University of Delaware Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

That is great. My daughter was accepted but she hasn’t heard anything about merit or honors yet. She has a 4.25 weighted GPA and a 32 ACT so we are remaining hopeful. We are OOS so the tuition is pretty high. Her major will be English and she is considering law school after college.

For merit - no email came. We found it in the portal under financial portal

I’m told it’s always said letters.

I can’t be sure - if it said letter(s) before, I did not notice!

My daughter received merit, but no word on honors yet. Are honors college decisions sent on a rolling basis?

I believe so. Next batch will probably be mid January. They seem to follow the same “Fridays at 5ish” schedule as the other acceptances do.

Congratulations! Delaware is such an excellent school for Marine Science. That whole area around Lewes is fantastic. We have been down there for Whale and Dolphin watching. You are sitting almost at the top of the Intracoastal, with the Atlantic right there. Look at the geography of how the mainland hooks in, right at Cape May, where you’ll find multiple microclimates and one of the world’s leading bird sanctuaries. You have the Jacques Cousteau Research Reserve like an hour north. Huge focus in that whole area for coastal conservation, excellent opportunities for internships. Certainly gives Miami a run for its money

Honors offer came last Friday evening via portal so they are starting to roll out

Typically how long does it take between the admission decision and the merit notification to be sent please? With the holidays, merit may just be next year now. D26 got her admit this past Friday.

I would guess merit would show up in your portal either 1/9 or 1/16. Be sure to check the portal because lots of people did not receive an email about a merit decision.

Congratulations! How long did it take between University acceptance and Honors acceptance? I thought all Honors decisions were made at the same time (Feb/Mar). Guess I was wrong! Do you know if Honors timelines vary by major? Thanks.

Admitted on 11/7, merit on 11/25, honors on 12/19…she is a biology major, I don’t have any info about other majors. Good luck!

Admitted 11/7, Merit 11/24, Honors 12/19. She’s undecided, so applied to University Studies. From what I saw last year, they released honors decisions monthly. So based on that, I would expect the next batch to come mid-January.

Is it true that Delaware charges students $2k to be in their honor program? I thought I saw someone post this online and wanted to confirm. This sounds nuts to me. I have to believe this is not true. I have never heard of a charge to be in honors. Usually it’s money off, not a charge.

I don’t know the amount (my daughter already graduated from their honors college, it used to be free) but they added a charge, I think last year. Another daughter attended clemson’s honors college, it was $1000 a year, but has since gone up. It was also $1000 a year for a LLC. It might be $2000 for UD, but there is definitely a charge now.

Yes, it is called a Differential Charge. I see that your student is also in the Business School which is another Differential Charge so both will be applied. Costs, Billing, and Financial Aid - University of Delaware

Most colleges upcharge for the honors programs. Then they give you more “merit money” which often offsets the fee. Seems strange but I assume it’s two different pots of money? Little sleight of hand with these schools.

UD literally just started charging for honors. My daughter and her honors friends got $17,000 a year in merit, but free honors. ETA, our in state flagship honors college gives merit, doesn’t charge, my other kids’ universities don’t charge for honors (NJ in state), but they’re not great programs.

Yeah, I think it’s new(ish) in a bunch of places. I know of a few places that charge for honors and then offset that with slightly more merit or whatever. They don’t make it obvious that’s what they’re doing though. People just have to decide what makes the most sense for them financially, academically and socially once they have all info in hand.

My daughter’s merit at UD came in at $2k more per year than the NPC said it would be based on stats. She was accepted into the honors college. Probably not a coincidence.
