Thank you for the information.
For 2023, Regents recipients heard around March 27 which was 10 days post decisions.
Decision: Accepted
Major: Physics
UC Unweighted: 4.00
UC Weighted: 4.82
ELC: Yes
Major ECs: running STEM charity competition, helping run tutoring organization, game dev, science bowl
Major awards: USAPhO bronze medal, 2x AIME, NMF
This year they received about the same number of freshman applications as last year, so assuming that they admitted roughly the same number of students, the acceptance rate should be around last year’s figure, 8.7%.
For what it’s worth, my wife is an application reader for a UC school (not UCLA). She said she paid way more attention to the fully weighted and unweighted GPA’s vs the UC capped GPA’s which didn’t seem to make a ton of sense to her.

Ohhhh wow this is excellent information, this puts to rest all the assumptions we’ve been making on the applying side of view. Do you know if your wife and other readers were given directions from the UC admissions dept to do so or is this more of a personal decision? Thanks for the info!
UCLA states the following on their website about GPA’s for Freshman selection.
Types of GPAs
All GPAs are calculated from courses completed in grades 10 and 11.
- The fully weighted GPA includes an extra grade point for all UC-approved honors courses (which include AP, IB, school-based honors and transferable college courses) in which a grade of C or higher is earned. The maximum value possible is 5.00.
- The unweighted GPA does not include any extra grade points for honors courses. The maximum value possible is 4.00.
Are those the directions that are given to her by the university? The training for readers is extensive. I’m surprised that, after completing that training, the capped UC GPA doesn’t make sense to her.
She said it was her personal decision vs University direction but felt that other readers were more similar to her based on her conversations.
My take: definitely don’t game the system and take fewer AP classes to improve your UC calculated GPA.
I might not have worded that correctly. She fully understands the UC capped GPA…she just didn’t feel it was as important as the other 2 GPA’s (weighted and unweighted). She said in her training they did not stress the UC capped GPA very much and seemed to recognize the other 2 GPA’s more.
Posters that want to discuss the different UC GPA’s, how they are calculated and how they are used in the application review can continue the discussion here: https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/the-uc-gpa-calculations-and-how-are-they-used-in-the-application-process/
This is a UCLA discussion so any comments should be specifically about UCLA. All UC’s will look at all 3 UC GPA’s but UCLA will emphasize the UC unweighted and UC uncapped weighted.

Does anyone know if housing is first come first serve, and if i need to apply for it now? If so how to know which to pick? Very unfamiliar with this whole process so any help would be appreciated
Housing is not first come first serve. In fact, UCLA guarantees 4 years of housing to all first year students who apply for housing by the deadline (May15th this year)
Lots of good info here
The housing site will let you rank lots of options, but realistically, almost all first years are placed in triple rooms with 2 roommates.
okay lovely thanks, so it’s guaranteed for all 4 years. Any type of thing where the earlier you submit the more likely you are to get your top choice? just cause i don’t want to submit the housing stuff until i’ve heard from all of my other unis too. Thanks
No. As long as you meet the deadline to register for housing, you are fine. It’s more or less a lottery in terms of how you get assigned. As a freshman, expect you might end up in a Classic Triple even if you don’t put it high on your list of preferences.
If anyone registered dorm?
There is another week. More schools to come.
Hello, I am admitted into UCLA computer engineering program and am wondering whether IB High Level Computer Science, Physics and Math AA (will be scored at 7) would fulfill the units required to graduate from UCLA computer engineering undergraduate? Or if you happen to know who I should reach out to get the answer, would appreciate your kind feedbacks. thanks a lot!
The list of IB and AP credit is here:
You’ll get some unit credit but it won’t give you much if anything towards the major requirements. Generally speaking APs are more useful as they can cover a wider range of non-major requirements, particularly the language requirement in L&S.
So looking at the table Twoin18 provided, specifically Math AA gets you out of 31A. No articulation for physics or computer classes, meaning you get generic credits and will still need Physics 1 series as well as whatever computer classes required.
