does this mean that if i wasn’t admitted to my alternate, they will only consider my alternate?
During the waitlist process they will consider you for both your first choice and alternate major.
She is NOT required to submit a major change request at all.
This is from UCSB.
- If space does become available in my first choice major in the College of Engineering, will I be automatically considered?
Yes, for first-year freshmen only. If your first choice major was one in the College of Engineering and a space in that major becomes available, you will automatically be considered for that major. There is no need to submit a request to change your major back into that first choice major. You will be notified if a space does become available and you’re offered a spot.
Thank you. This is something new. I would then assume that she would get priority over the students that are on the admission waitlist. The issue is will she enroll if she does not hear by May 1 regarding the ME major and take the risk.
I had hoped it would give her some degree of priority over someone who was only waitlisted but not admitted or, over someone who stayed waitlisted but enrolled elsewhere
Thank you.
And yes, that is the issue. That’s why she is trying to lay out all the options, and the probabilities (or guesstimates) regarding those options.
She has an ME acceptance at SLO, a waitlist for Aeronautical Eng at UCSD, waitlist at Pomona College for applied math, and an acceptance for bioengineering BS/MS at UCR (kind of a dark horse at the moment). And a waitlist for applied math at Vassar.
Her favored location is SB, but really would like the ME major.
So a great deal of juggling at the moment.
Completely understand and I always advocate for the direct admit option if the student truly knows that they want to pursue the ME major.
Agreed.
Fortunately (or unfortunately), her affection for ME, substantial as it may be, is nearly equaled by math, physics, and chemistry.
That adds up to a degree of paralysis
Thus, the need for as much information as possible to help her.
Personal aside: I had hoped it would get easier after all the admissions/rejections had landed.
Not so much.
wait so only 1 was admitted
on the 19th?
Rare admits means 1-2 posts.
It’s unfortunate that engineers need to decide when they’re 18 while for some other professions you enter with a grad degree after college, but it is what it is. If you or your D know anyone who is a ME, preferably a few, she might want to talk with them about the career to see if it is a fit or if there are aspects that she can’t see herself enjoying at all.
As for the math, physics, and chemistry angle there are jobs where employers like that undergrad background. However to actually be a chemist, physicist, mathematician normally requires a PhD, while someone with an undergrad ME degree will be a working engineer after 4 years in college (although I encourage people to do the 5-year BS/MS program).
You can do this with engineering, too.
please please please please pleas eplease please please pleas e
Her waitlist for Pomona would include a 3/2 opportunity for a BS math (or physics) from Pomona and an MS eng from CalTech.
Or she could do a 2-1-1-1 with the same degrees from Pomona and Dartmouth.
But that assumes she comes off Pomona’s waitlist.
There’s a lot on her plate to weigh at the moment.
Did everyone get the financial aid email on march 26
I did
Since you only need a weighted 3.0, 3 Bs in normal classes and 3Cs in ap classes should be good right?
What does the conditions of admission state? For some UC schools state if you receive 2 or more C’s, then you need to submit an explanation.
- Complete all coursework indicated in your application. Notify the Office of Admissions at admissions@ucsb.edu if you change any academic coursework from what was reported in your application.
- Achieve an academic GPA of at least a 3.0 (weighted) with no grade lower than a “C” in each term of your senior year. Notify the Office of Admissions immediately if you earn a grade below a “C” in any academic course in your senior year.
- Graduate with a high school diploma by the end of the spring term.
- Submit all official high school and college transcripts by July 1, 2025. High school transcripts must display a specific date of graduation. No transcript may indicate dismissal, probation, or other restrictions. College courses posted on a high school transcript are not accepted. Any college courses taken must appear on an original college transcript. Transcripts are considered official when they are delivered directly from the school. Late or incomplete transcripts may result in the withdrawal of your offer of admission.
- Request that official Advanced Placement examination or International Baccalaureate examination results be sent directly from the testing agency to the Office of Admissions by July 15, 2025. Results for exams taken more than one year ago may take longer to receive. Please request official results at least one month prior to the deadline and specify all test dates in your request. Exams sent to other UC campuses are not shared with UC Santa Barbara.
- Maintain conduct consistent with UC Santa Barbara’s standards as a diverse, open, and caring community. If your conduct is inconsistent with positive contributions to the campus environment, such as engaging in violence or threats, or creating a risk to campus or community safety, your admission may be withdrawn.
Am i safe?
Yes, your grades meet the requirements but 3 C’s is not a good look for any waitlisted student hoping to be admitted. Luckily, UCSB has not asked for Senior grades to be submitted like some of the other campuses.
