UNC Class of 2024 EA Discussion Thread

Hello all, as decisions are getting closer, I continue to wonder about my chances and was wondering if some of you would be able to give me some input on how you think I will do as an OOS applicant.

1410 SAT (700 math 710 reading)
3.75 GPA (my school only goes up to a 4.0)
92.19 AVG.

Took as many honors courses as I possibly could, multiple AP classes, part of our community service club for three years with lots of volunteer hours and experience, a member of our Honor Society for three years and the president this year. Also did tons of extracurriculars including sports, theatre, clubs, and more. I have been on the honor roll every term. I have also struggled with medical difficulties, and chose to write my essay on my story. I tried to make my application stand out as much as possible talking about my medical struggles and living in another country for a year, volunteering at a wildlife research center, etc.

I would love to attend UNC and I’m super nervous about the decisions. I would appreciate any feedback!

Has anyone ever heard of an OOS applicant getting in with an sat around 1330? I have a great GPA (4.8) but I am scared about my SAT score.

@emt2002 Not from our high school, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. If you have a great hook or extra curricular that really stands out. They rarely take any students from our OOS high school, but when they do, they have 1500+.

Unfortunately, this is the same for our OOS high school. In the last 3 years, we’ve had 27 students with a 1450+ apply. While I know this is a very small sample, almost all were directly denied with 6 waitlisted and 2 admitted (1 - 1580/4.84 and 2 - 1510/4.71).

For OOS, Legacies are treated like all OOS
They eliminated the advantage years ago because it made the pool too white. The only advantage is that if it comes down to two OOS applicants who are equal, the Legacy would be picked I’m an alum and hope my kid gets in!
On a separate note, my niece found out 9 years ago that she got into UNC on Thursday 1/20. Hoping for decisions This Thursday!!

@yourmama99 - are you sure OOS legacies don’t have a hook? The Daily Tarheel had an article last year that disagrees with this. It stated that the average acceptance rate for OOS applicants overall was 13% for 2018 and the OOS legacy acceptance rate was 40%. You are correct that in-state applicants get no benefit from their legacy status but I believe OOS applicants still do. Obviously no guarantees of acceptance, but it certainly does help.

I think the extent to which legacy status impacts admissions is unclear - the media relations department quoted in the DTH article said it is not a factor for In State and one factor in OOS. Nevertheless, admission percentages are higher for legacy students both in and OOS - does legacy status matter then? Hard to say and I doubt a full answer will be given. Given other factors for in state, including proportional representation across the entire state, I would expect legacy status to be less of a factor than OOS.

Anyway tick tock hopefully only another 1.5 weeks to wait for a decision (unless lightning strikes and notices come early this Friday…)

I’m so hoping it will be this week! Based on a post on here outlining all the release dates for the last 10 years I think it was, it seems more likely that it will be next Friday (1/31) but I can hope right?
Good luck to all waiting!!!

If I recall correctly, I think about 2 days before, they send something out saying how the decisions will be released (ie, on portal xx date). So if we are going to hear Friday, I would expect that email tomorrow. If no email, we are probably waiting til next week.

They have historically sent out that email. I do not think that anyone will see it tomorrow. I really think decisions are coming on 1/31.

I applied EA and I am in state. My GPA is a 4.375 or a 3.83 and my ACT is a 31 (SS) and my SAT is a 1330 (SS) I am the captain of 2/3 sports I’m involved in and am in many clubs and hold positions in some. I am really nervous, what do you think my chances are?

I would like to know if anyone could chance me as well. Instate male, 33 ACT 4.5 GPW W, 3.98 UW. Captain for sports team and pretty involved in school/community.

@twokids2go can you link that article in the dth?

I am curious what the OOS yield is for UNC? I love UNC. My kids love UNC. However, accepted OOS student’s stats are very high. The students also seem to have incredible resumes. I would imagine those same students would be accepted at IVY’s and other private colleges that are need-blind and offer significant financial aid. My older child was accepted OOS, but when we compared OOS tuition with the financial assistance offered from other private schools, it was a difficult decision. The other colleges offer smaller class sizes, more direct interaction with professors, and considering UNC has OOS caps on accepted undergraduates they tend to be more diverse…and can be cheaper when comparing OOS tuition at UNC with the financial aid offered from colleges with larger endowments. For discussion-based majors…like political science, international studies, etc. I think a diverse student population would be important.

I just did a bing search for “Daily Tarheel Applicants Out of State” and it popped up. Easy to find. Lots of nice stats. Even breaks down some state-by-state

@ermjones - here is the link: https://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2019/02/legacies-in-admissions-0218

I just checked my portal and there was a chart listed with a 1-10 ranking system used for applicants’ grades. Nothing was marked to suggest which ranking applied to me (though I was able to guess based on the descriptions). Has anyone else seen this? Also, how could I share a picture? I’m new to CC!

Wow, that is interesting @mimioc213 !

Talked to one of my best friends who was admitted to UNC last year. Her “Not today or tomorrow” email came on Wed. Jan 23rd at 5:09 pm.

@mimioc213 -Is that on your personal portal page, where do you see your grades? I only see the checklist and Test Scores section?
