@VirginiaBelle - That’s a very recent development, just last year. One of my boys, two years ago, was deferred in January, waitlisted in March, and then accepted for the Class of 22. He opted to go to NC State, but that’s another story. I wonder why they stopped deferring.
@Essel They said it was due to accepting so few deferred students during RD.
Any thoughts one why they have extended the regular deadline? You think apps are down this year?
They must not have hit their goals. I know they extended EA for two days but I thought that was due to technical issues.
Can I say I am not a fan of extensions? So many students work hard to have their application in on time. It doesn’t benefit students that really wish to attend as they will already have their app in. It is only about getting their acceptance rate where they want it.
@MBNC1755 I agree!
I know every school wasn’t to brag about numbers of applications, and it keeps their acceptance stats low and prestigious. And I feel like it is an attempt to make easy money. My son did not apply, but he gets daily emails from UNC reminding him to apply. It irritates me because UNC would be a reach for him and I feel like they are setting him up. Sorry for the rant.
Bruh when can we expect decisons this is killing meeeeee
@Jakem01 Most likely January 31st with a possibility for January 30th or, if the AO powers that be are feeling generous, January 24th (fingers crossed).
I have heard instate will hear before OOS, but haven’t seen that commented here. Is that an accurate understanding? Or will everyone who applied EA hear at the same time?
@NCTransplant - They usually release them at the same time.
Fingers crossed for the 24th!!
I am an OOS applicant.

Sports Journalism Major
Does UNC admit by major? If so, how competitive is exercise science?
No, unlike NC State, UNC does not discriminate by major and one major is no different from another when it comes to difficulty of getting into UNC. It affects your admission in no way at all.
this may be a dumb question but where would we go to view our decision? is it the portal they gave us with the checklist or will we get an email directing us somewhere else? just curious on what to look out for
Oops sorry I thought I was responding for a different school please disregard lol and good luck all
The likely reason they were released so “early” last year is before the 25th was still the last Friday of the month.
Hi - my son is applying EA and out of state. Of course, I think he is a rock star and should be accepted everywhere, but what would members of this board predict is the minimum ACT and unweighted GPA needed for out of state? Does anyone know kids who got in from out of state and what his/her statistics were? It would be great to hear from you to set expectations.
My high school uses Naviance which shows historical data for student applications over three years. We are OOS but have a decent number of students that apply to UNC. Almost all were denied with some waitlisted. Of the small number that were accepted the lowest SAT/GPA of an acceptance was 1500 and 4.67. A few students with very similar data were waitlisted.
Out of state acceptance is around 13% and a portion of that 13% is often made up of hooked students- recruited athletes, URM, legacy, etc. Chapel Hill should be considered a reach for anyone OOS no matter the stats.

here you can view ALL the stats of last years admitted class including out of state and instate SAT/ACT
I noticed an interesting trend from our very competitive public HS in Maryland on the Naviance scattergram. It seems about 2 students have gotten in at each ACT score (starting around 29). Nearly all students had 4.0 GPA or above (but one or two had 3-3.5). So it seems that having a much higher ACT score may not be all that beneficial. It’s not the same for SAT, where more students 1500-1600 got in. I’m sure that’s wishful thinking and probably not enough data to make it significant, though (although there are at least 35 are on ACT chart and 75 on SAT chart over 3 years). But it is interesting nonetheless. I guess it is an indicator of the “holistic review”. Also, 2018 had a significantly higher acceptance rate from our HS than 2017 or 2019.
