UC Santa Cruz Class of 2029 Official Thread

Do you think all early admits are eligible for scholarships?

I believe it is similar to UC Berkeley’s early admits. Some but not all are considered for the merit scholarships.

DD got accepted into CS. We do not know her GPA as she is studying IBDP curriculum in India.

One question:
Why do colleges like SDSU/UC release decision in waves? Is it because they have trouble updating all the applicant’s portals at once?

I am thinking that for them to know who the top applicants are, they must have gone through all the applications. So the decisions must have been finalized for all the applications. So it does not make sense to me – this practice of releasing in waves. Nevertheless, we are lucky to catch the first wave on the beach of SantaCruz:-)

For any worried applicants that didn’t receive an acceptance today, my S27 did not get an early acceptance to UCSC in 2023 but was admitted in March to UCSC and all the other UC’s he applied to, including Honors & Regents offers. Not hearing today does not mean rejection or have a bearing on any other UC decisions. Stay positive! Wishing you all the very best

Which child is/was the stronger candidate? lol

Different campuses will post decisions based on what they find works best for them. Most Cal states will post decisions in waves while the majority of the UC’s will post decisions all at once. Yes, the servers have crashed before since all applicants are trying to log in at the same time.

I do not work in admissions but parts of the application review is computerized so initial screening is done by a computer algorithm and I am sure then the top scored applicants will be the first to be evaluated by the AO’s and readers so that UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz can admit these students early.

Again “top” students is how each UC defines top students so not just based on stats.

Congratulations to your D.

The one NOT admitted early to UCSC was far stronger candidate

So Regents are not like UC Berkeley? I received R&C application info on day of early admission to Cal, but nothing in my UCSC Portal (I see admitted and got the email). Also, how many applicants got acceptance yesterday?

Currently Berkeley is the only UC that interviews candidates before awarding them a Regents scholarship. All other UCs make their award decision based on the UC application.

This thread from last year has a summary of Regents and honors programs at each UC. I did not check for changes this year. If anyone notices a change, let me know and I will update the original post. Comparing UC Honors Programs and Regents Scholarships

it is like making ‘first impressions’ in real life. The hope is by admitting early, the student explores the school more, likes the school and enrolls. probably somebody with a psychology/marketing background can explain better than me.

Ah so Santa Cruz is the last we’ll hear early on? Davis/SB/SD/LA/B all same day?

UC Berkeley and Santa Cruz in previous years have done early admits in February. This year UC Merced started accepting applicants in December so if everything remains the same then the rest of the UC’s: UCLA, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Irvine, Davis and Riverside will release their decisions in March. UC Riverside has been doing rolling admissions in March but last year was 1 wave of admits and waitlists with another wave of denials later in the month.
