UC Santa Barbara Class of 2029 Waitlist and Appeal Discussion

I heard that UCSB offered 22,000 waitlist spots - can anyone confirm this number? Also, how many people are currently waitlist for psych major (in state)?

historically its like 10-15k

Only UCSB admissions can confirm the waitlist number since published waitlist data is usually not available until the end of the year or early next year. What is more important is how many will opt into the waitlist and that number will not be known until past the opt in deadline.

Thank you - that makes sense. Well, fingers crossed that the numbers look favorable after the opt in deadline, and that my DD hears good news in May!

ucsb had a wl wave right before the sir deadline last year right? any idea if thats gonna happen this year as well?

This has to mean that they are going to admit a lot off the WL right

Otherwise whats the point of them notifying you about financial aid when you arent even in the school?

UCSB needs to have all financial aid packages ready if they start admitting off the waitlist since it is usually a 5-7 day enroll deadline so not much time to make a decision.

Only admissions will have that information since they historical enrollment data to help gauge how they are doing with their yield for this year.

Does getting the email in march mean that you will get off earlier? I was reading last years and people were getting it late april.

It does not mean you are being admitted only if admitted, your FA package is ready.

Does UCSB admit before may 1st off the waitlist?

If the enrollment targets are not meeting expectations, they could pull from the waitlist early. They admitted some students earlier than the SIR deadline last year and in 2023.

How much is some

When they select people, do they just go off based on GPA

Some is relative because admissions never posts the exact numbers for each waitlist admit wave.

Waitlist admits are based on your original UC application review not just GPA and where you fit in based on the open spots and institutional priorities.

Should we start expecting mid or late april?

As a waitlisted student, you should have no expectations of admit dates other it can happen anytime UCSB feels that they are not meeting their target enrollment numbers.

Question here…
My daughter was accepted to UCSB, but under her alternate major.
She was waitlisted for her first choice, Mech Engineering.
I understand that if she accepts admission she will automatically remain on the waitlist for any potential openings in her first choice until the end of her freshman year.

My question:
Since she has actually been admitted (and assuming she accepts admittance) does she have priority over someone on the waitlist that was NOT admitted if and when an opening becomes available in her desired major?

I know, it’s an obscure circumstance, but the information will help her decide on where to attend.

This is what UCSB states about change of major from the alternate admitted major. Please note that she cannot be admitted into her alternate major and still be on the admission waitlist. She is admitted into UCSB with her alternate major and then can submit a change of major for Mechanical Engineering once she enrolls.

College of Engineering
To request a change of major into a College of Engineering major, students must first submit a SIR. Students may request a change of major into a College of Letters and Science or College of Creative Studies prior to submitting their SIR.

Students who have submitted an SIR may submit a Major Change to Engineering Request Form to provide us with your preferred major should space become available.

A response to your request for an Engineering major change will not be considered until after the SIR deadline when we can assess space availability for the college. We understand that waiting for the decision about changing your major may be stressful, however we must first determine if space remains in the Engineering programs after students who are already admitted into Engineering submit their SIRs.

As a reminder, the SIR deadline to UCSB is due May 1 and if you were admitted, you would need to submit your UCSB SIR with the understanding that a major change into the College of Engineering may not be possible. If you SIR, you should do so with the intent to remain within the College of Letters & Science. Late SIRs will not be considered and your $250 deposit is non-refundable.
