UNC Morehead Cain - Class of 2028

Application and interview due by Sunday

@chocolate2426 - I have a lot of the same questions too but my daughter spoke to an alumni of the scholarship who said there are 55 ARP referrals. However, I’m not clear if that means that M-C invites them all to apply or just a subset of them.

Good Luck!

Yes it likely (almost sure) she was accepted and is a semi-finalist. Congrats!!

I think when an oos student is asked at this point to apply, it does mean they are accepted and moved straight to semi-finalist stage. Students nominated by the schools are not automatically accepted, but those rare few who are fast-tracked are.

That was my point.

@ChocolateandWine Is your D also an ARP nominee? My D24 just finished MC application today and planning on doing interview tmrw…the MC application was a lot for one week, but I’m guessing the other 55 ARPs were in the same time crunch. Did your alumnae contact know how many regular semi-finalists (non-ARP nominee) there are this year?

Did you find any tips on what kind of questions they will ask for the video interview?

Yes, through ARP. We never got the original email for some reason so we were on a time crunch too!
Not sure she asked about the non ARP but when you google it says 2000 applicants and 20% of them become semi-finalists and 160 finalists for approx 75 spots.

D24 said recorded interview went ok, but it is going to be a long month waiting to see if she made it to the next round. I’ve been trying to find out what the morehead-Cain stats are for OOS considering the MC only takes 1-2 MC from each OOS. Any one find out more than the website approximate of ~400 with ~55 ARP?
We got the MC booklet in mail this week (assuming every semi-finalist did) and it is just making my D more excited about it even though chances are so low.

Thanks @ChocolateandWine. I did see the stats from the last couple of years, but wasn’t sure if there was anymore info specifically about all the semi-finalist groups - like how many are from NC, FL, VA, MD, PA, etc vs Intl. In 2026, there were 10 International MC scholars, but wonder how much of the 400 semi-finalist group was made up of international students?

I see in our USPS preview that my son is getting the postcard for the next “chapter” in the mail today - “Final Selection Weekend.” We’re still about 2 weeks away from the official finalist notification, but why would they send this postcard if he isn’t selected.

Thoughts? Other semifinalists - would you please share if you also get this postcard?

Pretty sure all semi-finalists received the postcard series. It’s just their way to tell stories about the program and process to get kids excited.

We received a postcard “Chapter Two Final Selection” 2 days ago and then received another postcard “Chapter Four Starting Carolina” yesterday.
Not sure if “Chapter Three……” postcard got lost in the mail! Seems like everyone gets the postcards to get you more excited about program.

How do you know the decisions will come out tomorrow? It says mid-January on the website.

My son told me that’s the message he got when he completed his finalist interview.

Yes tomorrow should be the day. I think 4 or 5pm seems like a reasonable guess
