UCLA Class of 2028 Official Thread

So within L&S we dont have to go through a major change procedure becuase he has an admit for neuroscience?

Out of topic , i remember we signed a paper to open our transcript to University of California after 11 th grade. We got a letter if i agree with our school district will open our transcript and got letter from University of California about congratulations you are top of your class …
Did everyone remember this ? Just i am curious, though it isn’t important

I remember a letter from our school saying they estimated he would be top 9% and we had to authorize them to release his information. Then maybe after that I think we did get a letter from the UC system (not UCLA specifically). I don’t remember but sounds familiar.

Yes, this is part of the benchmarking process for Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) as described here: Local guarantee (ELC) | UC Admissions

How does UC calculate my school’s historic or benchmark GPA?

  • UC uses transcripts that your school has submitted for the top 15 percent of your high school’s junior class, after final junior year grades are entered.
  • Based on these transcripts, UC establishes a historic, or benchmark, GPA representing the expected GPA for the top 9 percent of the students from your school.
  • Schools are periodically asked to submit transcripts so that we can monitor and adjust benchmark GPAs.

They have to ask permission to submit transcripts.

Note that not all high schools participate in ELC, and I also think they might not do this benchmarking every year.

Does it mean that UC schools can access our transcript if students sign in?
My high school participates this program . I got this 2 years ago also.

I would assume that they do not receive personal information along with transcripts included in the benchmark process; I’m not sure exactly what would be included in the transcript. They are simply establishing a GPA benchmark for the school, so that they know how to classify students as Eligible in the Local Context (top 9%) based on their GPA.

Ok. But i think 9% ( this number) is really useful?

Being top 9% and ELC (or top 9% in state) is very useful for those students who end up needing to use the guarantee because they did not get in to any UC campus where they applied. My son knew a student in this situation, and he is happy at Merced where he landed. But this is very off topic for the UCLA thread.

You do still have to go through the request to change Major. In LS it’s easy. Stat and Data Science is in the Math Department and not Econ. You kid will just go to Math Department, politely ask the secretary to fill out a form and that’s usually it.

Which one is harder to Change major between Data theory or Econ? Thank you.

Thank you!

Both majors have Pre-major requirements which must be taken for a letter grade and required to maintain a specific GPA before declaring the full major. Neither major is hard to change into but meeting the Pre-major requirements are different and listed below:

Data Theory:

  • All pre-major courses must be passed with a “C” or better and a minimum pre-major GPA of 3.3. Math 115A is included as a pre-major course and must be passed with a “C” or better.

Economics:

Each course must be taken for a letter grade. A 2.0 (C) grade is required in each pre-major course. To enter the major, students must have a minimum 2.5 grade-point average in the economics and mathematics preparation courses and a GPA of at least 2.0 in any upper-division courses taken for the major before applying.

For students admitted to UCLA in fall 2023 and later, repetition of more than two pre-major economics courses or of any preparation course more than once, including equivalent courses taken elsewhere, results in automatic denial of admission to the major.

You should apply for the major the quarter after you complete the pre-major courses by filling out our change of major request form that can be found on our website: https://economics.ucla.edu/undergraduate/. Please submit the form to the Economics undergraduate counselors. Make sure that all of your grades have officially posted on your Degree Audit Report (DAR) when you apply for the major.

Thank you.

My son declared major Econ and Business. But people say that it isn’t good major in reddit. We didn’t decide yet which school he will go but i want to know more about two majors field.

My D24 is pre business economics. The major gpa required to formally declare as sophomore is higher, 3.3 in major courses, but I could be wrong.

@Jayku.
Reddit has many HS students posting which do not have a clue about UCLA. Take anything you read on there with skepticism. The few unhappy students are the ones that always post the most on that website.

@Mustang91

Business Econ requires a 3.3 GPA in the Pre-major classes so correct which is different than just Econ.

@Gumbymom I hear a lot about Berkeley’s regents scholarship but there is barely any info about UCLA’s regents scholarship, would you happen to have any insight on the UCLA regents scholarship?

Thanks!
