bio here. How was last year’s waitlisted chances?
The first post in this thread includes the waitlist numbers for both 2022 and 2023. Along with some additional insights. Good luck. Here is hoping 2024 is more like 2023…
As noted, the numbers vary each year depending upon how many admitted students enroll by the SIR deadline, how many opt into the waitlist and how many spots are available. Last year, many students were admitted. This year it may be different.
Was there a place to submit a statement when submitting for the waitlist? My daughter submitted so quickly I don’t think she even bothered to look. I know other UCs offer optional statements, so I’m wondering if she missed an important detail in Davis’ waitlist.
UC Davis discontinued the waitlist statement last year so you did not miss anything.
UC Davis also accepts updated grades and a statement, FYI.
