UCLA Class of 2028 Official Thread

Most UC engineering requirements don’t accept a ton of the AP/de for classes match.

If my D chooses UCLA she will have max transferable credits ( 105?). But very few will count towards actual classes. Had she chosen a csu she would have a ton that counted. I am hopeful that her DE classes meet most of the GE requirements though.

I thought your daughter did a bunch of DE classes. Have you looked on Assist.org? My son’s 15 DE classes, 10 of them will directly transfer and get UC course credits that will count towards engineering/GE. Only ones won’t count is algebra and trig as well as some business related course where UCLA does not have.

What does CC stand for please ? Thanks from a non native speaker !

CC means Community college.

She did 70 semester credits between AP and DE. She did complete the Igetc pattern for CC graduation so she will try to get the certification on her diploma. Because of this I assume her GE or at least most of them will be covered but engineering requires different physics than she has completed ( calculous based is required vs algebra based which she took). I think she will get one maybe two calculus courses credits from her AP tests assuming she scores high enough on the BC exam. But other than that the requirements for engineering are specific so she will have a ton of “ general credits” that don’t really apply to a specific course if that makes sense. However at the CSU it seems they accept more of her CC classes than UCLA does ( according to assist.org). Also UCLA has a foreign language requirement and each school has very specific DEI classes so no guarantee the CC diversity class will translate into meeting the UC requirements though it will give her credits. It’s all good though she wouldn’t have gotten in if it weren’t for her DE classes.

bummer. Every CC class my son took, I had sure it matched what Assist.org says will be equivalent. Oh well. At least her preparation will still be better than most.

Sorry to tell you that SAT 1520 is not particular high for CS major. 3 years ago, my D had 1550(M 770 R&W 780) with similar GPA stats as your Son. Her GPA should have been higher but that’s a different story. She was rejected by Berkeley & UCLA, accepted into UCI, UCSB, UCD, UCSC, & UCSD(undeclared). She/we decided for OOS UIUC, no scholarship. She is happy there now and had a great summer internship in NY last summer.

SAT score is moot since UC’s are test blind now and they do not consider the score in their admission decisions. A 1520 score is something to be proud of but I am sure that poster is aware it did not make a difference in their students admission decision.

What are DE classes?

Duel Enrollment. Community college courses that you receive both HS and college credit for. I believe you said that your daughter took some community college courses over the summer.

I was about to Duh my own question. Thank you for this. And yes. I didn’t know the nomenclature.

What’s reason your daughter picked UIUC? UIUC has similar ranking with UCSD, do you think its worth the extra $40K per year for OOS UIUC?

Thanks

Can you get any credits from A-Levels too? Or is it just IP and AP? Thanks

great thanks! does it mean I would get 1) 8 unit of credit (unassigned) from my computer science IB; 2) 8 unit of credit (intro) from my physics IB; 3) 31A waived as result of math AA; 4) 6 unit of credit from my IB diploma (unassigned). All these credits would contribute to the total 181 units of credit required to graduate from UCLA, i.e. leading to less units that I need to take at UCLA in order to graduate? thanks a lot!! If you happen to know who I should talk to at UCLA in order to get definitive answer, it would be great to learn.

yes and no.
Don’t worry about the 180 units, By the time you are a 4th year, you will have plenty of units. Keep in mind there are a lot of things there you will want to take and learn, you just may not realize that yet. Many people actually fear hitting the cap where you are forced to leave, rare but happens.

For all practical purposes, it looks like you will get out of one math class. But as for Engineering, you will need to take everything else: Physic 1 series; Math 31B onwards; You need an actual programming language which there is no AP equivalent AFAIK like C++ or JAVA. The units are “helpful” to get you to sophomore status sooner so your two passes to sign up for classes will be earlier. It is much easier to sign up for Freshman classes as sophomore or junior than as a true freshman, which many people complain.

The cap worries me for my daughter who has so many DE credits. Apparently AP credits do not count in the cap. I am unsure about DE.

Registrars Office at Murphy Hall. Since it’s early, if you are nearby LA, probably best call and see if you can go in person.

I think I read somewhere DE taken in HS are not counted against you.

  • Note: if all courses are completed at one or more 2-year (community) colleges, a student would never be in danger of having too many (excessive) units.

Apparently the maximum unit cap doesn’t apply if you can graduate on time. So for freshman that’s spring/summer your 4 th year. Also SP and IB credits don’t count towards the maximum amount.
