UCLA Class of 2028 Official Thread

I guess the keyword is graduating on time.

I guess my friends got distracted. It was very funny watching someone taking 20+ units a quarter getting 4.0 get placed on AP.

UCLA also has/had a generous FL testing out policy. If you already speak one with enough fluency, they don’t make you take any classes unless you want to. Also last I looked, Engineering Majors didn’t have to take FL at all. I will check again to make sure.

I would also like to understand why not in state UC (LA, SD or SB) and why did you choose OOS UIUC? Can you please share your thoughts? Thank you in advance for your help.

My D24 has 60 units if I count the AP credit accurately. Do units help towards class standing and registration priority?

The poster (@legojedi) reported that their D was rejected from UCB and UCLA, and admitted to UCSD as undeclared (that is, not CS).

Since UCLA was not in the decision mix, continued discussion is probably off topic for this (UCLA) thread, maybe take to PM?

Here’s the enrollment priority info page: Undergraduate Enrollment Passes | UCLA Registrar’s Office.

Advanced placement (AP) and international baccalaureate (IB) units are not included when determining appointment groups except when calculating degree units for those who have completed 160 units and declared candidacy to graduate in the next two terms.

UCLA (& Columbia) were her dream schools, but got rejected.
UCSD was undeclared. We loved the campus. To change to CS, one needs to take 3 classes with 3.3 GPA to qualify for a lotto selection. Even if one is qualified, I calculated the chance was only about 30% at the time.
UCSB has higher overall ranking but its CS department is just so so. Other than the beach, we are not impressed with its campus architecture.
UIUC’s CS program ranked top 6 nationwide, per US News & WR, consistently. Had my D accepted to UCLA or UCSD, she will probably pick them.

PatrickSmith, my D’s UCSD’s acceptance was for undeclared, not CS.

Make sense now. CS program in UIUC is top 5. Lots of big companies recruiting UIUC’s graduates, most of them found interships before graduated. But still $200K more for four years, and UIUC doesn’t have generous scholarships for OOS students.

Can i pm you? I have a question about ucla if you know well.

Sure.

I sent

Question regarding AP tests as a senior. Since UCLA does not count AP test scores towards GE requirements, my D is thinking of canceling one or two AP tests. Main reason is to save money but obviously it saves time and study efforts. I’ve read some of the older related posts, but things may have changed (e.g. after pandemic period).

Does anyone know if not taking one or more AP tests as mentioned in the admission application can cause the acceptance to be rescinded? The portal only mentions about keeping a 3.0 gpa average with no more than one C, and no Ds/Fs. Nothing on senior AP tests.

They will not ask you to verify the scores you reported. Since you haven’t taken the exams as a senior, the results of those exams (even if you got 1’s) won’t affect your offer. I think pile say you don’t have to take them if you don’t want to.

I think it depends on the major, but I believe In general AP US history, AP European history and AP Calc AB may help get out of a few classes. Not sure about AP physics one or two. Correct? Once you are an admitted student, the counselors will walk you through which count.

My nephew had ran into this issue in 2021, so he just sent a note to admissions to notify them. I would just error on caution and let them know since I think in the UC app, they ask you to list classes you are taking all senior semesters and exams you plan on taking. I’m sure it won’t impact admissions, but takes a few minutes and won’t hurt. My son did something similarly with his college, which doesn’t give credit or class placements, etc. and the admission official was fine with it.

FAFSA delays that everyone who applied is probably having issues with. I contacted UCLA Financial Aid office this weekend because I needed some mental reassurance. I asked two things: (1) D24 did not add UCLA on list of colleges when she applied because we didn’t know admissions results as of Feb 1. Is ok to still add and will it be considered late? (2) There’s this CA Aid link that has accompanied a few other UC financial aid emails that D24 has received so asked if we should apply to that while we wait for FAFSA (just didn’t want to get our hands slapped for not being proactive when a CA link is available and prob not messed up like FAFSA is). The office wrote back promptly. Said we can add end of March when they hope FAFSA will be fixed and as long as we submitted FAFSA before deadline, even if FAFSA processing is delayed, we will not be penalized. As to the 2nd question, the CA aid link it is really just for students w/o a social security number/Dream Act, so they said stick with FAFSA. Phew.

Silly me, I just found out that there is no refund if cancelling the AP test after March 1st. So I guess cancelling is not a good option anymore haha.

Our kid did this and it was fine, UCLA didnt care.
However in our case we still reported the change to admissions since the AP classes were marked as “planned” under the UC application. The thought of not registering and marking as such on the application did cross our mind, but given how competitive admissions already is, didnt want to risk it
